Controlling Tone in Your Own Writing ·
A tone you did not choose is still a tone
- Readers infer an attitude whether or not you meant to convey one.
- So the choice is not whether to have a tone but whether to control it.
- Uncontrolled tone usually reads as either indifference or irritation.
An accidental tone is like an accidental hat: readers still see you wearing it.
You can write an essay with no tone at all.
Readers infer an attitude regardless; the choice is whether to control · 控制 it.
Choosing a tone for the audience
- A tone that fits the audience does part of the persuading before any argument arrives.
- For a sceptical reader, measured beats emphatic — emphasis reads as compensation.
- For an audience that already agrees, measured also beats emphatic, because they do not need convincing.
Shifting deliberately
- Shift tone where the argument turns — into a concession, out of one, from general to concrete.
- A shift at an argument turn reads as control.
- A shift with no turn behind it reads as inconsistency.
Shift tone only where the ____ turns. ·
A shift with no turn behind it reads as inconsistency, not control. ·
Sarcasm depends on the reader already agreeing with you. On an exam essay the reader is a stranger, so a sarcastic tone risks reading as contempt for a position they may hold — and contempt is the fastest way to lose an audience you were meant to persuade.
Would this tone work on an exam reader? ·
Sort each choice by what it risks. ·
Sarcasm is high-risk in an exam essay because it...
The reader is a stranger, so sarcasm can read as contempt for a position they hold. ·
Select all · 所有 the tones this lesson advises avoiding in an exam essay.
Measured is the tone the lesson recommends. ·
Tones to avoid in an exam essay
- Sarcasm is high-risk: it depends on the reader sharing your view already.
- Outrage spends credibility you may need later, and rarely persuades a reader who does not share it.
- Detachment so complete that nothing seems to matter reads as having no position.
Match each check question to what it catches. ·
Each question catches a different way tone escapes a writer's control. ·
A tone check
- Read your essay aloud in your head and name the attitude a stranger would hear.
- Is it the attitude you meant? Is it one this audience would accept from a stranger?
- Every place the answer is no, a word choice is doing something you did not authorise.
Two sentences make the same point. "Anyone can see this is absurd" dismisses a reader who cannot. "The proposal assumes something its own evidence contradicts" makes the same objection and leaves the reader room to arrive there.
You have a tone whether you choose one or not. Choose measured over emphatic for both sceptical and agreeing audiences, shift only where the argument turns, and avoid sarcasm, outrage and total detachment. Check by naming the attitude a stranger would hear.
