An opinion essay: position and support

  • Is working from home good for society? Supporters point to the hours saved on commuting and the freedom to live anywhere. Critics answer that homes make poor offices: collaboration suffers, and junior staff lose the chance to learn by watching others. The truth probably lies in the middle. Companies that offer both options tend to keep their staff longest — and choice, it turns out, is what people value most.
  • Outcome: distinguish a writer’s position from what the evidence establishes, then synthesise English sources without overstating them. Start with B1 reading and contrast linkers.
  • This and the next three extracts are fictional teaching samples, not real research or reporting. Their existing optional clips support reading; the written questions are not a listening assessment. The middle position is this writer’s judgement, not a rule that compromise must be true.
