Vocabulary
English Meaning
lipid bilayerTwo sheets of phospholipids, tails inward, forming the barrier of every cell membrane.
simple diffusion/ˈsɪmpl dɪˈfjuːʒn/Passive movement of small or lipid-soluble molecules down their gradient straight through the bilayer.
facilitated diffusion/fəˈsɪlɪteɪtɪd dɪˈfjuːʒn/Passive movement down a concentration or electrochemical gradient through a membrane channel or carrier protein.
primary active transportPumping a solute against its gradient using ATP directly, as the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase does.
secondary active transportMoving a solute uphill using the energy of another ion (usually Na⁺) flowing down its gradient.
Nernst equation/nɜːnst ɪˈkweɪʒn/An equation relating an electrode or cell potential to its standard potential, temperature and reaction quotient.
resting potential/ˈrestɪŋ pəˈtenʃl/The steady membrane voltage of an unstimulated cell, about −70 mV in neurons, set mainly by K⁺.
sodium-potassium pump/ˈsəʊdɪəm pəˈtæsɪəm pʌmp/sodium-potassium pump
cystic fibrosis/ˈsɪstɪk fɪˈbrəʊsɪs/An inherited condition caused by variants affecting the CFTR protein, leading to abnormal salt and water transport and thick mucus in organs such as the lungs.
