A poem is short enough to claim whole
- A thesis still expresses an interpretation requiring defense through evidence and a line of reasoning.
- Unlike a novel, a poem is short enough that a thesis can be about all of it.
- So the size problem reverses: here the danger is a thesis too narrow to fill an essay.
A thesis about a whole poem should still fit the poem; twelve lines need not carry a novel in a backpack.

- The strongest poetry theses usually name a tension: something the poem wants and something it cannot have.

Tension: The speaker's clearest memories are of a house she has never entered, so the poem's tenderness is directed at something she is not entitled to miss. The second gives every paragraph its job before the essay starts.

A poem is short enough for a whole-poem thesis — here the danger is being too narrow, not too wide. Do not list devices: the CED does not require it and it produces essays about techniques. Name a tension, which previews the reasoning for free, and apply the deletion test.
