Almost everything in the room around you was made in a factory and carried here on a ship.
Two hundred and fifty years ago, almost nobody lived like this.
Then machines arrived, and the world split: some places grew rich, and others did not.
Unit Seven asks why.
Welcome to Unit Seven.
Here is the plan.
First, the Industrial Revolution.
Then the economic sectors, and where a factory sits.
Then how we measure development.
Then the two rival theories.
Then trade and restructuring.
And last, sustainable development.
The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the seventeen hundreds.
Production shifted from hand tools in homes to machines in factories.
It spread outward, carried by new technology and by money.
And it drove urbanization, as workers left the land for the factory cities.
Industry clustered where coal, iron and transport met, above all at break-of-bulk points.
Now the economic sectors and their patterns — the words the exam uses.
Every job belongs to a sector.
Primary takes raw materials and resources out of the earth: farming, mining, fishing.
Secondary makes things, so that is the factory.
Tertiary is services: shops, transport, hospitals.
Quaternary is information and research, and quinary is the top decisions.
As a country develops, jobs shift toward services.
Watch what development does to that mix.
In a poor, pre-industrial economy most people work in the primary sector.
As industry arrives, the secondary curve rises and peaks.
Then it falls, while tertiary work keeps climbing until services are the biggest share.
Quaternary work grows late, small but powerful.
Where does a factory go?
Weber said: wherever total cost is lowest.
Put the materials and the market at the corners of a triangle, and it becomes a tug of war.
Heavy raw material, light product: build near the materials. Bulky product, like a drink that is mostly water: build near the market.
The factory moves toward whatever is expensive to shift.
How do we measure development?
Gross Domestic Product per capita, G D P per capita, is output per person, and gross national income is close to it.
Both are money only.
The Human Development Index, H D I, adds two strands: education, in years of schooling, and health, as life expectancy.
The Gender Inequality Index and the Gini coefficient add the social detail money misses.
And the informal economy is never recorded, so no measure sees it.
Two countries share a gross domestic product per capita of twenty thousand dollars.
Here is the extra data.
In country X, life expectancy is seventy-nine and schooling twelve years. X
In country Y, sixty-one and six. Y
Do they have the same level of development?
Pause and try it yourself.
Compare them strand by strand.
On income they are exactly the same.
On the other two strands, country Y is far behind.
So the answer is no: the same money, a far lower development score.
And an average also hides who actually gets the money.
Development also changes the lives of women.
As a country develops, the roles of women change: more women take paid work, and more girls stay in school.
More schooling means a woman marries later.
Marrying later means fewer children.
So the fertility rate falls.
But the gap does not close by itself: women still earn less and hold fewer top jobs, which the Gender Inequality Index, G I I, tracks.
Microfinance is one answer — small loans, mostly to women — that lifts living standards.
Now the argument at the centre of this unit: why are some regions rich and others poor?
Rostow answers with five stages, from traditional farming to mass consumption.
Wallerstein answers with position: a rich core, a poor periphery, a semi-periphery between.
Dependency theory sharpens that: poor countries are kept dependent.
Rostow's model is a staircase every country climbs.
Traditional society: farming, little trade.
Preconditions for take-off: roads, ports, new ideas.
Take-off: factories arrive and growth becomes normal, the step that changes everything.
Drive to maturity: industry spreads.
Then mass consumption.
The critique: not every country starts on the same step.
Wallerstein disagreed.
Countries do not climb separate staircases; they share one world economy, and your position in it shapes your future.
Cheap materials and cheap labour flow inward to the core. Finished goods and profit flow back out.
The semi-periphery sits between.
That is dependency: the core stays rich on what the periphery sends it.
Trade ties this together.
Comparative advantage says each country should specialise in what it gives up least to make, then trade for the rest.
Complementarity — each having what the other wants — is what makes a trade worth making, and neoliberal free-trade policies plus the W T O and trade blocs have deepened globalization.
Tariffs are taxes on imports, while free-trade agreements remove barriers.
And outsourcing, deindustrialization and special economic zones move production to where labour is cheapest.
Watch comparative advantage work.
Country A can make ten wheat or five cloth.
Country B can make six wheat or six cloth. B
Ask who gives up less. For A, one cloth costs two wheat. For B, one cloth costs one wheat.
So B is the cheaper cloth maker.
B makes all the cloth, A makes all the wheat, they trade, and both end up with more.
Specialise where your opportunity cost is lowest.
A real exam question, from twenty twenty-five.
Explain how deindustrialization has affected the economy of core countries.
Pause and try it yourself.
Start at the command word.
Explain wants a mechanism: name the change, then carry it to its effect.
First, factories in core countries closed or moved abroad.
So many manufacturing workers lost their jobs.
Meanwhile, tertiary and quaternary jobs grew, in services and high technology.
And here is the trap: one word, unemployment, is not an explanation.
Last, sustainability, where the evaluation marks live.
Sustainable development means meeting today's needs without harming the future's ability to meet theirs.
It balances three pillars: economic growth, social fairness and environmental protection.
An ecological footprint measures how much of the earth a population uses.
Ecotourism and the U N's Sustainable Development Goals, the SDGs, guide progress today.
Five marks students throw away.
First, name the sector, then tie it to development.
Second, prefer the Human Development Index over income alone, and say which strand money misses.
Third, keep Rostow apart from world systems and dependency: a staircase versus a position.
Fourth, in any trade answer, use comparative advantage and the effect of tariffs.
Fifth, bring in sustainability and the ecological footprint to evaluate.
Get those right, and Unit Seven is yours.
