The Economic Miracle ·
Reconstruction, financed from outside
- Marshall Plan funds from the United States financed an extensive reconstruction of industry and infrastructure and stimulated an extended period of growth in Western and Central Europe, often referred to as an "economic miracle," which increased the economic and cultural importance of consumerism.
- One sentence, four stages: funds → reconstruction → extended growth → consumerism.
- And the source is named: from the United States, which 8.2 had already made a world power.
Put the CED's four stages in order.
One sentence, four stages. ·
Economic, political and cultural at once
- The objective asks for change that is economic, political, and cultural — and the CED's one sentence supplies all three.
- Economic: reconstruction and extended growth. Cultural: the importance of consumerism.
- Political: money from one power rebuilding another's industry is an alliance-forming act, which 9.4 will name.
The CED locates the miracle in... · CED
The omission is deliberate — 9.4 explains it.
Consumerism returns, with more weight
- 6.3 already recorded heightened consumerism from the second industrial revolution.
- The CED's claim here is stronger: consumerism gains economic and cultural importance, i.e. it becomes a way of life, not only a market.
- 9.14's mass production, domestic comforts and consumer culture are the detail behind that phrase.
Economic, political, or cultural change? ·
Sort each consequence of postwar reconstruction. ·
The plan increased the economic and ____ importance of consumerism. ·
Consumerism becomes a way of life, not only a market. ·
The CED says Western and Central Europe, and the omission is deliberate. Countries east of the Iron Curtain followed an economic model based on central planning and lay outside this growth — so the miracle is also a divergence, and an answer should name both halves.
One CED sentence supplies economic, political and cultural change. · CED
Unusual, so use it exactly as written. ·
Where the miracle happened
- Western and Central Europe — the CED is specific, and 9.4 explains the omission.
- Countries east of the Iron Curtain followed an economic model based on central planning, outside this growth.
- So the miracle is also a divergence, and naming both halves is the accurate answer.
Consumerism had already appeared in this course at...
The claim here is stronger: economic and cultural importance. ·
From an economic cause to three kinds of change
- The strongest structure here is one cause and three consequences, each labelled.
- It is unusual for a single CED sentence to answer a three-part objective, so use it exactly as written.
- Then add the divergence from 9.4 as the limit of the claim.
Rebuilding a factory is an economic act. Choosing whose money rebuilds it is a political one. And a generation that grows up with the goods that factory makes has had its expectations set by both decisions without being asked about either.
Marshall Plan funds from the United States financed an extensive reconstruction of industry and infrastructure and stimulated an extended period of growth in Western and Central Europe, often referred to as an "economic miracle," which increased the economic and cultural importance of consumerism. One sentence covers all three kinds of change the objective asks for — and Western and Central marks the limit, since the east followed central planning instead.
