When Evidence Changes the Thesis ·
The thesis you began with was a guess
- You wrote it before you had read everything, which means it was a hypothesis.
- Hypotheses are supposed to change when the evidence arrives.
- Students treat the first thesis as a commitment, and that is where essays go wrong.
Your first thesis is a pencil sketch, not a tattoo; new evidence is allowed to move a line.
What the CED says
- Consideration and use of new evidence may require revision of the thesis statement and/or changes to the line of reasoning.
- This is stated as a normal part of the process, not as a failure.
- Both the thesis and the reasoning are revisable.
The CED treats revising a thesis in response to evidence as a normal part of the process. · CED
It states that new evidence may require revision of the thesis and the line of reasoning. ·
Reading for a responsive thesis
- In a text, look for the place where the argument turns.
- A writer who narrows a claim mid-essay is responding to something — often an objection they have just raised themselves.
- That responsiveness is a strength to note, not an inconsistency to catch.
How should this thesis move? ·
Match each evidence situation to the revision it calls for.
Match each reading observation to what it shows.
Responsiveness is a strength; refusing to respond is the weakness. ·
Changing your thesis mid-essay is not an admission of failure — the CED names it as part of the process. What loses marks is the opposite: keeping a thesis your own evidence has already undermined, and hoping the reader does not notice.
Select all · 所有 the ways a thesis can move in response to evidence.
Length is not a form of revision. ·
Three ways a thesis moves
- Narrowing: the claim survives on less ground than you first claimed.
- Qualifying: the claim holds under stated conditions.
- Reversing: the evidence points the other way, and you follow it.
If a paragraph you have written undermines your thesis, you should...
Examiners reward an argument that fits its evidence; nothing rewards loyalty to your first sentence. ·
Under exam conditions, sketch your claims ____ fixing the thesis. ·
Most revision then happens on scrap paper, at no cost to the essay. ·
Under exam conditions
- Read the sources and sketch claims before fixing a thesis — most revision then happens on scrap paper, free.
- If you have already written a paragraph that undermines your thesis, change the thesis, not the paragraph.
- Examiners reward an argument that fits its evidence; nothing rewards loyalty to your first sentence.
A student begins: "The scheme should be abandoned." Two sources later, the evidence shows it works for one group and fails another. The revised thesis — "The scheme should be redirected, not abandoned" — is stronger, and it is the evidence that wrote it.
New evidence may require revision of the thesis and of the line of reasoning — the CED names this as normal. A thesis can be narrowed, qualified or reversed. Sketch claims before fixing a thesis, and if a paragraph undermines it, change the thesis.
