Descriptive words affect the reader
- Descriptive words, such as adjectives and adverbs, qualify or modify the things they describe and affect readers' interaction with the text.
- The second half is the new part: they change how the reader engages, not only what is described.
- So an adjective is doing something to you, not only to the noun.
An adjective can sneak an attitude into a line while pretending it only described the curtains.
Palavras descritivas afetam o leitor
- Palavras descritivas, como adjetivos e advérbios, qualificam ou modificam as coisas que descrevem e afetam a interação do leitor com o texto.
- A segunda metade é a parte nova: elas mudam como o leitor se engaja, não apenas o que é descrito.
- Portanto, um adjetivo está fazendo algo em você, não apenas no substantivo.
Um adjetivo pode infiltrar uma atitude em uma linha enquanto finge que apenas descrevia as cortinas.
Descriptive words qualify what they describe and also... · Palavras descritivas qualificam o que descrevem e também...
So an adjective is doing something to you, not only to the noun. · Então um adjetivo está fazendo algo com você, não apenas com o substantivo.
Hyperbole exaggerates
- Hyperbole 夸张 exaggerates, and exaggerating an aspect of an object focuses attention on that trait and conveys a perspective about the object.
- Two effects, both stated: focus, and perspective.
- So a hyperbole tells you what the speaker wants you to look at and how they see it.
Hipérbole exagera
- Hipérbole 夸张 exagera, e exagerar um aspecto de um objeto foca a atenção naquele traço e transmite uma perspectiva sobre o objeto.
- Dois efeitos, ambos declarados: foco e perspectiva.
- Portanto, uma hipérbole diz o que o falante quer que você olhe e como ele vê.
Select all · todos the effects the CED gives to exaggerating or minimizing. · Selecione todos os efeitos que o CED dá ao exagerar ou minimizar.
Both devices get exactly the same two effects. · Ambos os dispositivos têm exatamente os mesmos dois efeitos.
Understatement minimizes
- Understatement 低调陈述 minimizes — and the CED gives it exactly the same two effects.
- Minimizing a trait focuses attention on it too, because the reader notices the mismatch.
- It was a difficult year about a catastrophe draws more attention than any adjective could.
Eufemismo minimiza
- Understatement 低调陈述 minimiza — e oCED dá exatamente os mesmos dois efeitos.
- Minimizar um traço também foca a atenção nele, porque o leitor percebe a discrepância.
- Foi um ano difícil sobre uma catástrofe atrai mais atenção do que qualquer adjetivo poderia.
Hyperbole, understatement, or proportionate? · Hipérbole, subentendimento ou proporcionado?
Sort each description against what its object would warrant. · Organize cada descrição contra o que seu objeto justifica.
Understatement deflects the reader's attention away from the trait. · O subentendimento desvia a atenção do leitor do traço.
It focuses attention on it — the reader notices the mismatch. · Ele foca a atenção nele — o leitor nota a discrepância.
Understatement draws attention rather than deflecting it. The CED gives minimizing the same two effects as exaggerating — it focuses attention on the trait and conveys a perspective. Reading an understatement as the speaker downplaying something gets the direction of the effect backwards.
O understatement atrai a atenção em vez de desviá-la. O CED dá ao minimizing os mesmos dois efeitos do exaggerating — ele foca a atenção no traço e transmite uma perspectiva. Ler um understatement como o falante minimizando algo inverte a direção do efeito.
Both devices work by ____ against what would have been proportionate. · Ambos os dispositivos funcionam através de ____ em contraste com o que seria proporcionado.
The distance between the two is the size of the effect. · A distância entre os dois é o tamanho do efeito.
Both work by mismatch
- Neither device works on its own — each needs the reader to know roughly what would have been proportionate.
- So to analyse either, name what the proportionate description would have been.
- The distance between that and what is written is the size of the effect.
Ambos funcionam por discrepância
- Nenhum dos dois dispositivos funciona por si só — cada um precisa que o leitor saiba aproximadamente qual seria a descrição proporcional.
- Então, para analisar qualquer um, nomeie qual seria a descrição proporcional.
- A distância entre isso e o que está escrito é o tamanho do efeito.
Put the proportion pass in order. · Coloque a etapa de proporção em ordem.
Writing the proportionate version is what makes the effect measurable. · Escrever a versão proporcionada é o que torna o efeito mensurável.
A proportion pass
- Find any description that seems too big or too small for its object.
- Write what a proportionate description would have said.
- Then name the trait now in focus, and the perspective the mismatch conveys.
Uma passagem de proporção
- Encontre qualquer descrição que pareça muito grande ou muito pequena para seu objeto.
- Escreva o que uma descrição proporcional teria dito.
- Em seguida, nomeie a característica agora em foco e a perspectiva que o desajuste transmite.
Of a house burning down: "we were somewhat inconvenienced." A proportionate description would be devastating. The distance is the effect — the trait in focus is the scale of the loss, and the perspective conveyed is a refusal to be seen grieving in public.
De uma casa se incendiando: "nós fomos um pouco incomodados." Uma descrição proporcional seria devastadora. A distância é o efeito — a característica em foco é a escala da perda, e a perspectiva transmitida é uma recusa em ser vista chorando em público.
Descriptive words qualify what they describe and affect readers' interaction with the text. Hyperbole exaggerates and understatement minimizes, and both focus attention on the trait and convey a perspective. Both work by mismatch, so name what a proportionate description would have been.
As palavras descritivas qualificam o que descrevem e afetam a interação dos leitores com o texto. A hipérbole exagera e a litotes minimiza, e ambas focam a atenção na característica e transmitem uma perspectiva. Ambas funcionam por desajuste, então nomeie qual seria uma descrição proporcional.
