Closed and Open Forms · Formas Cerradas y Abiertas
Closed forms are predictable on purpose
- Closed forms of poetry include predictable patterns in the structure of lines, stanzas, meter and rhyme, which develop relationships among ideas in the poem.
- Predictability is the working part: a pattern makes a departure visible.
- So the form is not a container for the meaning — it is one of the ways the meaning is made.
A closed form is a staircase with regular steps; notice when the poet chooses to skip one.
The AP Exam requires you to identify the rhyme scheme and metre.
The CED states outright that it will not · no require labelling schemes, metres or forms.
Select all · todos the elements a closed form makes predictable.
Subject matter is not part of form.
You are not asked to name the form
- The CED adds a note in its own voice: the AP Exam will not require students to label or identify specific rhyme schemes, metrical patterns or forms of poetry.
- So ABAB and iambic pentameter are not what is being marked.
- What is marked is what the pattern does — and you can describe that without naming it.
Open-form poems have no structure.
They may still have structures that develop relationships between ideas — invented ones.
Open forms still have structure
- Open forms may not follow expected or predictable patterns, but they may still have structures that develop relationships between ideas.
- So "free verse has no structure" is simply false, and the CED says so directly.
- Look for the structure the poem invented for itself: recurring length, a returning image, a repeated turn.
Closed pattern, invented structure, or a combination? · ¿Patrón cerrado, estructura inventada o una combinación?
Sort each observation by the CED's categories.
"Free verse has no structure" is contradicted by the CED itself. Open forms may still have structures that develop relationships between ideas — invented rather than inherited. Saying a poem has no structure is a claim you would have to prove, and it is almost never true.
Structures ____ in texts to emphasize certain ideas and concepts.
The strongest structural analysis is usually about two structures agreeing or disagreeing.
Structures combine
- Structures combine in texts to emphasize certain ideas and concepts.
- A stanza break falling at the same place as a sentence end says one thing; falling mid-sentence says another.
- The strongest structural analysis is usually about two structures agreeing or disagreeing.
Put the form pass in order. · Ordene el paso de la forma.
None of these steps needs the name of a form.
A form pass without naming anything
- Describe the pattern in plain words: four-line stanzas, the last line always shorter.
- Find where the pattern breaks, and say what sits there.
- Then check whether sentence endings and line endings agree — and where they stop agreeing.
An open-form poem has no rhyme and no fixed line length, but every stanza begins with a place name and ends with a question. That is a structure — invented, consistent, and doing the same job a closed form's pattern would do: it makes the one stanza that ends in a statement unmistakable.
Closed forms use predictable patterns of lines, stanzas, meter and rhyme to develop relationships among ideas; open forms may still have structures they invent. You are not required to label rhyme schemes, meters or forms. Structures combine, and the strongest analysis is usually about two of them agreeing or disagreeing.
No estás obligado a etiquetar esquemas rimáticos, metros o formas.
