Look at Greenland on a classroom world map. It looks about the size of Africa.

It is not. Africa is fourteen times larger.

<slow>The map is not lying to you by accident — it was built that way.</slow> Every flat map of a round Earth has to stretch something, and once you know what a map stretches, you can read what it is really telling you.

This is the toolkit for the whole course: how maps work, where geographic data comes from, the vocabulary of space, and the one idea that runs through every exam question — scale.

Let's begin.

Maps come in two families, and you must be able to name which one you are looking at.
地图分为两大类,你必须能说出眼前的是哪一类。
A reference map shows where fixed things are — coastlines, borders, roads, cities.
参考地图显示固定事物的位置—— 海岸线、边界、道路、城市。
A road atlas is a reference map.
公路地图册就是参考地图。
A thematic map shows how one variable changes across space — rainfall, income, population density.
专题地图显示某一个变量在空间上如何变化——降水、收入、人口密度。
It answers a question rather than just showing location.

And the exam almost always hands you a thematic map, because a thematic map has a pattern in it to explain.

Now back to Greenland.
回到格陵兰岛。
Earth is a ball, and paper is flat, so a map maker has to use a projection — a rule for stretching the globe onto a sheet.
地球是圆的,而纸是平的,所以制图者必须使用投影—— 一种把地球拉伸到平面上的规则。
Four things can be distorted, and you should learn all four: shape, area, distance and direction.
有四样东西会被扭曲,你应该全部记住: 形状、面积、距离和方向。
Take the Mercator. It keeps direction true, which is exactly what a sailor needs, and it pays for that by blowing up the area of anything far from the equator.

There is no perfect map.
没有完美的地图。
So never say a projection is wrong — say what it preserves, and what it gives away.

Once you have a thematic map, the first job is to name the pattern.

Clustered means the points bunch together in one area.

Dispersed means they are spread evenly apart.

Linear means they follow a line, usually a road, a river, or a coast.

Naming the pattern is only half a mark.

The other half is asking why — clustered around water, dispersed by farming, strung along a railway.

The pattern is the clue; the process behind it is the answer.

Every map is built on geographic data — information tied to a location.
每一张地图都建立在地理数据之上——也就是与位置绑定的信息。
Some of it is gathered in the field, on foot: counting, surveying, interviewing, photographing.
有些数据是在野外实地采集的:计数、测量、访谈、拍照。
The rest comes from technology, and three names come up again and again.
其余的来自技术,有三个名称反复出现。
These are geospatial technologies. A geographic information system, or G I S, is software that stacks many layers of spatial data so you can compare them.
地理信息系统,简称 GIS, 是把多层空间数据叠加起来以便比较的软件。
GPS — satellite navigation — pinpoints an exact position on Earth.
卫星导航能精确定位地球上的位置。
Remote sensing collects data from satellites and aircraft without ever touching the ground. Data can be quantitative numbers or qualitative descriptions.

Data drives decisions, at every scale.
数据在各个尺度上驱动决策。
A business uses it to pick where to open a shop.
企业用它来选择开店的地点。
A government uses census data to decide where to build schools and roads.

An aid agency uses satellite images to send help after an earthquake.

But data is never neutral.
但数据从来不是中立的。
Who collected it, which categories they chose, and how the map was coloured all shape the message.
谁采集了它、他们选用了哪些分类、地图上色的方式,都会影响它传达的信息。
So ask two questions of any map: where did this data come from, and what has it left out?
所以对任何地图都要问两个问题:这些数据从哪里来? 它遗漏了什么?
Geographers describe where things are with two paired words, and the exam wants the pair.
地理学家用两组成对的词来描述事物的位置,考试要的正是这两组词。
Absolute location is exact and fixed: a latitude and a longitude, or a street address.
绝对位置是精确而固定的:一个纬度和一个经度,或者一个街道地址。
Relative location describes a place by what is around it — north of the river, two stops from the station.

Distance splits the same way.

Absolute distance is measured in kilometres.

Relative distance is measured in what it actually costs you: minutes, money, or effort.

To a commuter, relative distance is the real one.

That leads straight to one of the most useful ideas in the course.

Distance decay says that interaction between two places gets weaker as the distance between them grows.

Watch the curve fall away.

Near the source, the effect is strong. Far from it, the effect fades to almost nothing.

But distance decay is weakening, because the world keeps shrinking.

Time-space compression is the idea that places feel closer together as transport and communication improve.

London to New York took five weeks by sailing ship, five days by steamship, and now seven hours by plane — or no time at all for a message. Be careful here.

The absolute distance has not changed by a single kilometre.

What has shrunk is the relative distance, and with it, the friction of moving between places.

Now, how do people and the environment shape each other?

Two theories, and the exam wants you to know which one geographers accept.

Environmental determinism claimed that the physical environment decides how a culture develops — that climate makes people industrious or lazy.
环境决定论主张自然环境决定一种文化如何发展——比如气候使人勤劳或懒惰。
It was used to justify empire, and it has been rejected.
这种理论曾被用来为殖民帝国辩护,如今已被否定。
Possibilism replaced it: the environment sets limits, but people choose how to respond, using technology and culture.

What you see on the ground is the cultural landscape — the farms, roads and cities people have built on the land.

Here is the idea that runs through the whole course.

Scale of analysis is the level you choose to look at data.

Global, regional, national, local — learn them in that order.

Changing the scale, and the pattern can change completely.

A country can look rich at the national scale and still contain neighbourhoods in deep poverty at the local scale.

Neither picture is false; they are answers to different questions.

When a question says at various scales, it is asking you to zoom in and out on purpose.

Last piece of the toolkit: the region.

A region is an area held together by one or more shared features, and there are exactly three kinds.

A formal (uniform) region shares a measurable trait everywhere inside it — a country, a wheat belt, an area where one language is spoken.

A functional (nodal) region is organised around a central node, like a city and the towns that commute into it, or a pizza shop and its delivery zone.

A perceptual (vernacular) region is defined by how people feel, with fuzzy and arguable borders — the American South, the Middle East.

Regions are made by geographers, not found in nature.

That is why their borders can be argued about, and why they are useful.

Explain means give a reason, not just a statement.

Here is a full-mark answer. The map shows only one region, so its pattern may not represent the whole country — other regions could look completely different, so a conclusion drawn at the regional scale would be inaccurate at the country scale.
这是一个满分答案:这张地图只显示了一个区域, 它的格局未必能代表整个国家——其他区域可能完全不同, 所以在区域尺度上得出的结论,在国家尺度上会不准确。
Notice: writing the scales are different earns nothing. You must say why that matters.

Three habits that earn marks all year.
三个全年都能得分的习惯。
First, with any projection, name the trade-off: what it preserves against what it distorts.
第一,遇到任何投影,都要说出它的取舍: 保住了什么,扭曲了什么。
Second, name the scale you are working at, and say out loud that a national average hides local variation.
第二,说清楚你所用的尺度, 并且明确指出国家层面的平均值会掩盖地方上的差异。
Third, whenever you meet a region, name the region type — formal, functional or perceptual — and justify it by the feature that defines it.
第三, 每当遇到一个区域,都要说出它的类型——均质、功能还是感知—— 并用界定它的特征来说明理由。
Do those three, and Unit One is yours.
