Every pronoun points somewhere
- An antecedent 先行词 is a word, phrase or clause that precedes its referent.
- Referents may be pronouns, nouns, phrases or clauses — not only it and she.
- Tracking what points to what is the most basic close reading there is, and poems break it deliberately.
If “it” has three possible owners, the pronoun has lost its name tag.
Todo pronombre señala algo
- Un antecedente es una palabra, frase o cláusula que precede a su referente.
- Los referentes pueden ser pronombres, sustantivos, frases o cláusulas; no solo it y she.
- Rastrear qué señala a qué es la lectura atenta más básica, y los poemas lo hacen deliberadamente.
Si “it” tiene tres posibles dueños, el pronombre ha perdido su etiqueta.
An antecedent is... · Un antecedente es...
And referents may be pronouns, nouns, phrases or clauses — not only it and · y she. · Y los referentes pueden ser pronombres, sustantivos, frases o cláusulas — no solo it y she.
Ambiguity is a technique
- Referents are ambiguous if they can refer to more than one antecedent, which affects interpretation.
- In prose that is usually an error; in a poem it is usually a choice.
- When it could mean two things, the poem is holding both — say so, rather than picking one.
La ambigüedad es una técnica
- Los referentes son ambiguos si pueden referirse a más de un antecedente, lo cual afecta la interpretación.
- En la prosa esto suele ser un error; en un poema, suele ser una elección.
- Cuando it podría significar dos cosas, el poema las mantiene ambas —di así, en lugar de elegir una.
In a poem, an ambiguous referent should be resolved by choosing the likelier meaning. · En un poema, un referente ambiguo debe resolverse eligiendo el significado más probable.
Ambiguity affects interpretation; the poem is holding both, so say so. · La ambigüedad afecta la interpretación; el poema mantiene ambas posibilidades, así que dígalo.
Repetition
- Words or phrases may be repeated to emphasize ideas or associations.
- The second use of a word is never identical to the first: it now carries where it has been.
- So analyse a repetition by saying what happened to the word in between.
Repetición
- Las palabras o frases pueden repetirse para enfatizar ideas o asociaciones.
- El segundo uso de una palabra nunca es idéntico al primero: ahora carga con todo lo que ha recorrido desde entonces.
- Por tanto, analiza una repetición explicando qué le sucedió a la palabra entre ambos usos.
Which word-level device is at work? · ¿Qué dispositivo a nivel de palabra está en juego?
Sort each observation by the device the CED names. · Clasifique cada observación según el dispositivo que identifica el CED.
Analyse a repetition by saying what happened to the word in ____. · Analice una repetición indicando qué le sucedió a la palabra en ____.
The second use is never identical to the first — it carries where it has been. · El segundo uso nunca es idéntico al primero — lleva consigo el camino recorrido.
Noticing alliteration is not analysing it. The CED says alliteration emphasizes those words and their associations — so the analysis names which words the sound binds together and what they now share. "There is alliteration in line 4" earns nothing.
Notar la aliteración no es analizarla. El CED dice que la aliteración enfatiza esas palabras y sus asociaciones; por eso, el análisis debe nombrar qué palabras une el sonido y qué comparten ahora. Decir “hay aliteración en la línea 4” no aporta nada.
Select all · todos the parts of an alliteration analysis. · Seleccione todos los componentes del análisis de una aliteración.
Syllable-counting is metrics, not an account of what the alliteration emphasizes. · Contar sílabas es métrica, no un recuento de lo que enfatiza la aliteración.
Alliteration
- Alliteration 头韵 is the repetition of the same letter sound at the beginning of adjacent or nearby words.
- Its stated purpose is to emphasize those words and their associations or representations.
- So an analysis must name the words it binds — not merely note that a sound recurs.
Aliteración
- La aliteración es la repetición del mismo sonido inicial en palabras adyacentes o cercanas.
- Su propósito declarado es enfatizar esas palabras y sus asociaciones o representaciones.
- Por tanto, un análisis debe nombrar qué palabras une, no simplemente señalar que un sonido se repite.
Match each device to the question that analyses it. · Empareje cada dispositivo con la pregunta que lo analiza.
Each question forces the analysis past merely spotting the device. · Cada pregunta obliga al análisis a ir más allá de simplemente identificar el dispositivo.
A word-level pass
- Trace every pronoun to its antecedent, and mark any that has two.
- Circle every repeated word and say what changed between uses.
- For alliteration, name the words bound together and what they now share.
Revisión a nivel léxico
- Rastrea cada pronombre hasta su antecedente y marca aquellos que tienen dos.
- Encierra en un círculo cada palabra repetida y explica qué cambió entre los usos.
- Para la aliteración, nombra las palabras unidas y qué comparten ahora.
"the still, shut, sunless room" binds three words by sound. Analysis: the alliteration makes still, shut and sunless read as one property rather than three descriptions, so the room is not merely dark — it is a single closed condition the speaker cannot separate into parts.
“the still, shut, sunless room” (la habitación silenciosa, cerrada y sin sol) une tres palabras por el sonido. Análisis: la aliteración hace que still, shut y sunless se lean como una sola propiedad en lugar de tres descripciones separadas, por lo que la habitación no es simplemente oscura, sino una condición única e indivisible de clausura que el hablante no puede descomponer en partes.
An antecedent precedes its referent; referents may be pronouns, nouns, phrases or clauses, and ambiguous ones affect interpretation — in a poem, usually on purpose. Repetition emphasizes ideas or associations. Alliteration repeats an initial sound to emphasize those words and their associations — so name the words it binds.
