Look at this pond.
Claude Monet painted it again, and again, and again — about two hundred and fifty pictures of the same water, over thirty years.
He was not repeating himself; he was following one question: how does light sit on water?
<slow>That is what the AP portfolio asks of you.</slow> Not fifteen pretty pictures.
One question, followed a long way.
This is Big Idea Two: Make.
We will look at what a sustained investigation is, at the three actions that drive it, then synthesis, two-D skills and craft, and how ideas develop across the works.
Then we write one piece of evidence together.
So what is a sustained investigation?
It is one body of work guided by questions or inquiry — it explores one question, in depth, over time.
Look at the left: five separate pictures with nothing in common.
Good work, maybe, but one-offs.
On the right, fifteen works that all come from the same question.
Only the right side is an investigation, and that connection has a name: coherence.
Everything you make must serve the same question.
An investigation moves forward through three actions.
Practice is repeated work that builds skill.
Experimentation tries new materials and processes, to find what is possible.
Revision changes a work after you reflect, or after feedback.
Then round again.
Look at the dots along the bottom: each time round, the body of work grows stronger.
All three must show across the works.
This is what practice looks like.
A master's study sheet, in red chalk.
The big figure is the main study — but look around the edges.
A hand, tried again.
An arm, tried again.
A head, turned another way.
Practice is the repeated work that trains your eye and your hand, and it is the reason the later works look easy.
Experimentation means trying a new material, or a new process.
One question, asked three ways.
Cut into a metal plate and printed: thin, hard, exact lines.
Now made with a camera.
No marks at all — only light, and one chosen moment in a crowd.
Same question, but the process changes the answer.
And now painted in thick oil, where colour itself does the work.
Readers want to see that you tried things, not that you played safe.
The third action is revision.
Revision is not starting again; it is changing a work you already made, for a reason.
Here is the first version — one flat colour.
Then you look at it, or a teacher looks at it, and you can name the problem: it feels dead.
So you change one thing: the same shape, now built from thin layers, so the colour glows.
And keep both.
The pair is the evidence — one picture alone proves nothing.
Now, synthesis.
Three things go into every work: the material, the process, and the idea.
Synthesis means they are integrated, so the whole says more than the parts.
Choose chalk because it is soft and can be rubbed away; choose ink because it is hard and cannot.
Then let the process serve both.
When it works, a viewer reads one message, not three separate parts — and the scoring looks at exactly that: not the parts, but how they hold together.
Two-D skills means using the elements and the principles well on a flat surface.
Van Gogh.
Look at the line: short curved strokes all running one way, so the whole sky moves.
Cool blue against one hot yellow.
None of it is luck.
And your skills must show range.
Here the skill is value: one hidden light in the middle of the room, so faces come out of the dark.
Five works go into Selected Works, and that is where skills are judged most directly.
Composition is how you arrange the picture plane, and the exam can see it.
Hokusai.
The wave rises on the left, its claws curl over, and your eye is carried down and right, to the small boats.
Nothing is accidental.
Craftsmanship is the skilful, controlled handling of materials.
Craft is the quality of the making.
This artist finished the face completely, then left the coat as a few light lines.
That is control: he chose where to stop.
Craft can be rough when the idea needs it, but it must look decided.
Now put the whole thing on one line.
Works one to five: explore.
Try many ideas, materials and marks.
Works six to ten: experiment and revise.
Test what works, and change in response.
Works eleven to fifteen: synthesise.
Bring the best together; the ideas run deeper.
Watch the curve rise.
<slow>That rise is what the readers are scoring</slow> — not the last picture, the climb.
Here is the part students get wrong.
Not every experiment works.
Say work number four failed: the colour went muddy.
The instinct is to hide it and show only the good ones.
Do the opposite.
Put it in, and write one line — what you tried, what went wrong, what you did next.
A failure you can explain is evidence of thinking.
A failure you hide is worth nothing.
Let's do one properly.
Your written evidence has to describe practice, experimentation and revision.
Here is a student's first try.
I painted flowers.
Then I painted more flowers.
I like the last one best.
Pause, and ask what is missing.
It says what she made. It never says what she noticed, what she changed, or why.
No thinking is visible, so there is nothing to score.
Those three questions are what she never answered.
Now rewrite it in three moves.
Move one: say what you did.
My first three works used flat colour.
Move two: say what you saw, and why you changed.
They felt lifeless, so I experimented with layered glazes in works four to six.
Move three: say what came next.
Then in works seven to nine I combined the best of both.
Read it back.
Practice, experimentation and revision are all there, and every change carries a reason.
Four things to take away.
One: a single investigation — a connected body of work, not fifteen one-offs.
Two: the three actions — practice, experimentation, revision — across the works.
Three: synthesis — material, process and idea in one message.
Four: development — each work raises the next question, and failures count.
Three last things, and this is where marks go.
First, never let your fifteen images be fifteen separate pictures; the connection is the point.
Second, name the change and the reason together.
Saying I changed it proves nothing. Saying I changed it because the flat colour felt lifeless is evidence.
Third, do not hide the experiments that failed — the readers want to see what you tried.
