Writing a Literary Thesis ·
A thesis is an interpretation, defended
- A thesis statement expresses an interpretation of a literary text and requires a defense through use of textual evidence and a line of reasoning.
- Both are named, and both are explained in an essay through commentary.
- So a thesis creates three obligations at once: evidence, reasoning, and the commentary that connects them.
A thesis without evidence is a confident book review written before the book was opened.
Select all · 所有 the things a thesis requires for its defense.
The CED names exactly those three obligations. · CED
Interpretation, not observation
- An interpretation says what the text means or does, not what it contains.
- The novel has two narrators is observation; the second narrator exists to make the first unreliable is interpretation.
- The test is the same as for a claim: could a careful reader disagree?
An interpretation says what the text... ·
The novel has two narrators is observation; what the second one is for is interpretation. ·
A thesis may preview the line of reasoning
- A thesis statement may preview the development or line of reasoning of an interpretation.
- May — the CED is explicit that this is optional.
- A thesis that previews tells the reader the shape of what follows, which is usually worth doing.
Write a literary thesis in four moves ·
A thesis about what the text does gives every later paragraph something to prove. ·
A thesis ____ preview the line of reasoning — the CED makes it optional.
Previewing tells the reader the shape of what follows, which is usually worth doing. ·
A thesis does not have to list its points. The CED says this explicitly, and the taught "through imagery, structure and diction" formula often makes the essay worse — three unrelated paragraphs bolted together. What a thesis must do is state a defensible interpretation; previewing the reasoning is optional.
A thesis statement must list the literary elements the essay will analyse. ·
The CED says outright that it need not list points, elements or specific evidence. · CED
But it need not be a list
- The CED says outright: this is not to say that a thesis must list the points of an interpretation, literary elements to be analyzed, or specific evidence.
- So the taught three-part formula — through imagery, structure and diction — is permitted, never required.
- A listed thesis often forces an essay into three unrelated paragraphs, which is worse than none.
Match each check to the fault it catches. ·
Three checks, and an essay that fails any of them will not recover later. ·
A thesis check
- Does it say what the text means or does, rather than what it contains?
- Could a careful reader disagree with it?
- Can I state, in one further sentence, the sequence of claims that will defend it?
Listed: Through imagery, structure and diction, the novel explores memory. Defensible: The novel gives its most reliable memories to the character least able to act on them, so remembering becomes a form of paralysis rather than of understanding. The second can be argued with — and therefore defended.
A thesis expresses an interpretation and requires defense through textual evidence and a line of reasoning, both explained through commentary. It says what the text means or does. It may preview the line of reasoning, but the CED states it need not list points, elements or evidence.
