- During and after the American Revolution, an increased awareness of inequalities in society motivated some individuals and groups to call for the abolition of slavery and greater political democracy in the new state and national governments. Republican motherhood
- In response to women's participation in the American Revolution, Enlightenment ideas, and women's appeals for expanded roles, an ideal of "republican motherhood" gained popularity. It called on women to teach republican values within the family and granted women a new importance in American political culture.

- A new importance in American political culture is a real gain, and within the family is a real limit. The CED states both in one sentence and does not resolve the tension, so neither should an answer.
- A comparison should specify which participation, gain and restriction are similar, rather than assume an exact parallel.

A revolution that says all men are created equal has handed a sentence to everyone who is not treated as equal. Its authors do not control who picks the sentence up, at home or three thousand miles away.
