Descriptive words affect the reader
- Descriptive words, such as adjectives and adverbs, qualify or modify the things they describe and affect readers' interaction with the text.
- The second half is the new part: they change how the reader engages, not only what is described.
- So an adjective is doing something to you, not only to the noun.
An adjective can sneak an attitude into a line while pretending it only described the curtains.
Las palabras descriptivas afectan al lector
- Las palabras descriptivas, como los adjetivos y adverbios, califican o modifican lo que describen y afectan la interacción del lector con el texto.
- La segunda mitad es la parte nueva: cambian cómo se compromete el lector, no solo qué se describe.
- Por tanto, un adjetivo está haciendo algo en ti, no solo en el sustantivo.
Un adjetivo puede colar una actitud en una línea mientras finge que solo describía las cortinas.
Descriptive words qualify what they describe and also... · Las palabras descriptivas califican lo que describen y también...
So an adjective is doing something to you, not only to the noun. · Por tanto, un adjetivo hace algo no solo al sustantivo, sino también a usted.
Hyperbole exaggerates
- Hyperbole 夸张 exaggerates, and exaggerating an aspect of an object focuses attention on that trait and conveys a perspective about the object.
- Two effects, both stated: focus, and perspective.
- So a hyperbole tells you what the speaker wants you to look at and how they see it.
La hipérbole exagera
- La hipérbole exaggera, y exagerar un aspecto de un objeto centra la atención en esa cualidad y transmite una perspectiva sobre dicho objeto.
- Dos efectos, ambos explícitos: enfoque y perspectiva.
- Por tanto, una hipérbole te dice qué quiere que mires el hablante y cómo lo ve.
Select all · todos the effects the CED gives to exaggerating or minimizing. · Seleccione todas las efectos que la hipérbole y la ironía producen al exagerar o minimizar.
Both devices get exactly the same two effects. · Ambos dispositivos producen exactamente los mismos dos efectos.
Understatement minimizes
- Understatement 低调陈述 minimizes — and the CED gives it exactly the same two effects.
- Minimizing a trait focuses attention on it too, because the reader notices the mismatch.
- It was a difficult year about a catastrophe draws more attention than any adjective could.
La minimización reduce
- La minimización reduce — y el CED le otorga exactamente los mismos dos efectos.
- Reducir una cualidad también centra la atención en ella, porque el lector nota la discrepancia.
- Fue un año difícil sobre una catástrofe atrae más atención que cualquier adjetivo podría.
Hyperbole, understatement, or proportionate? · ¿Hipérbole, ironía o proporción?
Sort each description against what its object would warrant. · Clasifique cada descripción según lo que justificaría su objeto.
Understatement deflects the reader's attention away from the trait. · La ironía desvía la atención del lector hacia el rasgo.
It focuses attention on it — the reader notices the mismatch. · Centra la atención en él —el lector nota la discrepancia—.
Understatement draws attention rather than deflecting it. The CED gives minimizing the same two effects as exaggerating — it focuses attention on the trait and conveys a perspective. Reading an understatement as the speaker downplaying something gets the direction of the effect backwards.
La minimización atrae la atención en lugar de desviarla. El CED otorga a la minimización los mismos dos efectos que a la exageración: centra la atención en la cualidad y transmite una perspectiva. Leer una minimización como si el hablante estuviera restándole importancia invierte la dirección del efecto.
Both devices work by ____ against what would have been proportionate. · Ambos dispositivos funcionan mediante un ____ respecto a lo que sería proporcional.
The distance between the two is the size of the effect. · La distancia entre ambos determina la magnitud del efecto.
Both work by mismatch
- Neither device works on its own — each needs the reader to know roughly what would have been proportionate.
- So to analyse either, name what the proportionate description would have been.
- The distance between that and what is written is the size of the effect.
Ambos funcionan por discrepancia
- Ninguno de estos dispositivos funciona por sí solo; cada uno necesita que el lector sepa aproximadamente cuál habría sido la descripción proporcional.
- Por tanto, para analizar cualquiera de ellos, nombra cuál habría sido la descripción proporcional.
- La distancia entre eso y lo escrito es la magnitud del efecto.
Put the proportion pass in order. · Ordene el paso de proporción.
Writing the proportionate version is what makes the effect measurable. · Escribir la versión proporcional es lo que hace medible el efecto.
A proportion pass
- Find any description that seems too big or too small for its object.
- Write what a proportionate description would have said.
- Then name the trait now in focus, and the perspective the mismatch conveys.
Un paso hacia la proporción
- Encuentra cualquier descripción que parezca demasiado grande o demasiado pequeña para su objeto.
- Escribe lo que habría dicho una descripción proporcional.
- Luego, nombra la cualidad ahora en foco y la perspectiva que transmite la discrepancia.
Of a house burning down: "we were somewhat inconvenienced." A proportionate description would be devastating. The distance is the effect — the trait in focus is the scale of the loss, and the perspective conveyed is a refusal to be seen grieving in public.
Sobre una casa que se quema: "estuvimos algo incómodos." Una descripción proporcional sería devastador. La distancia es el efecto: la cualidad en foco es la magnitud de la pérdida, y la perspectiva transmitida es la negativa a ser visto llorando en público.
