A semicolon makes a claim

  • A full stop says: two separate statements.
  • A semicolon says: these belong together, and neither outranks the other.
  • The facts are identical. The punctuation asserted a relationship between them.

A semicolon introduces two sentences as equals; it is not a decorative comma wearing a tie.
