Conjunctions join two ideas, and HSK four tests whether the join matches the relationship. This lesson covers the but family, buguo, keshi, danshi and er; the and-so chain, yushi; the another-thing set, haiyou, lingwai and zaishuo; and the tiny bridge that links a method to its purpose, yong or tongguo, something, lai, verb. For each join, learn the relationship it names, then the register it travels in.
Buguo is the gentlest but. The characters explain it, bu, not, plus guo, get past: a small snag you cannot quite step over. Zhe jian yifu wo hen xihuan, buguo youdian gui, I really like this outfit, but it's a bit pricey. The qualification is light, and the sentence stays positive. Keshi and danshi are the bread-and-butter buts: danshi a shade more formal and emphatic, keshi a touch softer, and otherwise they swap freely. Wo xihuan ta, keshi ta bu xihuan wo, I like him, but he doesn't like me.
Er links two related clauses with a contrast, and the efficient way to learn it is through its two workhorse frames. Frame one, bu shi A er shi B, not A but rather B. Frame two, shi A er bu shi B, A, not B. A worked sentence: houhui de ren bu shi ni, er shi wo ziji, the one who will regret it isn't you, it's me myself. Er on its own is elegant and semi-written, but inside these frames it is common in speech too, so master the frames and most uses of er click into place. And remember the pairing rule for the family: Chinese happily keeps suiran and danshi in the same sentence, suiran, dot, dot, dot, danshi, dot, dot, dot, where English would use only one of although and but.
Pause and choose. The gentle compliment-plus-snag wants buguo: zhe jia jiudian ting hao de, buguo youdianr yuan, this hotel is pretty nice, but it's a bit far. Er shi belongs to the bu-shi-A frames, yushi narrates a past consequence, and lingwai adds a separate point rather than a snag. Buguo is exactly the register of a review that still recommends the place.
Yushi chains a cause to the action it triggered. Zuotian turan xiayu le, yushi women quxiao le yecan, it suddenly rained yesterday, so we cancelled the picnic. Notice the tense of the word: it is a storytelling, past-tense connector, pairing with le, and often with jiu, narrating x happened, whereupon y followed. The boundary matters: for a timeless, logical cause and effect, because x therefore y, use suoyi or yinci instead. Yushi belongs to completed events; it does not narrate next week's plan.
Three words add more, and each does a different job. Haiyou is the casual afterthought, opening a fresh sentence after a full stop, like order-a-coffee energy: ni yao chiyao, dian, haiyou, yao duo xiuxi, you need to take medicine, dot, also, get plenty of rest. Lingwai brings in a separate additional point, a notch more formal, and the added clause usually carries hai or ye to echo it: wo mei shijian canjia, dian, lingwai, wo ye bu tai ganxingqu, I don't have time to join, dot, besides, I'm not really interested. Zaishuo piles on a clinching reason behind a decision: tai yuan le, zaishuo wo ye mei shijian, it's too far, besides, I've no time anyway. It reinforces a decision, and don't confuse it with the zaishuo inside xian, dot, dot, dot, zaishuo, do x first and deal with it later.
Turn down an invite with two layers. First reason: wo na tian yao kaoshi, I have an exam that day. Then the clincher with zaishuo: nage dianying wo zao jiu kan guo le, besides, I saw that film ages ago. Two reasons refuse more politely than one, and zaishuo is the word that makes the second one feel like backing rather than nagging. If you had used haiyou, it would read as a random afterthought, and lingwai as a separate administrative point. The clincher belongs to decisions.
The lai in this pattern is a tiny bridge from a method to its purpose. Hen duo nianqingren yong shouji A P P lai dian waimai, lots of young people use phone apps to order takeaway. Women yinggai xiang banfa lai jiejue zhege wenti, we should find a way to solve this problem. The structure is yong or tongguo, plus the method, plus lai, plus the goal. The first half is the how, and the lai half is the why. This lai means in order to, not come, and although it is optional, keeping it makes the so-as-to link explicit and natural.
Here is the whole topic as one revision card. Buguo, light contrast, the gentlest but. Keshi and danshi, plain contrast, with danshi pairing alongside suiran. Yushi, consequence inside a past story, with le. Suoyi and yinci, timeless cause and effect. Haiyou, lingwai and zaishuo, the afterthought, the separate point, and the clinching reason. And yong x lai verb, the bridge from means to goal. When you write or speak, name the relationship first, then pick the word that carries exactly that relationship, and the register takes care of itself.
Pause and check both. First, yes: Chinese happily keeps suiran and danshi in one sentence, the matching pair where English uses only although or but, never both. Second, lai here means in order to, the bridge from the method, using the phone, to the goal, ordering takeaway. The review's remaining questions: buguo is the gentlest but; yushi sentences stay in the past with le, like yushi women zhihao zuo daba le, so we had to take the coach; and the decision-clinching addition word is zaishuo. Take the revision card into your next practice paragraph.
