Britain wins the war, takes half a continent, and destroys its main rival in North America.
Twelve years later its colonies are in open rebellion.
Those two facts are not a coincidence and they are not irony.
They come from the same victory, and this period is the chain that connects them.
The Seven Years' War and its consequences start the period.
Learn the chain: war, then debt and new territory, then taxes and the Proclamation of 1763, then colonial resistance, then independence.
Britain took a major expansion of territory out of that war and an enormous war debt with it.
Learn this as a chain and the period answers itself.
The war expanded British territory by defeating the French — but at tremendous expense.
That debt set the stage for imperial efforts to raise revenue and consolidate control.
At the same time, imperial officials tried to prevent colonists from moving westward, and that generated opposition of its own, while native groups sought to keep trading and to resist encroachment.
Then came taxes without direct colonial representation or consent.
And that began to unite the colonists against constraints on their economic activities and political rights.
War, debt, restriction, taxation, resistance.
New British efforts to collect taxes without the consent of colonial assemblies provoked organised resistance.
The slogan of the period is no taxation without representation.
Resistance was not only argument.
Men and women both took part: boycotts of British goods, home manufacture, and crowd action.
Committees of correspondence kept the colonies talking.
Leaders such as Benjamin Franklin energised the movement.
In some regions there was British military occupation.
The ideas behind the Revolution came from the Enlightenment: they led American political thinkers to emphasise individual talent over hereditary privilege, and to assert the natural rights and the sovereignty of the people.
Colonial leaders based their calls for resistance on four grounds: the rights of British subjects, the rights of the individual, local traditions of self-rule, and the ideas of the Enlightenment.
But do not stop at Enlightenment ideas — the exam wants the two named ones.
Republicanism: a government answerable to the people rather than to a monarch.
And natural rights: rights people hold before any government exists, which makes government conditional on protecting them.
Both found expression in Common Sense and the Declaration of Independence, and the CED says the ideas in those documents resonated throughout American history.
The war for independence succeeded through colonial resolve, difficult terrain, and crucially foreign assistance, above all from France.
Those are the war's wider effects, and they ran further than its leaders intended.
The Revolution's ideals inspired movements to abolish slavery, especially in the North, and gradual emancipation laws.
They raised questions about the status of women, expressed as republican motherhood: women shaped the republic by raising virtuous citizens.
They influenced later revolutions elsewhere in the Atlantic world.
At the same time the expansion of slavery into the deep South and adjacent western lands continued, beside rising antislavery sentiment — a contradiction the course returns to again and again.
The Articles of Confederation unified the newly independent states and created a central government with limited power — limited by design, not by accident, and it did produce the Northwest Ordinance.
But five difficulties followed: international trade, finances, interstate commerce, foreign relations and internal unrest.
Argue the Constitution from those named weaknesses rather than from a general sense of failure.
Delegates then proposed a constitution through negotiation, collaboration and compromise, including over the representation of slave states and the federal role in regulating slavery, allowing prohibition of the international slave trade only after 1808.
And the Federalists secured ratification by promising the Bill of Rights.
After independence, leaders wrote new constitutions and declarations of rights that generally limited executive power.
The Articles of Confederation created a deliberately weak centre: no power to tax, no power to regulate commerce, no executive, and no national judiciary.
It did organise western settlement through the Northwest Ordinance.
The Constitutional Convention then built a stronger government on compromise, including the Great Compromise over representation.
Ratification was contested.
Federalists argued the new government was strong enough to govern yet checked enough to be safe.
Anti-Federalists feared centralised power and demanded protection for individual liberties, which produced the Bill of Rights.
Under George Washington and John Adams, political leaders disagreed sharply over the relationship between the national and state governments.
A written constitution still needed practices before it could operate.
Under Washington and Adams, political leaders created institutions and precedents that put the Constitution's principles into practice.
They divided over four issues: the relationship between the national government and the states, economic policy, foreign policy, and the balance between liberty and order.
Out of that came the Federalists under Hamilton and the Democratic-Republicans under Jefferson and Madison — parties formed from disagreement, not before it.
Washington's Farewell Address then warned against political factions and against permanent foreign alliances, and the first of those warnings was already too late.
War between France and Britain after the French Revolution forced hard choices on the new government.
It pursued diplomatic initiatives to deal with the continued British and Spanish presence in North America.
Meanwhile a distinctive national culture developed in art, literature, and architecture, alongside continued regional variation.
The first party system was not only about Hamilton versus Jefferson.
It was also about which side of that European war the republic would take.
American Indian groups repeatedly evaluated and adjusted their alliances with European powers and the new United States as circumstances changed.
Growing numbers of migrants moved west, intensifying competition over resources, boundaries, and trade.
The relationship between the federal government and American Indian tribes remained ambiguous, contributing to recurring conflict.
In the Southwest, the Spanish expanded their mission system, supported by the bonded labour of local American Indians.
Finally, the question this period is nearly always asked as.
What changed: independence, a written constitution, republican government replacing monarchy, and the ideal of republican motherhood giving women a new place in political culture.
What stayed: many new state constitutions kept property qualifications for voting and citizenship, slavery expanded in the deep South and the western lands, and pressure on American Indian lands continued and intensified.
Give one of each.
An answer that lists only changes has answered half the question — and on a revolution, that is the easiest half to write.
The 2025 exam asked students to briefly describe one effect of the Seven Years' War from 1754 to 1765.
A full-mark answer names one effect and shows the causal link: Britain emerged from the war with a large debt, which led Parliament to impose new taxes such as the Stamp Act.
Britain won the war is a result, not an effect on what followed.
And the colonies were angry is too vague to credit.
Five things to take with you.
One: war, debt, restriction, taxation, resistance — the chain is the answer.
Two: name republicanism and natural rights, not just Enlightenment ideas.
Three: argue from the specific weakness the Constitution fixed.
Four: the Bill of Rights was the price of ratification.
Five: give one continuity beside every change.
