Two arguments dominate this period, and they look unrelated until you see what they share.
How far should the United States go to contain communism abroad?
And how far should the federal government go to guarantee rights and welfare at home?
Both are arguments about the reach of national power.
That is why the same decades that build the largest peacetime military also build Medicare, and why the same confidence collapses in both places at once.
The Cold War, from 1945 to 1980, is the first of the two arguments.
Define containment precisely, because the definition does the work in the essay.
Containment means preventing the spread of communism, not attempting to remove it.
Rollback is the policy the United States did not adopt.
The tools were the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan and NATO.
And then containment produced commitments the country had not anticipated: the Korean War, a permanent peacetime military establishment, an arms race and a space race.
Once you have the definition, Korea and Vietnam stop being separate topics to memorise. They are consequences of one policy.
Fear of communism reshaped domestic politics.
Loyalty programmes, congressional investigations and McCarthyism targeted suspected communists in government, universities, unions and the entertainment industry.
But a list of accusations is not an answer.
The mark is in the cost to civil liberties: accusation often functioned as proof, and the fear narrowed the range of acceptable political debate for a decade.
Write the consequence, not the chronology.
Prosperity and its discontents, next.
The postwar economy grew strongly, and federal money drove it: spending on defence, highways, and the GI Bill supported home ownership and higher education, and the population moved to the suburbs and to the Sun Belt.
Culture followed — mass consumption, television, a youth culture with its own music and markets.
But prosperity was uneven, and that unevenness is the setup for everything after it.
Suburban growth was frequently closed to African Americans by law and by practice, cities lost tax base and jobs, and poverty persisted in ways the decade's own self-image obscured.
The civil rights movement has a shape, and the shape is worth more than any individual fact.
Early steps worked mainly through the courts, and legal strategy produced Brown v. Board of Education, which held segregated schooling unconstitutional and stripped away segregation's legal basis.
But court victories do not enforce themselves, so the movement turned to direct action: the Montgomery bus boycott, sit-ins, freedom rides and mass marches, organised through churches and student groups and grounded in nonviolent protest.
Sustained pressure, and televised violence against protesters, produced legislation: the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The movement then expanded, raising questions of economic inequality, housing and policing, and some activists rejected nonviolence and integration in favour of Black Power.
Courts, then direct action, then legislation — each stage creating the conditions for the next.
Two things happen in the same presidency, and the exam wants them together.
The Great Society extended federal responsibility further than anything since the New Deal, so name what it did: Medicare and Medicaid, federal aid to education, and the War on Poverty.
Do not call it "reforms".
Meanwhile the Vietnam War grew out of containment and consumed that same presidency.
Escalation without decisive results produced a large antiwar movement, deep political division, and a credibility gap between government statements and reported reality.
Defeat abroad and disillusion at home weakened confidence in federal power at the exact moment its domestic role peaked.
Society in transition closes the period, and every group's contribution to it is examinable.
The later part of the period is defined by movements and by limits.
The women's movement pressed for legal equality and workplace access, and the Equal Rights Amendment failed ratification.
Environmental concern grew into federal action on air, water and endangered species.
Immigration law was reformed in 1965, changing the origins of new arrivals.
And conservatism organised in response to all of it — on taxes, on social change, and on the size of government.
That is the movement Period 9 opens with.
Underneath, economic trouble sharpened everything: inflation, oil shocks and industrial decline ended the postwar boom.
The period's reasoning skill is continuity and change, and here the pairing is unusually clean.
Rights expanded enormously in law.
Economic inequality and residential segregation persisted.
Both statements belong in a strong answer, and putting them in the same sentence is what turns a description into an argument about extent.
The 2023 exam asked you to evaluate the extent to which the growth of civil rights activism contributed to changes in government action.
Pause and try a thesis.
Step one: make activism the cause.
Step two: name Brown, then the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Step three: federal action followed that pressure rather than leading it.
A contribution question wants the link, not a description of the movement on its own. That is how you score the contribution question.
Five things to carry out.
First, containment prevents spread; it is not rollback.
Second, the Red Scare is scored on the cost to civil liberties.
Third, civil rights runs courts, then direct action, then legislation.
Fourth, say what the Great Society did — Medicare, Medicaid, education aid.
Fifth, pair the legal gains with persistent economic and residential inequality.
