A pointed finger is already language
- Before any words, infants point to direct another person's attention.
- That gesture already does what language does: it coordinates two minds on one thing.
- The CED begins language development here, in every culture studied.
Um dedo apontado já é linguagem
- Antes de qualquer palavra, bebês apontam para direcionar a atenção de outra pessoa.
- Esse gesto já faz o que a linguagem faz: coordena duas mentes sobre uma única coisa.
- O CED inicia o desenvolvimento da linguagem aqui, em toda cultura estudada.
The CED says people across all cultures use manual gestures such as pointing to communicate. · O CED diz que pessoas em todas as culturas usam gestos manuais, como apontar, para se comunicar.
Pointing coordinates two minds on one object — the job language later does with words. · Apontar coordena duas mentes sobre um único objeto — a função que a língua depois assume com palavras.
What language is
- Language 语言 is a shared, mutually agreed system of arbitrary symbols 任意符号.
- "Arbitrary" means nothing about the sound of a word resembles its meaning.
- Because the link is agreed rather than natural, a language must be learned socially.
O que é linguagem
- Linguagem 语言 é um sistema compartilhado e mutuamente acordado de símbolos arbitrários 任意符号。
- "Arbitrário" significa que nada sobre o som de uma palavra se assemelha ao seu significado.
- Como o vínculo é acordado e não natural, uma linguagem deve ser aprendida socialmente.
Saying a language's symbols are ____ means nothing about a word resembles its meaning. · Dizer que os símbolos de uma língua são ____ significa que nada sobre uma palavra se assemelha ao seu significado.
Because the link is agreed rather than natural, language must be learned socially. · Porque o vínculo é acordado e não natural, a língua deve ser aprendida socialmente.
The levels of a language
- Phonemes 音位 are the smallest sound units; morphemes 语素 are the smallest units carrying meaning.
- Semantics 语义 is meaning; syntax 句法 is the rules for combining units.
- A sentence can be syntactically perfect and semantically empty, which is why the two are named separately.
Os níveis de uma linguagem
- Fonemas 音位 são as menores unidades sonoras; morfemas 语素 são as menores unidades que carregam significado.
- Semântica 语义 é significado; sintaxe 句法 são as regras para combinar unidades.
- Uma frase pode ser sintaticamente perfeita e semanticamente vazia, pelo que as duas têm nomes separados.
Which level of language? · Qual nível de linguagem?
Sort each term by the level of language it describes. · Classifique cada termo pelo nível de linguagem que descreve.
Match each term to the level it names. · Combine cada termo ao nível que nomeia.
Sound, meaning and structure are three separate levels of the same system. · Som, significado e estrutura são três níveis separados do mesmo sistema.
Do not treat a child's grammatical mistakes as simply wrong. "Goed" and "foots" are evidence of rule learning — the child produced a form no adult modelled. Reporting them as errors misses the point the CED is making.
Não trate os erros gramaticais de uma criança como simplesmente errados. "Goed" e "foots" são evidência de aprendizado de regras — a criança produziu uma forma que nenhum modelo adulto apresentou. Relatá-los como erros perde o ponto que o CED está fazendo.
Put the stages of language acquisition in order. · Coloque as etapas da aquisição da linguagem em ordem.
The · A order · ordem is the same across languages; only the timing varies. · A ordem é a mesma através dos idiomas; apenas o tempo varia.
The order of acquisition
- Cooing 咕咕声, then babbling 咿呀语, then the one-word stage 单词阶段, then telegraphic speech 电报式语言.
- The order is the same across languages and cultures; the timing varies.
- That regularity is the strongest evidence that acquisition is not simply imitation.
A ordem de aquisição
- Cooing 咕咕声, depois babbling 咿呀语, depois a etapa de uma palavra 单词阶段, depois discurso telegráfico 电报式语言。
- A ordem é a mesma entre idiomas e culturas; o timing varia.
- Essa regularidade é a maior evidência de que a aquisição não é simplesmente imitação.
A child saying "goed" instead of "went" is evidence that the child... · Uma criança dizendo "goed" em vez de "went" é evidência de que a criança...
No adult models "goed", so the form must come from a rule · regra the child worked out. · Nenhum adulto modela "goed", então a forma deve vir de uma regra que a criança descobriu.
Overgeneralisation is evidence, not error
- A child who says "goed" has never heard an adult say it.
- Overgeneralisation 过度泛化 shows the child has extracted a rule and applied it.
- A mistake that could not have been copied is proof that a rule was learned, not a phrase.
Supergeneralização é evidência, não erro
- Uma criança que diz "goed" nunca ouviu um adulto dizer isso.
- Supergeneralização 过度泛化 mostra que a criança extraiu uma regra e a aplicou.
- Um erro que não poderia ter sido copiado é prova de que uma regra foi aprendida, não uma frase.
A two-year-old says "Daddy go car". Three words, no articles or inflections, and the meaning is unmistakable — telegraphic speech keeps the content words and drops everything the listener can supply.
Um bebê de dois anos diz "Daddy go car". Três palavras, sem artigos ou flexões, e o significado é inconfundível — o discurso telegráfico mantém as palavras de conteúdo e elimina tudo que o ouvinte pode fornecer.
Language is a shared system of arbitrary symbols, built from phonemes and morphemes and governed by semantics and syntax. Acquisition runs cooing → babbling → one-word → telegraphic in the same order everywhere, and overgeneralisation proves a rule was learned rather than copied.
Linguagem é um sistema compartilhado de símbolos arbitrários, construído a partir de fonemas e morfemas e regido por semântica e sintaxe. A aquisição segue cooing → babbling → one-word → telegraphic na mesma ordem em todos os lugares, e a supergeneralização prova que uma regra foi aprendida em vez de copiada.
