B1 Preliminary reading opens with the same two beasts as A2 Key, one level bigger: five notices, and five people matched to eight short texts. Everything from A2 still applies, but the paraphrase is deeper and the distractors are smarter. The memory hook: at A2 the trap repeats the words; at B1 the trap repeats the idea, wrongly. Read for meaning, or the trap wins. And budget: forty-five minutes for six parts, and parts one and two fund the rest.
Part one's options are now two-step paraphrases. The text says students must return books before the last week of term; the correct option says books cannot be kept until the holidays — the same fact in new clothes. The trap changes the scope words: may to must, some to all. Underline all, most, some, must, can and may in both the text and the options before choosing, and match the meaning, never the words.
Pause and choose. Weekday afternoons and weekends. The mornings belong to the schools, so every morning is a scope trap, and only at weekends forgets the weekday afternoons. The scope words decide; underline them.
Part two matches five people to eight texts. The method: write each person's needs as a checklist. Jia wants a two-day course, in the evening, for beginners, under two hundred yuan — four requirements, including the quiet ones like cheap and for beginners. The winning text ticks all four; the traps tick three. And two people never share a text: if two answers collide, one of them is wrong, so re-read both checklists.
Pause and choose. Re-read both checklists, because one of them is wrong. Two people never share a text; a collision is an error, not a friendship. The fix is always in the requirements you underlined too quickly.
The funding rule: parts one and two are the fast ones, about ten minutes together, and the long texts in parts three and four eat whatever time you leave them. Mark the answer sheet as you go; reading has no transfer time. And trust your one-sentence meaning: at B1 the correct answer may share zero content words with the text. Your eyes match words; your meaning matches answers.
Try it. The swimming pool notice: weekday mornings for school groups only, public swim from twelve, weekends for all from nine. The public can swim weekday afternoons and weekends. A is the scope trap, and C forgets the weekday afternoons. Underline the scope words; the trap lives there.
Pause for four checks. Zero shared content words is fine; the B1 paraphrase works on meaning. May changed to must is the scope trap. Three of four requirements is not the answer; checklists don't negotiate. And ten minutes for parts one and two, then move; the funding rule. Next topic: the long reads, detailed meaning and cohesion.
