Unit 7 is the last short-fiction unit, and it sharpens two things: how change happens in a character, and pacing as a deliberate manipulation of time.
Take change first, and take it as two independent questions — where the change comes from, and how fast it arrives.
Those two axes are independent, which is exactly what makes them useful.
A change caused by a conflict of values can arrive gradually or in an instant.
Characters who change or remain unchanged, first.
Often the change in a character emerges directly from a conflict of values represented in the narrative — that is the first source.
And changes in a character's circumstances may lead to changes in that character — that is the second.
Then the speed.
Characters can change gradually, but they can also change suddenly, and an epiphany may affect the plot by causing a character to act on a sudden realisation.
Note the verb.
An epiphany is only examinable when the character acts on it.
A realisation that changes nothing has not affected the plot, and a change with no source is assertion while a change with no consequence in the plot is decoration.
You need both ends.
That covers the nuances in characters' relationships too.
A group or force can function as a character.
Readers should examine how a character interacts with other characters, and the relationship between a character and a group — including their inclusion in or exclusion from it — is significant.
Take the group-as-character idea literally.
A town, a family, an institution can hold values, exert pressure and oppose a protagonist exactly as an individual antagonist would.
Reading it that way often unlocks a story with no obvious opponent, which is a common shape in short fiction and a common place for students to get stuck.
When a setting changes, it may suggest other movements, changes or shifts in the narrative — so a journey is rarely only a journey.
And settings may be contrasted to establish a conflict of values or ideas associated with them.
Two settings placed against each other are rarely just two places; they usually carry the competing value systems the plot is testing.
Then two more precise claims.
The way characters interact with their surroundings provides insights about them.
And the way characters behave in, or describe, their surroundings reveals an attitude toward those surroundings — which is character evidence obtained without speculating about anyone's psychology.
Pacing is the manipulation of time in a text, and several factors contribute to it — the length given to an event, the compression of long periods, the interruption of chronology.
And narrative pacing may evoke an emotional reaction in readers by the order in which information is revealed.
Here is why this is one of the most usable tools in the course: pacing is measurable.
Count the pages a text gives to an afternoon and to the following decade, and the disproportion is a claim about what mattered.
You do not need to interpret anything to find it — you need to count — and then the interpretation is about why that distribution was chosen.
Two more pieces.
A setting may become symbolic when it is associated with abstractions — emotions, ideas, times of life — and over time some settings have developed associations so strong that they almost universally symbolise something, which is the same warning Unit 6 gave about conventional symbols.
And a motif is a unified pattern of recurring objects or images used to emphasise a significant idea.
A motif differs from a symbol in that it need not stand for one thing.
It accumulates: each recurrence adds to what the pattern means.
Which is why noting the first and last appearance is usually more productive than listing them all — the distance between those two is the motif's development, and development is what you can write about.
Three CED points now, and they share one move.
First, how a narrator's reliability affects a narrative.
Some narrators or speakers may provide details and information that others do not or cannot provide — so when a text offers you two narrators, the sharpest evidence available is the comparison: what one can say and the other cannot.
Second, the simile.
The function of a simile relies on the selection of the objects being compared as well as the traits transferred.
Both halves are choices.
Name the ground, because a vehicle carries many possible likenesses and only one of them was meant.
Third, personification runs in reverse here too: assigning the qualities of a nonhuman object, entity, or idea to a person or character.
Watch for it, because it is almost always a judgement.
A character described in the vocabulary of machinery has been characterised, and by someone.
Now the writing, which Unit 7 states as one combined skill: developing a literary thesis, commentary, and evidence.
A thesis statement expresses an interpretation of a literary text and requires defence through textual evidence.
It may preview the development or line of reasoning of that interpretation, but it is not required to list the reasons — so do not spend words building a roadmap the rubric never asked for.
The word doing the work is interpretation.
A thesis that states what happens in the text is not a thesis; it is a summary, and a summary cannot be defended because nobody would disagree with it.
Compare two.
"The story uses a lot of imagery of the sea" — that is a summary.
Now the stronger one.
"The sea returns three times, and each time the speaker is further from shore."
A reader could disagree with that, which is exactly why it can be defended.
A line of reasoning is the logical sequence of claims that together defend the overarching thesis, and it is communicated through commentary.
Picture the claims hanging from the thesis, with a quotation under each one — and commentary is the weld.
It is the sentence explaining the logical relationship between that evidence and that claim.
Leave it out and you have a quotation and an assertion sitting side by side, with the reader asked to do the joining.
And textual evidence may require revision to an interpretation, if the evidence does not in fact support it.
The rubric uses four words about evidence, and each one rules something out.
Evidence is used strategically: to illustrate, clarify, exemplify, associate or amplify — it was chosen to do a job, not because it was the first quotable line you met.
It is effective when the commentary explains its logical relationship to the claim, because quoting is not explaining.
It is sufficient when its quantity and quality provide apt support, so one striking word cannot carry a paragraph and eight quotations cannot replace a reason.
And developing an interpretation is developed recursively: an interpretation can emerge, and change, as you read and write, so if your reading changes while you draft, revise the thesis to match it.
Notice what all four share. Every one is about the join between the quotation and the claim.
One point on the rubric is different from the others, and almost nobody goes for it.
More sophisticated literary arguments explain the significance or relevance of an interpretation.
Read that carefully: the rubric is not asking for a defensible reading, which is what the other five marks already reward.
It is asking why the reading is worth having at all — what the text turns out to be doing that a reader would otherwise walk past.
One sentence at the end of an essay can earn it.
It is one mark of six, and it is the one nobody attempts.
Five things to carry out.
First, a change needs a source and a consequence in the plot.
Second, an epiphany is examinable when the character acts on it.
Third, a group can function as a character — try it on any story with no obvious antagonist.
Fourth, two contrasted settings usually carry the competing values the plot is testing.
Fifth, pacing is measurable, and for a motif compare the first and last appearance rather than listing every one.
