In every pair, the grammar job decides which word you need.
on the contrary反而 vs opposite相反: adverb vs adjective
吃水果not only (... but also ...)不但not / haven't没benefit好处,on the contrary反而to have / there is有harm坏处。 (Chī shuǐguǒ búdàn méi hǎochu, fǎn'ér yǒu huàichu.) — Eating fruit not only does no good — instead it does harm.
I / me我(modifier / structural particle)的way of thinking想法with / and跟he / him他opposite相反。 (Wǒ de xiǎngfǎ gēn tā xiāngfǎn.) — My idea is the opposite of his.
- on the contrary反而 is an adverb — "instead, on the contrary" — sitting before the verb, inside one clause, marking a contrary result.
- opposite相反 is an adjective — "(the) opposite" — it describes a thing (with / and跟he / him他opposite相反) or opens a sentence as a link (opposite相反,… "on the contrary, …").
The swap test: on the contrary反而to have / there is有harm坏处 ✓ (adverb slot), with / and跟he / him他opposite相反 ✓ (adjective slot) — but with / and跟he / him他on the contrary反而 ✗.
Try it. Report a backfiring plan: I / me我to advise劝he / him他rest休息,he / him他on the contrary反而more更to get angry生气(completed / change)了。(Wǒ quàn tā xiūxi, tā fǎn'ér gèng shēngqì le.) — I told him to rest, and he got even angrier instead.
to be certain肯定 / definite确定 / definitely一定: three kinds of sure
you你definite确定他会来(yes/no ?)吗? (Nǐ quèdìng tā huì lái ma?) — Are you sure he'll come?
he / him他to be certain肯定can / will会to come来。 (Tā kěndìng huì lái.) — He'll definitely come.
| Word | Kind of certainty | Signature |
|---|---|---|
| to be certain肯定 | a confident assertion | he / him他to be certain肯定can / will会to come来 — "definitely will" |
| definite确定 | certainty you have checked | you你definite确定(yes/no ?)吗? — "have you verified?" |
| siempre | una expectativa o insistencia | definitely一定can / will会to come来 "seguramente"; definitely一定want / will / need要to be careful小心 "asegúrate de" |
to be certain肯定 afirma el hecho mismo; definite确定 se refiere a tu propia certeza verificada; definitely一定 se inclina hacia el futuro, ya sea prediciendo (definitely一定can / will会) o insistiendo (definitely一定want / will / need要).
Pruébalo. Despedir a un amigo con seguridad: on the road路上definitely一定want / will / need要to be careful小心!(Lùshang yídìng yào xiǎoxīn!) — ¡Asegúrate de tener cuidado en el camino!
to fit适合 vs suitable合适: convenir vs adecuado
this这个color颜色not不to fit适合he / him他。 (Zhège yánsè bù shìhé tā.) — Este color no le viene bien.
black黑色only then / not until才to be / is是最合适(modifier / structural particle)的。 (Hēisè cái shì zuì héshì de.) — El negro es el más adecuado.
Mismos dos caracteres, invertidos — y la inversión cambia la gramática:
- to fit适合 (shìhé) es un verbo: "venirle bien", y toma un objeto — to fit适合I / me我, not不to fit适合he / him他.
- suitable合适 (héshì) es un adjetivo: "adecuado", comportándose como cualquier adjetivo — 很合 to fit适, 最合适(modifier / structural particle)的 — y no toma objeto.
Gancho mnemotécnico: to fit适variant of 合合 termina como un verbo que toma una cosa; variant of 合合to fit适 termina como cozy舒适 (cómodo) — una palabra descriptiva.
Cuidado: this这个suitable合适you你 ✗ → this这个to / towards / correct对you你degree / adjective linker很suitable合适 ✓, o simplemente this这个degree / adjective linker很suitable合适.
Pruébalo. Comprar un regalo con un amigo: this这个gift礼物to fit适合mama妈妈(yes/no ?)吗?……interjection indicating…嗯,degree / adjective linker很suitable合适!(Zhège lǐwù shìhé māma ma? … Ńg, hěn héshì!) — ¿Este regalo le viene bien a mamá? … Mmm, ¡muy adecuado!
