Look at these three drawings.
No paint. No colour. Just a pencil, a pen, a needle on a metal plate.
Every shadow you can see here is built out of marks: lines laid side by side, crossing each other, packed tight or left open.
Artists have built whole worlds this way for five hundred years.
This is Topic One: line and mark-making.
It is the first drawing skill the scoring rubric names, and the rest of your portfolio sits on top of it. We start with the quality of a single line.
Then contour and gesture, two very different ways of looking. Then the mark systems that build tone. And finally texture, and marks that carry feeling.
Here is one edge, drawn four ways.
The even line keeps the same width from start to finish: clear, but flat.
The weighted line changes thickness as it travels — press harder where the form turns away from the light.
The lost-and-found line fades out and comes back, and your eye finishes the edge for you.
And the expressive line is fast and personal; it shows the hand that made it.
Direction carries feeling as well.
A horizontal line lies down, so it feels calm. A vertical line stands up, so it feels firm. A diagonal line leans, so it feels active, even unstable.
Choose the direction that matches your idea.
An examiner reads this in one second, before reading anything else.
A contour line traces an edge.
Michelangelo drew this study in red chalk, slowly.
Follow the outer edge of the back and the arm — one long, careful look.
Now look inside the shape: folds and muscles make inner contours, and where one edge passes in front of another you feel depth at once.
Then try blind contour: draw the edge without looking at your paper.
It trains your eye faster than anything else.
Here is the trick that turns a flat shape into a solid one.
Draw a circle, and fill it with straight lines.
It stays flat — a disc with stripes.
Now curve those same lines, so they bend around the form, like the lines on a globe.
Nothing else changed: same shape, same edge.
But now it is a ball.
Lines that travel across a form describe volume.
That is cross-contour.
Contour is slow. Gesture is the opposite: thirty seconds, sometimes less.
Start with the line of action — one curve that carries the movement of the whole pose.
Then block the big masses: the chest, the hips, the sweep of the limbs.
Detail comes last, and in a gesture drawing it usually never comes at all.
Gesture asks what the subject is doing, not what it looks like.
So draw the whole figure, never one polished corner.
Now, tone.
Dürer drew these hands with a fine brush on blue paper, five hundred years ago.
Look at the back of the hand: lines run in one direction, a second set crosses them, and the tone drops deeper.
Look at the sleeve: the lines follow the fold, so the cloth turns and rounds.
Now the fingertips: the lines open out, the paper shows through, and the light comes back.
Every value here is line density.
So how do you build that?
Start with one layer of parallel lines, evenly spaced. That gives a light, even grey.
Add a second layer, crossing the first at a new angle, and the grey gets darker.
A third layer, darker again.
You are not pressing harder — you are adding lines.
And keep one angle inside one plane: change the angle only when the plane changes.
That is why a hatched drawing has crisp edges instead of a smudge.
Why does that matter?
Because drawing is really about value — how light or dark a thing is, and nothing to do with colour.
Here is the standard scale, from white to black.
Four of these values are enough to turn a flat disc into a ball.
Hatching is simply how a pen reaches them.
Hatching is one system. Here are six.
Hatching: parallel lines at one angle.
Cross-hatching: layers at crossing angles.
Cross-contour: the same lines, curved to follow the form.
Stippling builds tone out of dots — slow, but completely under your control.
Scribble is fast tangles, perfect for fur, foliage and energy.
Broken marks are dashes and ticks that suggest texture without outlining every detail.
Six systems, one rule: denser marks read darker.
Marks always live on a surface.
Seurat drew this man with conté crayon on rough paper, and there is not one visible line in it.
The paper did the work: the raised grain caught the crayon, and the little hollows stayed white.
That is actual texture — the real roughness of your paper.
Drawn texture, the illusion of fur or cloth, is implied texture.
Paper tooth changes every mark: the same pencil reads differently on smooth and rough paper.
Frottage — rubbing over a textured surface — transfers real texture into a drawing.
Change your paper, and every mark changes with it.
The same subject, drawn with angry marks or with quiet marks, tells two different stories.
Expressive lines exaggerate speed, pressure and direction to carry a feeling, not only to describe a shape.
Käthe Kollwitz pressed heavy charcoal into the paper. Egon Schiele's contours are thin and tense.
Distortion is a legitimate choice when it serves your idea.
Accurate is not the only goal, and your marks are your voice.
Now the portfolio task, done properly.
Your inquiry question is: what does exam pressure feel like?
Your subject is an empty desk at night.
Option one: soft graphite, smooth even lines, gentle shading — calm and careful.
Option two: hard, fast, scratchy marks that break and cross — restless.
Both show skill, but only one answers your question, so choose option two.
Then write one sentence in your written evidence: scratchy graphite lines echo the anxiety of exam season.
That sentence names the mark and links it to the idea, and that link is what scores.
Pause the video here, and answer these four out loud.
What do cross-contour lines describe — edges, or volume?
In pen and ink, where does value come from?
What do you look for first in a gesture drawing?
And is lifting charcoal out with an eraser additive, or subtractive?
The answers are on the strip at the bottom.
Four things that earn marks.
First, warm up: line quality is judged at a glance, so fill half a page with confident strokes before you start.
Second, show the systems, not just the results — a page of hatching, stippling and cross-contour studies is direct evidence.
Blind contour and gesture pages belong in your process images — they show observation and practice.
Third, photograph your marks close up; a detail shot proves a skill that a full view only suggests.
Fourth, match marks to meaning in your written evidence: write one sentence that links a mark to your idea.
