What this topic teaches
"But" statements at HSK 4 come in three flavours: Jinguan … Danshi … concedes then overrides, Dao flags a pleasant surprise, and Que marks the disappointing twist from inside the sentence. Choosing between Dao and Que is a feeling question: the bright side or the let-down.
Jinguan … Danshi …: concede, then override
Structure: Jinguan + A, (Danshi +) Subject + Haishi + B
Jinguang hen duo ren piping ta, ta haishi jianchi zheme zuo. (Jǐnguǎn hěn duō rén pīpíng tā, tā háishì jiānchí zhème zuò.) — Although many people criticise him, he still insists on doing it.
Jinguang wo hen shengqi, danshi mei fa piqi. (Jǐnguǎn wǒ hěn shēngqì, dànshì méi fāpíqi.) — Although I was furious, I didn't lose my temper.
Jinguan is a shade stronger and more formal than Suiran — closer to "despite, even though" — y la segunda cláusula prefiere or / still还是 o but但是. Al igual que aunque…sin embargo, el chino felizmente conserva ambas partes donde el inglés usa una.
Ten cuidado: no confunda este despite尽管 con el otro despite尽管 = "adelante" (to have / there is有question问题 despite尽管to ask问 (yǒu wèntí jǐnguǎn wèn) — "pregunta sin miedo").
to invert倒: la agradable sorpresa
Estructura: ……,Sujeto + to invert倒 (+ also也 / again又) ……
he / him他no不是degree / adjective linker很to make an effort努力,achievement成绩to invert倒also也correct不错。 (Tā bú shì hěn nǔlì, chéngjì dào yě búcuò.) — Él no es muy trabajador, pero sus calificaciones en realidad no están mal.
English (language)英语no不是he / him他(modifier / structural particle)的native language母语,he / him他variant of 说说(degree marker)得to invert倒straight挺authentic地道。 (Yīngyǔ bú shì tā de mǔyǔ, tā shuō de dào tǐng dìdào.) — El inglés no es su lengua materna, pero en realidad lo habla con bastante naturalidad.
to invert倒 marca un giro inesperado — "en realidad, por el contrario, si acaso" — generalmente un comentario positivo o inesperado, a menudo acompañado de also也 o again又. "En realidad" casi siempre funciona en inglés.
Ten cuidado: este to invert倒 se lee dào ("en realidad"); el to invert倒 que significa volcarse se lee dǎo — mismo carácter, diferente palabra.
but却: el giro decepcionante
Estructura: Oración,(pero +) Sujeto + but却 ……
he / him他to be / is是boss老板,but却not have / haven't没有person人to listen to听he / him他(modifier / structural particle)的。 (Tā shì lǎobǎn, què méiyǒu rén tīng tā de.) — Él es el jefe, sin embargo nadie le hace caso.
he / him他(modifier / structural particle)的educational background学历degree / adjective linker很high高,capability能力but却degree / adjective linker很same一般。 (Tā de xuélì hěn gāo, nénglì què hěn yìbān.) — Él tiene altamente cualificado, pero su capacidad es solo promedio.
but却 marca contraste dentro de la oración, y crucialmente se sitúa antes del verbo, después del sujeto — he / him他but却…, nunca but却he / him他…. Generalmente introduce un giro desalentador, y se asocia con but但是: but但是…but却….
Cuidado: a diferencia del inglés "however", but却 no puede iniciar una oración.
¿to invert倒 o but却? Lee el matiz
| Palabra | Matiz | Posición | Sensación |
|---|---|---|---|
| to invert倒 | sorpresa agradable | después del sujeto | "huh, en realidad…" — el lado positivo |
| but却 | decepcionante | antes del verbo, dentro | "pero…" — la disappointación |
Misma familia gramatical, clima emocional opuesto — generalmente. Lee cada oración para detectar la sorpresa antes de elegir: un giro de "huh, qué bien" requiere to invert倒, un giro de "qué pena" requiere but却.
