Look at three famous pictures.
A wave from Japan.
A candle-lit room in England.
A vase of sunflowers in France.
Different countries, different centuries, different stories.
Yet every one of them is built from the same six elements of art.
Learn those six parts and you can read any picture, and make your own work much stronger.
Here is the plan.
First, line, the mark that leads your eye.
Then shape and form, flat or solid.
Then value, the light and the dark.
Then colour, and how colours sit together.
Then texture, how a surface feels.
And last, space, the depth inside a flat picture.
Six elements, and every artwork uses them.
A line is a moving point that the eye follows.
Every line has length and direction.
It also has quality.
A line can be thick or thin.
It can be smooth or rough, dark or light, solid or broken.
Change the quality and you change the feeling.
A contour line traces the outside edge of a form.
A gesture line is fast and loose, and it catches movement in a few seconds.
Now watch line do its work.
Hokusai draws the great wave with one bold curve, and claws of foam along the top.
Your eye rides that curve from left to right.
Then the artist stops you.
A tiny mountain sits quietly in the gap.
Below it, three boats bend under the water.
Nothing is written down, but the lines tell you exactly where to look.
A path like that is an implied line: not drawn at all, but suggested by a row of objects, or by where a person is looking.
Direction carries feeling, and this is easy marks.
A horizontal line lies down, so it feels calm and restful.
A vertical line stands up, so it feels strong and formal.
A diagonal line is falling or climbing, so it feels active and full of energy.
Artists use line for four jobs: to build shape, to shade value, to imply texture, and to lead the eye.
A shape is a flat, closed area.
It has height and width, and nothing more.
A form looks solid, because it also has depth.
Shapes come in two families.
Geometric shapes are regular and mechanical: circles, squares, triangles.
You meet them in buildings and machines.
Organic shapes are free and natural, with soft uneven edges, like leaves, clouds, or a puddle of water.
Here is the trick that fixes weak drawing.
The object itself is the positive shape.
The empty area around it and between its parts is the negative shape.
Beginners only look at the object.
Watch what happens when we look at the gaps instead.
The gaps are shapes too, and they have their own edges.
Draw the gaps correctly, and the object becomes correct by itself.
Value means how light or dark a tone is.
It is not colour.
A value scale runs in even steps from white, through the greys, down to black.
Value is your most powerful tool, because value is what turns a shape into a form.
One flat tone gives you a flat disc.
Four tones, placed correctly, give you a ball.
Light always does the same five things to a form.
The highlight is where the light hits square on.
The midtones are the true value of the object.
The core shadow is the darkest band, and it sits on the form, not at the edge.
Reflected light bounces up off the table into that edge.
And the cast shadow is the dark the object throws.
Strong light against deep dark is called chiaroscuro.
Joseph Wright hides a single candle in the middle of this room.
You never see the flame, but you see what it does.
The two children's faces glow, because they sit nearest the light.
The corners fall away into almost total darkness.
Big value contrast makes the focal point, and it makes the drama.
Colour has three properties.
Hue is its name, like red, blue, or green.
Value is how light or dark it is.
Saturation is how dull or how vivid it is.
The wheel puts every hue in order.
Red, yellow and blue are the primaries, and you cannot mix them from anything else.
Mix two primaries and you get a secondary.
Red and yellow give orange.
Blue and yellow give green.
Red and blue give violet.
Mix a primary with the secondary beside it and you get a tertiary.
Every colour scheme is just a shape drawn on the wheel.
Complementary colours sit straight across from each other.
Side by side they shout at each other.
Mixed together they neutralise into a dull grey-brown.
Analogous colours are neighbours, so they always agree.
Three colours evenly spaced give a triad: bold, but still balanced.
Van Gogh painted these sunflowers almost entirely in yellow and gold.
Those hues are neighbours on the wheel, so this is an analogous scheme, and the picture feels warm and unified.
Remember temperature too.
Warm colours seem to come forward.
Cool colours seem to move back.
Add white for a tint, and add black for a shade.
Texture is the surface quality of a work, and there are two kinds.
Actual, or tactile, texture you can really touch: thick paint — impasto — rough paper, glued-on cloth.
Look closely at this woven denim, and you can almost feel it.
Implied, or visual, texture only looks rough.
Dürer built these hands out of thousands of fine ink lines.
Nothing on that page is rough, but your eye is completely convinced.
Space is the area within, around, and between the parts of a picture.
A scene sits in three planes: foreground, middle ground, and background.
Distance changes what you see.
Far things go paler, cooler and softer, and they lose their detail first.
That is atmospheric perspective.
Overlapping does the same job more simply: put one shape in front of another and the eye reads depth at once.
And the format of the picture plane, with your cropping of it, decides how all that space is read.
Linear perspective is the other way to build depth.
Draw the horizon line at your own eye level.
Put one vanishing point on it.
Every edge that runs away from you goes to that point, so parallel lines seem to meet.
The front face stays a true square.
Choose the depth, and a flat page becomes a box.
Let's answer a real exam question.
Describe how line creates meaning in this portrait.
Weak answers just say the artist uses line.
That earns nothing at all.
A strong answer has three parts.
First, name the element: line.
Second, describe its quality: thick, jagged, diagonal lines in the background.
Third, and this is where the marks are, link it to a feeling.
Their restless direction makes the calm horizontal shoulders feel even more still.
Three marks students throw away.
First, name the element precisely.
Say line, shape, form, value, colour, texture or space.
Never just say it looks nice.
Second, keep shape and form apart: a shape is flat, a form has depth.
Third, never stop at naming.
Always say what the element does to the viewer.
Name it, describe it, then link it to an effect.
