In one decade a country doubles its territory.
That sounds like a triumph and it brings one question with it: will slavery go there?
Every compromise from then on is an attempt to answer that question for a particular piece of land, and that is exactly why it cannot be settled once.
The next acquisition reopens it on new ground.
Three motives drove westward migration: access to natural and mineral resources, the hope of economic opportunity, and religious refuge.
Advocates of annexation argued that Manifest Destiny and the superiority of American institutions compelled expansion to the Pacific — and the College Board adds, in the same sentence, that this frequently provoked competition and violent conflict.
Victory in the Mexican-American War and diplomatic negotiations then added large territories, raising questions about the status of slavery, of American Indians, and of Mexicans in the newly acquired lands.
Later, wartime legislation such as the Homestead Act boosted migration further.
Expansion also meant conflict.
The government's interaction with Mexican Americans and American Indians produced dispossession, resistance, and new legal disputes over land and citizenship.
The land filled because someone was already there, and the exam wants that named.
One question runs under all of it: would slavery expand into the new territories?
Diverging responses to that question are what the mechanisms explain.
Now the rule that decides marks on this period: name the mechanism, not the mood.
Tensions rose earns nothing.
The courts and national leaders made a variety of attempts to resolve slavery in the territories, including the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Dred Scott decision — and these ultimately failed to reduce conflict.
Then the Second Party System ended, as slavery and anti-immigrant nativism weakened party loyalties and fostered sectional parties, most notably the Republican Party in the North.
That is the decisive change, because nothing in the party system now required anyone to compromise.
A national party needs votes in both sections.
A sectional party does not.
Bleeding Kansas followed, and then the election of 1860.
Abraham Lincoln won it without a single Southern state, and seven states responded by seceding.
The Compromise of 1850 admitted California as free and included a strict Fugitive Slave Act, which enraged the North by requiring its citizens to participate in enforcement.
Popular sovereignty — letting territorial settlers decide — produced violence in Kansas rather than a settlement.
The Dred Scott decision held that Congress could not ban slavery in the territories, removing compromise as a legal option.
Each collapse left less room for the next.
The Union's greater manpower and industrial resources decided the war's length, not its beginning.
Lincoln and most Union supporters began the war to preserve the Union — the CED is explicit that emancipation was not the initial aim.
The Emancipation Proclamation then did two things: it reframed the purpose of the war, and it helped prevent the Confederacy from gaining full diplomatic support from European powers, because supporting the Confederacy now meant supporting slavery.
Many African Americans fled southern plantations and enlisted in the Union Army, helping to undermine the Confederacy.
And the Union succeeded for four reasons together: improvements in leadership and strategy, key victories, greater resources, and the wartime destruction of the South's infrastructure.
Learn the three Reconstruction amendments by what each one does, because questions turn on the difference.
The 13th abolished slavery.
The 14th granted citizenship and equal protection under the laws.
The 15th granted voting rights.
Reconstruction also opened political opportunities and leadership roles to formerly enslaved persons.
And hold on to one more fact: the 14th and 15th eventually became the basis for court decisions upholding civil rights in the twentieth century.
The text survived its own defeat.
The 14th and 15th Amendments extended rights on the basis of race while introducing the word male into the Constitution.
The women's rights movement was both emboldened and divided by those two facts at once.
Hold both.
An answer that treats the amendments as a simple gain for everyone has missed the split.
Radical and moderate Republicans disagreed about how far to go, and that disagreement is half the story.
Reconstruction failed, and the exam wants the mechanisms.
Southern plantation owners continued to own the majority of the region's land even after Reconstruction.
Formerly enslaved persons sought land ownership but generally fell short of self-sufficiency, because an exploitative and soil-intensive sharecropping system limited access to land for black and poor white farmers alike.
Then segregation, violence, Supreme Court decisions and local political tactics progressively stripped away African American rights.
And the CED gives two causes for the failure, one in each section: determined Southern resistance, and the North's waning resolve.
One sentence carries the whole period, and it is worth memorising.
The Union victory and the contested reconstruction of the South settled the issues of slavery and secession, but left unresolved many questions about the power of the federal government and citizenship rights.
Two questions closed, two left open — and the two left open are exactly what the periods that follow keep returning to.
The period's reasoning skill is comparison.
The 2023 exam set the long essay: evaluate the extent to which the definitions of United States citizenship changed from 1865 to 1920.
A strong thesis takes a position and acknowledges the reversal.
The 14th and 15th Amendments established birthright citizenship and prohibited racial barriers to voting; however, segregation, violence and Supreme Court decisions made those definitions far less meaningful in practice.
Writing only about the amendments describes half the period.
Hold the legal change and the practical reversal together.
Five things to take with you.
One: expansion is the cause of the sectional crisis, not its background.
Two: name the mechanism, not the mood — the acts, the decisions, the parties.
Three: the war began to preserve the Union, and the Proclamation reframed it.
Four: learn the amendments by what each does.
Five: four mechanisms of failure — sharecropping, segregation, violence and Court decisions.
