Contrast linkers

Showing a meaningful contrast

- Contrast can show that an outcome differs from an expectation: Although it was raining, we went out. The two facts need not be literal opposites.
- Outcome: express a contrast with an appropriate clause frame and punctuation, while keeping the original facts and people clear.
- Start with clause order. Starting check: is the rain a full clause? It is a noun phrase; it was raining is a full clause.
Although the forecast promised sunshine, my umbrella knew better.
although / though / even though
- These commonly introduce a full clause: Although it was raining, we went out. Even though emphasizes the unexpected contrast.
- Reduced clauses are also possible, especially in formal writing: Although tired, Jo kept working. Jo is the person who was tired; an overt subject and verb are not compulsory in every use.
- Though can also work at the end as a comment: It’s expensive, though. This differs from the opening subordinate-clause frame.
Choose from the supplied options for this full-clause frame: “___ it was raining, we went out.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Although directly introduces the full clause it was raining in this option pair. Despite would need a noun/-ing construction or the added phrase the fact that. Although can also introduce reduced clauses in other examples.
Translate into English: 虽然在下雨,我们还是出门了。
Difficulty 3/5 · 200 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The reference uses although + full clause. Despite the rain and despite the fact that it was raining can preserve the same contrast; different grammatical frames are valid.
Which example directly uses a full clause after its contrast linker?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
We started late contains its own subject and finite verb after although. The other examples are also grammatical, but use a noun phrase or an -ing construction instead of that full-clause frame.
despite / in spite of
- Use a noun phrase or an -ing construction directly after these expressions: Despite the rain, we went out. In spite of being tired, Jo kept working.
- A full clause can follow the fact that: Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out. Direct despite it was raining does not fit this standard pattern.
- Check the understood subject: Despite being tired, Jo helped Sam says Jo was tired. If you mean Sam, write Although Sam was tired, Jo helped him instead.
Choose despite or although for this noun-phrase frame: “___ the rain, we went out.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Before a noun (“the rain”), use “despite” / “in spite of”.
Does this fit the standard concession pattern? “Despite it was raining, we went out.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Direct “despite it was raining” does not fit the standard pattern. Use “Despite the rain”, “Although it was raining”, or “Despite the fact that it was raining”. The last version legitimately contains a full clause after the fact that.
Which version introduces a full clause with despite the fact that?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The fact that supplies the bridge to the full clause it was noisy. Direct despite it was noisy lacks that frame; despite does not take an added of.
however / nevertheless
- These linking adverbs can begin a sentence: It was expensive. However, we bought it. A semicolon also works: It was expensive; however, we bought it.
- They can appear inside a clause: We did, however, buy it. They do not have to start a brand-new sentence.
- A comma alone does not normally join two independent clauses through however in standard writing. Use a full stop, a semicolon or another appropriate construction.
Which contrast pattern fits?
Recognise the contrast frames actually used here; these are examples, not exhaustive rules for every complement or adverb position.
Which version correctly joins two independent clauses using contrast however?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
A semicolon separates the two independent clauses; however marks contrast and is followed by a comma here. A full stop before However would also work; a comma alone does not supply the required clause boundary.
Repair structure and meaning
- For one direct concession, use Although it rained, we went out rather than mechanically pairing although … but …. This does not ban but elsewhere in a longer sentence.
- Use despite the rain or in spite of the rain, not despite of the rain.
- Near miss: Despite being cancelled, we attended the meeting describes us as cancelled. If the meeting was cancelled, write Although the meeting was cancelled, we went to the venue. Do not repair grammar by claiming an event actually took place when the source says it did not.
Match these supplied example frames: although it rained; despite the rain; It rained. However, we went out; I like it, though. The matches describe these examples, not every possible position or complement.
Difficulty 2/5 · 140 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The supplied frames illustrate full-clause although, noun-phrase despite, sentence-initial however and final though. Also possible: although tired; despite the fact that it rained; and “We did, however, go out”.
Which sentence is correct?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Among these options, despite the rain has the valid noun-phrase frame. For the full clause use although it was raining or despite the fact that it was raining; do not add of directly to despite.
“Despite being tired, Alba helped Tom” establishes that Tom was tired.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Alba is the subject of helped and the understood person who was tired. Tom may or may not have been tired; the sentence does not supply that fact. Expand the reduced phrase to check the person before rewriting it.
- Choose a frame for the information you have: full clause, reduced clause, noun phrase or -ing construction. Check who the description applies to.
- However can follow a full stop or semicolon or appear inside a clause; punctuation should preserve the clause boundaries.
- Later recall: take two new facts that contrast, express them in two different grammatical frames and explain one punctuation choice. Revisit the fresh tasks from memory, then use the proposal-writing unit to express a limitation without overstating evidence.
Write one English sentence that shows a contrast, using although or despite correctly. You may invent a practical situation; keep clear who each description applies to.
Difficulty 3/5 · 200 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Example: “Although the test was hard, I passed.”
A note says, “Although tired, Ravi stayed to help Lena.” Which interpretation preserves the understood subject of tired?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The reduced opening clause describes Ravi, the subject of stayed. It does not establish whether Lena was tired. Although can introduce a reduced clause when the relation is clear. If you assigned tired to Lena, expand it to although Ravi was tired, then try another reduced-clause message.
Facts for a short English note: the repair was expensive, but the group chose to pay for it; Jo was tired but stayed to help. Write two sentences or two clearly punctuated lines: use however for the cost decision and although or despite for Jo’s situation. Preserve who was tired. Compare and revise one subject-reference or punctuation issue.
Compare the intended meaning and the relevant clause/form choices. Revise one supported issue; this local self-review does not award correctness or proficiency.
Worked contrasts: preserve the frame and the facts
- Phrase versus clause: “Despite the noise, we heard the announcement” uses a noun phrase; “Although it was noisy, we heard the announcement” uses a full clause. “Despite the fact that it was noisy, we heard the announcement” is also grammatical. Removing only the fact that would break that supplied frame, not reveal a ban on every later full clause.
- Person before reduction: “Despite being late, Asha helped Tess” describes Asha as late. If Tess was late, use “Although Tess was late, Asha helped her” to keep the person clear. Boundary before position: “The price was high; however, we accepted the offer” separates two complete clauses. “We did, however, accept the offer” inserts the same linking adverb inside one clause; it does not require a new sentence.
Fresh decisions: keep structure and meaning together
- Work through nineteen new independent decisions alongside the earlier Ravi check. Identify full clauses, noun phrases and reduced descriptions before selecting a linker. A complete written although-concession needs an attached main clause; purposefully incomplete writing in another genre is a different task.
- Contrast need not join literal opposites or establish a cause. A linking expression does not prove a forecast, payment or emotion. Although it rained, we left, but Jo stayed gives but a separate coordination job; the issue is mechanically doubling the same direct concession, not banning that word from every longer sentence.
Supply the missing word in the complete expression: “In spite ___ the delay, we arrived before noon.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
In spite of is the three-word expression. Despite the delay is an alternative with no added of; do not combine the two frames as despite of.
Complete the bridge to this full clause: “Despite the ___ that the lift was broken, we reached the room.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Despite the fact that introduces the full clause the lift was broken. Despite the broken lift uses a noun phrase; deleting only the fact that would not preserve this supplied frame.
Use the -ing form of be: “Despite ___ nervous, Priya gave a clear introduction.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Being nervous fits the requested -ing construction. Priya is its understood subject and the person who gave the introduction; nervousness is not assigned to the audience.
Use the linker from this unit that can introduce a concession clause and can also stand at the end as a contrasting comment: “The room is small. It is comfortable, ___.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Final though adds a contrasting comment about comfort after small size. Although does not normally replace though in this final linking-adverb use; the exercise requests that specific word and position.
Which noun-phrase concession fits the supplied wording?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The shortage of chairs is a noun phrase that fits despite directly. A full-clause alternative is although there was a shortage of chairs. Do not repair a missing clause by adding of to despite.
Which complete sentence uses a full concession clause?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The bus was late has a subject and finite verb, so even though fits this full-clause frame. The third option leaves only a noun phrase; despite the late bus is a different grammatical construction.
What is accurate about “Although inexperienced, Leon led the briefing”?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The person who led the briefing is also the person described as inexperienced. A reduced clause can be grammatical when that relation is clear; the sentence does not describe the briefing or prove that the briefing went well.
In “In spite of feeling cold, Noor lent Sam a coat”, who is stated to feel cold?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The opening -ing construction shares Noor as its understood subject. Receiving a coat does not by itself state that Sam was cold. Keep the described person distinct from the recipient.
Which version places contrast however inside a single clause?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The clause is we did buy the cheaper lamp, with however inserted parenthetically after did. It does not need a new sentence merely because however appears; retain the underlying clause order and suitable punctuation.
Which repair preserves the two complete clauses in standard writing?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
A full stop separates two independent clauses before sentence-initial However. The comma-splice option still lacks that boundary; the Although fragment needs a main clause attached to it in this ordinary written task.
For an ordinary complete written sentence, which repair finishes “Although the handle was loose”?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The full subordinate although-clause needs its main clause in this task. The lid stayed shut supplies it. A purposeful fragment can occur in other genres, but it is not the requested complete written sentence.
Which comparison is accurate?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The noun-phrase and the fact that plus full-clause frames are both possible. Examine the whole expression rather than banning any later subject–verb clause or adding of to despite.
A speaker says “The walk is long. The view is worth it, though”. Which reading fits final though?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Final though can act as a contrasting comment, especially in speech. It differs from the opening subordinate-clause use of although/though, and does not assert a causal explanation for the length.
What does “Although the review was critical, the writer thanked the reviewer” express?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Concession relates the facts through an expectation, not necessarily through literal opposites or a proven cause. Both the critical review and the thanks are presented as facts in the message.
The lecture was cancelled, but Ava went to the venue to collect a folder. Which version keeps those facts?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The full clause assigns cancellation to the lecture and preserves the stated visit to collect a folder. Attending a cancelled lecture invents an event; the first reduced phrase also describes Ava as cancelled.
Which standard contrast pattern keeps clear clause boundaries?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Nevertheless is a linking adverb in this use. A semicolon or a full stop can separate the independent clauses. It does not directly introduce the noun phrase the full hall like despite would.
Because although … but … should not mechanically double the same direct concession, the word but is forbidden anywhere in every longer sentence containing although.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
A direct join such as although it rained, but we left is not the ordinary pattern being practised. But can still coordinate a different part of a longer sentence, for example Although it rained, we left, but Jo stayed. Check which clauses each word connects.
Putting however between a budget warning and a prediction guarantees that the predicted project will succeed.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
A contrast linker expresses a relation in the speaker’s message; it does not verify the prediction or remove uncertainty. Separate the wording of a forecast from evidence of what actually happens.
The expression in spite of by itself proves that the speaker feels hostility toward someone.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The expression can mark concession without any hostile feeling: in spite of the rain describes weather as an obstacle. Do not infer a specific emotion from the expression alone; context and delivery matter.
Transfer: report a decision without inventing an outcome
- Keep Noor as tired and Mina as the person who stayed; then report the club’s high estimate and approval without claiming payment or completion. Use a full clause when a reduced phrase would attach the description to the wrong person.
- Draft your repair-and-Jo note before opening the earlier model. Check the cost decision, Jo’s tiredness and each clause boundary. The existing examples illustrate possible patterns; they do not restrict every adverb to one position or every concession to one complement.
Noor was tired. Mina stayed to finish the labels. Which message keeps the stated people?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The full clause explicitly keeps Noor as tired and Mina as the person who stayed. The other choices change the tired person or the worker and add an unsupported finished total.
The estimate was high; the club approved the repair. No payment has been made. Which message preserves that evidence?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The message preserves cost and approval without converting a decision into payment or completion. A contrast is not a licence to invent the eventual outcome.
Later review: repair the message, not just its commas
- Tomorrow, complete the queue sentence and cabinet expression before looking back. Then write the committee-and-Nia update before opening its model. Check whether fixing punctuation left an unsupported claim about payment or finished work.
- Next: proposal writing, clause order or relative-clause scope. The study allowance is provisional across sessions; written checks and self-comparison do not certify proficiency.
Usage checked 21 October 2026: British Council, contrasting ideas, Cambridge, although or though and Cambridge, ways to link ideas. New examples/tasks are original local teaching. The diagram and classifier illustrate selected frames, with the alternatives qualified in the text. Independent specialist, language, answer, accessibility and learner review remains pending.
Later, choose the version with a complete concession and main clause.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Although introduces the full clause and we stayed supplies the main clause. Despite needs another complement frame, and the third choice mechanically doubles the same concession with but.
Later, complete the requested expression: “In spite ___ the narrow doorway, the cabinet fitted through.”
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
In spite of is the complete expression. Despite the narrow doorway would also fit the meaning with a different frame; do not add of directly after despite.
Later, write a short English update from these facts. The estimate was high, but the committee decided to approve the repair. No payment has been made and repair has not begun. Nia was tired, but she stayed to write the note. Use contrast however for the cost/decision and although or despite for Nia. Draft before showing the model; revise one real boundary, reference or factual mismatch.
Compare facts, participants and clause structure with the model and checklist. Faithful alternatives can work; self-comparison and revision do not establish independent correctness or proficiency.
