Giving a short talk · Donner une courte conférence
An example keeps a short answer useful
- “I like the market” gives a point. “I like the market because I can try local food; last week I watched a cook make noodles” adds a reason and example.
- Develop ideas that answer the actual topic. More words do not help if the answer moves away from the question.
Plan a two-minute talk · Préparez une intervention de deux minutes
Angle, three points, an example each, a frame — a talk plans itself in one minute. · Angle, trois points, un exemple chacun, un cadre — une intervention s'organise en une minute.
In a short talk, you should… · Dans une courte intervention, vous devriez…
Develop your points, don't just list them. · Développez vos points, ne vous contentez pas de les lister.
Use a few clear cues
- Choose a manageable point, reason and example. For a practice talk on a place, you might describe one activity and explain why it matters to you.
- Follow the exam or classroom instructions about preparation, time and notes. Do not assume notes are allowed because they help during practice.
Use a phrase like 'for ___' to give an example. · Utilisez une expression comme 'pour ___' pour donner un exemple.
'For example' introduces an example. · 'Par exemple' introduit un exemple.
Write one full sentence describing your favourite food, with a reason. · Écrivez une phrase complète décrivant votre aliment préféré, avec une raison.
Example: 'My favourite food is noodles because they are warm and tasty.' · Exemple : 'Mon aliment préféré sont les nouilles parce qu'elles sont chaudes et délicieuses.'
Connect meaning rather than filling silence
- “For example” introduces an example; “that is why” links a conclusion to a reason. Use a phrase only when that relationship fits.
- A clear simple sentence can be better than a memorised phrase with no connection to the topic.
Speaking very fast is more important than speaking clearly. · Parler très vite est plus important que parler clairement.
No — clear is better than fast. · Non — clair vaut mieux que rapide.
Keep communication moving
- Speak at a pace that lets the listener follow. Use pronunciation and intonation to make meaning clear; speed alone is not fluency.
- If a word is missing, describe it: “the place where people buy vegetables”. Then return to the point rather than stopping the whole talk.
Put the talk-planning steps in order. · Mettez les étapes de préparation de l'intervention dans l'ordre.
Choose a relevant angle, organise points and examples, then frame the practice talk. This does not set official preparation time or guarantee confidence.
You forget “stall” while describing a market. Which move best keeps the meaning clear?
A short description preserves the meaning and lets you continue the relevant point.
Review a practice attempt
- Record a permitted practice talk, then check whether each point has support and answers the topic. Notice unclear references or repeated phrases.
- Prepare ideas and practise flexible wording. A fixed script can become difficult to adapt when the question changes.
