Link a person to an identity
- In this pattern, person + to be / is是 + identity: I / me我to be / is是student学生. to be / is是 shì links the person with a noun such as student or teacher.
- English uses “a student”; Chinese can simply say student学生 here. I / me我to be / is是一个student学生 is also grammatical, but you do not need 一个 for this introduction.
我是学生 can mean “I am a student” without 一个.
Chinese does not require an indefinite article in this identity pattern.

Listen for not不
- Listen and decide: teacher or not a teacher?
- not不 sounds rising before the fourth-tone to be / is是: bú shì. You may see the dictionary spelling bù; the written character is unchanged.
Do not use to be / is是 as a direct replacement for every English “is”. For “she is busy”, the ordinary pattern is she / her她degree / adjective linker很busy忙, taught later. This lesson covers identity statements, not every use of to be / is是.

I / me我to be / is是student学生 states an identity. I / me我no不是teacher老师 denies one. Keep not不 immediately before to be / is是 in this pattern.
