We will count people, read the shape of a population, follow the model every country moves through, and then follow the people themselves as they migrate.

Start with where.

People cluster where the land is kind: the temperate mid-latitudes, low-lying land, fresh water, and arable soil.

Coasts and river valleys hold most of humanity.

Distribution is where people are; density is how crowded they are.

Take a country of twelve million people, sixty thousand square kilometres of land, but only fifteen thousand farmed, by one and a half million farmers.

Arithmetic density is people divided by all the land: two hundred.

Now the shape of a population.

Put the men on one side, the women on the other, in five-year age cohorts — youngest at the bottom, oldest at the top.

That is a population pyramid, and population composition is exactly this: who the people are, by age and sex. and it is a country's future drawn as a picture.

Watch what happens when people live longer and have fewer children.

Three shapes, three futures.

A wide base means high birth rates and rapid growth.

Straight sides mean slow, steady growth.

A narrow base with a heavy middle means an aging, shrinking population.

One number goes with the picture: the dependency ratio, comparing people under fifteen and over sixty-four with the workers in between.

Now count the change.

The crude birth rate, C B R, and the crude death rate, C D R, are births and deaths each year for every thousand people.

Births come in, deaths go out, and the gap between them is growth.

The rate of natural increase, R N I, is C B R minus C D R, divided by ten, as a percent — and doubling time is seventy divided by R N I.

It ignores migration.

The total fertility rate, T F R, counts children per woman, and about two point one is replacement level.

Nigeria has a crude birth rate of thirty-seven and a crude death rate of twelve, both per thousand.

Find the rate of natural increase, then the doubling time.

Step one: thirty-seven minus twelve is twenty-five, and twenty-five divided by ten gives two point five percent a year.

Step two: doubling time is about seventy divided by that percent — twenty-eight years.

Every country that has industrialised has walked the same path, and geographers drew it as the demographic transition model.

Two lines: births on top, deaths below.

Watch the gap between them, because that gap is the natural increase.

Close together, the population barely changes. Pulled apart, it booms.

Five stages, and the order matters.

Stage one: both rates high, so growth is slow.

Stage two: the death rate falls first — better food, clean water, medicine — while births stay high, and the population booms. Stage three: births fall too, as families move to cities and girls stay in school.

Stage four: both low and steady. Stage five: births fall below deaths, and the country ages.

Alongside runs the epidemiological transition: deaths move from infectious disease to chronic, degenerative disease.

Countries answer by raising the retirement age, or welcoming immigrants.

Now the second half of the unit.

Migration is a permanent move to a new home, and every move is a tug of war.

Push factors drive people out of the origin: war, poverty, disaster, persecution.

Pull factors draw them to the destination: safety, education, employment, family, better services.

Between them sits the intervening obstacle — distance, cost, a closed border.

Migration comes in two families.

Forced migration gives no choice — people fleeing danger, and, in history, slavery.

The line the exam tests: a refugee crosses an international border — refugees are counted that way — while an internally displaced person, an I D P, stays inside their own country, and an asylum seeker is still asking for that status.

Voluntary migration is chosen, usually for work: chain migration follows family, step migration goes village to town to city, and rural-to-urban is the biggest internal flow today.

Ravenstein's laws saw it long ago — most moves are short, in steps, and for work.

Migration changes both ends, and the exam asks for the consequences on each.

The destination gains workers, usually young adults, and new culture — but housing, schools and services come under pressure.

The origin loses those same young adults, so it ages; if the leavers are doctors and engineers, that loss is brain drain.

In cities the cost of living is higher, so families have fewer children; fewer births lower the birth rate, so the urban rate falls below the rural rate.

First, divide by ten: the rates are per thousand, but natural increase is a percent, and doubling time is seventy over that percent.

Second, read the base of the pyramid — a wide base means stage two.
