The requirement is broad
- Writers must acknowledge words, ideas, images, texts and other intellectual property of others through attribution, citation or reference.
- Note the list: not only quoted words, but ideas and images too.
- So an interpretation you got from a lesson or a friend is covered by the same rule.
Borrowing someone’s idea without naming them is not a clever disguise; it is still their idea.

What the exam expects
- The CED adds a note: students are not expected to use a specific attribution style (like MLA) within the timed essays on the AP Exam.
- So no bibliography, no page numbers, no format to memorise.
- Naming the work and its author in your own sentence is all a timed essay needs.

But class papers are different
- The same note says students should follow such guidelines for any extended papers they develop in class through multiple revisions.
- So the exemption is for timed writing only, and it is about format, not about the duty itself.
- The duty to acknowledge never lapses; only the style requirement does.

The exam's exemption is about style, not about the duty. Students are not expected to use MLA in a timed essay — but the requirement to acknowledge words, ideas, images and texts does not lapse, and it covers an interpretation you took from a lesson as much as a sentence you quoted.

Acknowledging strengthens an argument
- Naming where an idea came from is not an admission of weakness.
- It tells the reader you know the conversation your reading is entering — which is the same move as discussing alternative interpretations.
- A common reading holds that… ; the poem's third stanza makes that hard to sustain does both jobs at once.

An acknowledgement check
- Is every quotation attributed to the text it came from?
- Is any idea here one I took from a lesson, a critic or a classmate? If so, say so in a clause.
- For a class paper, does the citation follow the style my teacher set?

In a timed essay: A familiar reading takes the tide as consolation. The poem's last stanza, where the water leaves nothing behind, makes that hard to keep. The idea is acknowledged in five words, no format is used, and the acknowledgement has doubled as an alternative-interpretation move.
