This frame covers 看起来 vs 看来. 看起来 tells you how something looks from what you can see or notice: a face, a room, the sky, a dish. 看来 gives your conclusion: "it seems", or "apparently". Both are normal in speaking and writing, and they share the same everyday register. In conversation, 看来 sounds like thinking aloud. It often starts the sentence., See the handout for full form and boundary.
This frame covers 显得 vs 看起来. 显得 means that someone or something comes across in a certain way. A cause is usually there: clothes, light, colour, or a change from before. The verb is normal in speaking and in description. It often goes with 更. A plain quality after 显得 is fine too. 看起来 can stand alone and simply report the look., See the handout for full form and boundary.
