Transkrip
The B1 speaking test is ten to twelve minutes with a partner, in four parts. The interview, the photo description, the collaborative decision, and the discussion. The memory hook: a meal — the appetiser is the interview, the solo is the photo, the cooking together is the decision, and the discussion is the conversation over coffee. The A2 sandwich still applies throughout.
Part two is the photo minute, and the recipe is place, people, action, detail, guess. In this photo, there's a kitchen. A woman and a girl are cooking. The girl is mixing something in a bowl. They're both smiling; they look like they're having fun. The present continuous carries the action, and look like, seem, maybe and probably carry your guesses. The photo can't confirm; you speculate.
Pause and choose. A woman and a girl are cooking; the girl is mixing something, and they look happy. The recipe moves from scene to people to feeling. There is a table, there is a bowl is an inventory, not a description, and I like kitchens is about you, not the photo.
Part three is the decision: five or six options and a partner, and the decision must be mutual. Steamrolling scores worse than a friendly compromise. The machinery: suggest, how about the library; respond, good idea, but the gym; compare, the library is more useful than; and decide, so we agree on the library. OK, let's choose yours — yours makes sense. A friendly compromise beats a victory.
Pause and choose. I see what you mean, but the cooking club is tastier, and we could code the recipes. Yes yes yes shows no English, no wrong shows no manners, and silence is the only failure. The polite disagreement shows all of it.
The restart button: when stuck, ask what do you think about this one; the question machine restarts the conversation, and inviting your partner is itself marked, as interaction management. In part two, this is a picture of followed by silence is a lost minute; use the recipe. And in part four, yes I do is thin; yes, I cook at weekends, because it's relaxing and the results are edible is the sandwich, one level up.
Run a full practice round with a partner. The interview: what do you like doing after school, sandwich answers. The photo minute: any photo on your phone, place, people, action, detail, guess, sixty seconds. The decision: one club for the class, music, coding, cooking, basketball or drama; choose together, disagree politely; the drama club overhears everything. And the discussion: do you prefer learning in groups or alone — answer, detail, reason.
Pause for four checks. The photo recipe: place, people, action, detail, guess. Speculate with look like, seem, maybe and probably. Invite your partner; interaction management is marked. And disagree politely: I see what you mean, but. That closes B1 Preliminary, and with it the whole Cambridge pair — from the twenty-five-word message to the mutual decision. Go pass it.
