Most students assume a stronger-sounding claim scores better. 多数学生假定 听起来更强硬的主张分数更高。
The opposite is true, and it is easy to see why. 事实恰恰相反, 而且原因很容易看清。
An unqualified claim is easy to defeat with one counter-example, while a qualified claim survives it. 一个未加限定的主张 用一个反例就能被击倒, 而一个有限定的主张 能挺过去。
"Schools should ban phones" invites a single exception. "学校应当禁止手机" 招来一个例外就够了。
"Schools should restrict phone use during instructional time, where the cost to attention is measurable" does not. "学校应当在教学时段 限制手机使用, 因为在那里注意力的损失是可测量的", 则不会。
Introductions and conclusions revisited, first. 先是重新回到引言与结论。
Unit 7 returns to introductions and conclusions with more experience behind you. 第七单元在你有了更多经验之后 回到引言与结论。
On introductions, the CED's statement is unchanged: the introduction introduces subject and writer to the audience. 关于引言,课程大纲的说法没有变: 引言把题材与作者介绍给读者。
That is not "start with a hook". 那不是"用一个钩子开头"。
It is a job: the reader should know what this is about and who is speaking. 那是一项任务:读者应当知道这是关于什么、 以及是谁在说话。
The conclusion then brings the argument to a unified end. 结论则把论证带到一个统一的收束。
Those two jobs do not change in this unit. 这两项任务在本单元并不改变。
What changes is that you now have the syntax and the qualification to make them earn their place. 改变的是你现在有了句法和限定, 能让它们配得上自己的位置。
Three CED statements sit behind that. 这背后有课程大纲的三条说法。
A lack of understanding of the complexities of a subject can lead to oversimplification or generalisation. 对一个题材复杂性的理解不足, 会导致过度简化或以偏概全。
Because arguments are usually part of an ongoing discourse, effective arguments often avoid expressing claims in absolute terms. 由于论证通常 是一场持续对话的一部分, 有效的论证往往 避免用绝对化的措辞表达主张。
And writers may strategically use words, phrases and clauses as modifiers to qualify or limit the scope of an argument. 而作者可以有策略地 把词语、短语与分句用作修饰成分, 来限定或限制论证的范围。
The tools are ordinary words used deliberately: in most cases; where X holds; for this population; unless; to the extent that. 工具是被有意使用的普通词语: 在多数情况下;在 X 成立之处; 对这一人群而言;除非;就……而言。
Each narrows the claim to the ground the evidence actually covers. 每一个都把主张收窄到 证据实际覆盖的地面上。
And qualification is what the sophistication point most often rewards. 而限定正是精深度这一分 最常奖励的东西。
A student who states a position, then shows they know its limits and defends it anyway, has demonstrated exactly the control the rubric is looking for. 一个学生表明立场, 然后显示自己知道这一立场的限度, 并且依然为它辩护, 就展示了评分表所要寻找的 那种控制力。
Now syntax, and the CED is explicit enough here to make sentence structure analysable rather than decorative. 现在讲句法, 课程大纲在这里说得足够明确, 使句子结构成为可分析的东西, 而不只是装饰。
Writers express ideas in sentences made up of clauses, at least one of which must be independent. 作者用句子表达观念, 句子由分句构成, 其中至少有一个必须是独立分句。
Subordination and coordination express the intended relationship between ideas. 从属与并列 表达观念之间预期的关系。
Writers use coordination to illustrate balance or equality between ideas, and subordination to illustrate imbalance or inequality. 作者用并列 来体现观念之间的平衡或对等, 用从属 来体现不平衡或不对等。
Watch it work. 看它如何起作用。
"The measure was expensive, and it worked" treats cost and effect as equals. "这项措施代价高昂,而且它奏效了", 把代价与效果当作对等。
"Although the measure was expensive, it worked" subordinates the cost — it is still true, but it has been ranked below the result. "尽管这项措施代价高昂,它奏效了", 把代价放到从属位置, 它仍然为真, 但已经被排在结果之下。
Same facts, different argument. 同样的事实,不同的论证。
For your own writing, decide the relationship first, then choose the structure that expresses it: if two ideas genuinely carry equal weight, coordinate them; if one is a concession and the other your point, subordinate the concession, and put your point in the independent clause, where the emphasis falls. 对你自己的写作来说, 先决定关系, 再选择表达这一关系的结构: 如果两个观念真的分量相当,就并列; 如果一个是让步、另一个是你的观点, 就把让步放进从句, 并把你的观点放进独立分句, 重音落在那里。
The arrangement of sentences in a text can emphasise particular ideas, and so can the arrangement of clauses, phrases and words within a sentence. Sentence structure is not decoration. 文本中句子的安排 可以强调特定的观念, 句子内部从句、短语与词语的安排 同样可以。
It is a ranking of what matters. 句子结构不是装饰。
Put the idea you want remembered where the sentence gives it weight. That is the whole skill. 它是对什么更重要的排序。
Then grammar, mechanics, and clarity. 然后是语法、用法与清晰。
Grammar and mechanics that follow established conventions enable clear communication — but the CED goes further. 遵循既有规范的语法与用法 使清晰的表达成为可能, 但课程大纲还更进一步。
Writers use punctuation strategically to demonstrate relationships among ideas, and punctuation advances the argument. 作者有策略地使用标点, 以显示观念之间的关系, 而标点推进论证。
Design features such as italics or boldface create emphasis. 斜体或粗体这类版面手段 制造强调。
The examinable framing is that punctuation is argumentative, not merely correct. 可考的表述方式是: 标点是论辩性的, 而不只是"正确"。
A colon promises that what follows explains what preceded. 冒号承诺 接下来的内容解释前面的内容。
A semicolon asserts that two independent statements belong together. 分号断言 两个独立的陈述属于一起。
A dash interrupts, and the interruption is the point. 破折号打断, 而这个打断本身就是要点。
So never write "the writer uses a semicolon" without saying what relationship it asserts — that sentence is the punctuation version of naming a device and stopping. 所以, 绝不要写"作者使用了一个分号" 却不说它断言了什么关系, 那一句 就是标点版的 "说出手法名称然后停住"。
A rhetorical-analysis passage reads: "The programme was popular; it was also, by every measure the department itself proposed, ineffective." 一段修辞分析材料这样写: "这个项目很受欢迎;它也, 按该部门自己提出的每一项标准, 都没有效果。
A low answer notes "the writer uses a semicolon". " 低分答案只说"作者用了分号"。
A scoring answer explains the structure. 得分答案解释结构。
The semicolon presents the two facts as equal and simultaneous rather than as a contrast, so the reader cannot dismiss the failure as an objection to popularity — both are simply true at once. 分号把两个事实呈现为对等且同时成立, 而不是对照, 于是读者不能把失败当成对受欢迎的反驳—— 两者只是同时为真。
The parenthetical "by every measure the department itself proposed" then removes the department's escape route before the word "ineffective" arrives. 括号里的"按该部门自己提出的每一项标准" 在"没有效果"到来之前 就关掉了部门的退路。
That is syntax analysed as argument. 这就是把句法当作论证来分析。
Unit 7 also returns to conclusions with more experience behind you, and the useful upgrade is to make the conclusion do the work the CED permits. 第七单元 也在你有了更多经验之后 重新回到结论, 而有用的提升 是让结论去做 课程大纲允许它做的事。
It may explain the significance of the argument — why it matters that this is true. 它可以说明论证的意义, 也就是"这件事为真"为什么重要。
It may situate the argument in a broader context — what larger question it belongs to. 它可以把论证放进更广的语境, 也就是它属于哪个更大的问题。
Or it may present the thesis in its final, now-earned form. 或者它可以以最终的、 如今已被赢得的形式 呈现论点。
That third is the strongest under exam conditions: restate the thesis in language you could not have used in the introduction, because the argument had not yet been made. 第三种在考试条件下最有力: 用你在引言里不可能使用的语言 重述论点, 因为那时论证还没有被做出来。
Five things to carry out. 带走五件事。
First, qualify your claims — an absolute claim is defeated by one counter-example. 第一,给你的主张加上限定, 绝对化的主张 一个反例就能击倒。
Second, qualification is the most reliable route to the sophistication point. 第二,限定 是通往精深度那一分最可靠的路径。
Third, coordination is balance and subordination is imbalance. 第三,并列是平衡, 从属是不平衡。
Fourth, put your point in the independent clause and concessions in the subordinate one. 第四,把你的观点放进独立分句, 把让步放进从句。
Fifth, punctuation advances the argument, so never name a mark without saying what relationship it asserts. 第五,标点推进论证, 所以绝不要只说出一个标点的名称 而不说它断言了什么关系。
