Your heart beats about a hundred thousand times a day, and it has never once stopped to rest.
It is not really one pump — it is two, side by side, sharing a wall.
One side sends blood to your lungs.
The other sends it to everywhere else.
Understand why there are two, and most of this topic falls into place.
Welcome to transport in animals.
The heart, the blood vessels, and the blood itself.
Let's begin.
Follow one drop of blood.
It goes to the lungs, comes back to the heart, then goes to the body, and comes back again.
Two loops, one heart.
The circulatory system has three parts: a pump, which is the heart; a network of blood vessels; and valves that keep blood flowing one way only.
Now the supplement comparison.
A fish has a single circulation — its blood passes through the heart once on each trip round the body.
A mammal has a double circulation: the blood passes through the heart twice, once on the way to the lungs and once on the way to the rest of the body.
And here is the advantage, which is the mark: the blood can be pumped again at high pressure before it goes to the body, so it travels faster and delivers oxygen quickly.
The heart is made of muscle, and a wall called the septum divides it into a left side and a right side.
On each side there is an upper chamber, the atrium, and a lower chamber, the ventricle.
Valves between them stop blood flowing backwards.
The septum does one crucial job: it keeps oxygenated blood on the left apart from deoxygenated blood on the right, so the two never mix.
And the classic question: why is the wall of the left ventricle thicker than the right?
Because the left must pump blood all the way around the body, while the right only pumps it to the nearby lungs.
The atria have thin walls.
They only push blood into the ventricles just below them, so they do not need a thick muscle.
The left ventricle is the opposite: its wall is the thickest in the heart, because it must drive blood all the way around the body.
The right ventricle only has to reach the nearby lungs, so its wall is thinner.
Name the wall, and you have named the job.
Watch one beat.
The upper chambers squeeze, then the lower chambers squeeze, then everything relaxes and fills again.
In words, for the supplement paper, there are three stages.
One: the atria contract and push blood down into the ventricles.
Two: the ventricles contract and force blood out into the arteries, and the valves snap shut so blood cannot flow back.
Name them for the supplement: the valves between each atrium and ventricle are the atrioventricular valves, and the valves at the exit of each ventricle are the semilunar valves.
Three: the muscle relaxes and the heart fills with blood again.
And remember the simple rule that goes with it — blood is pumped away from the heart in arteries, and returns to the heart in veins.
Arteries away, veins back.
You can check the heart's activity with an E C G, by feeling the pulse in an artery, or by listening to the valves closing.
During exercise the heart rate goes up, so blood reaches the muscles faster, bringing the extra oxygen and glucose they need.
Now the calculation.
A student counts eighteen beats in fifteen seconds at rest, and thirty-three beats in fifteen seconds straight after exercise.
A minute holds four lots of fifteen seconds, so multiply by four.
At rest, eighteen times four is seventy-two beats per minute.
After exercise, thirty-three times four is one hundred and thirty-two beats per minute.
Writing the fifteen-second count straight down is the commonest mistake — always scale it up to a full minute.
The heart muscle has its own blood supply, through the coronary arteries.
Coronary heart disease happens when those arteries become narrow or blocked, so the heart muscle cannot get enough oxygen.
Learn the risk factors: a diet high in fat, lack of exercise, stress, smoking, family history, older age, and being male.
Notice that some of those you can change and some you cannot.
A healthy diet and regular exercise lower the risk — and those are the two the exam wants when it asks how to reduce it.
Three kinds of blood vessel, each built for its job.
The space inside a vessel is the lumen.
Arteries carry blood away from the heart at high pressure, so they have thick, muscular, elastic walls and a narrow lumen, and no valves.
Veins carry blood back at low pressure, so they have thin walls and a wide lumen — and they do have valves, because low-pressure blood could otherwise flow backwards.
Capillaries are where exchange happens: walls one cell thick and very narrow, giving a large surface area and a short distance.
Capillaries are where the real work happens.
Their walls are one cell thick, and the lumen is very narrow.
That gives a large surface area and a short distance, so exchange is fast.
Oxygen and glucose leave the blood and enter the cells.
Wastes, including carbon dioxide, go the other way.
That is why every tissue is wrapped in a capillary network.
That exchange is the whole point of a capillary.
Now the names, and a pattern makes them easy.
For the body, blood leaves in the aorta and returns in the vena cava.
For the lungs, it leaves in the pulmonary artery and returns in the pulmonary vein.
For the kidney, the renal artery in and the renal vein out — the artery and vein share a name for each organ.
One odd one for the supplement paper: the hepatic portal vein, which brings blood from the gut to the liver, not from the heart.
The liver has three vessels, not two.
The hepatic artery brings oxygenated blood from the heart.
The hepatic vein takes blood away, back towards the heart.
The odd one is the hepatic portal vein: it brings blood from the gut to the liver, carrying the products of digestion, not from the heart.
The exam loves that exception.
Write portal, write gut to liver, and the mark is yours.
Blood has four parts, and you need one function for each.
Red blood cells carry oxygen, using the red pigment haemoglobin.
White blood cells defend the body against disease.
Platelets help the blood to clot.
And plasma is the liquid that carries everything else — the blood cells themselves, plus ions, nutrients, urea, hormones and carbon dioxide.
If a question asks what transports a dissolved substance, the answer is almost always plasma.
White blood cells fight pathogens — the microbes that cause disease — in two different ways, and the exam wants both.
Phagocytes carry out phagocytosis: they surround and digest the pathogens.
Lymphocytes make antibodies, which stick to the pathogens and destroy them.
And when you cut yourself, the blood clots to seal the wound, which does two jobs: it stops blood loss and stops pathogens getting in.
For the supplement paper: a soluble protein called fibrinogen is changed into threads of fibrin, which form a net that traps blood cells and makes a solid clot.
Three marks to lock in.
First: the left ventricle wall is thickest because it pumps to the whole body, while the right only pumps to the lungs.
Second: arteries away, veins back — arteries thick and high pressure, veins with valves at low pressure, capillaries one cell thick for exchange.
Third: phagocytes engulf pathogens; lymphocytes make antibodies.
Master these, and this topic is yours.
