Preserve an argument in retelling and defend a position
IntroducedYour saved position stays in this browser. Resuming does not complete the lesson or answer its questions.
Retell an argument exactly
- A speaking task plays: expert专家to think / believe认为,city城市should应该to restrict限制private car私家车,because因为public transport公共交通more更environmental protection环保;but不过,at / in在public transport公共交通not不well-developed发达(modifier / structural particle)的local地区,this这个policy政策maybe / possible可能can / will会to / for / give给resident居民to bring带来inconvenient不便。 You retell it, then defend your own position.
- The retelling must keep the scope (in which places) and the causal link (why), including the speaker's qualification.
Keep scope and causes
- Claim: cities should limit private cars. Reason: public transport is greener. Qualification: in areas with poor public transport, it may cause problems.
- Faithful: expert专家to think / believe认为city城市should应该to restrict限制private car私家车,because因为public transport公共交通more更environmental protection环保,but但at / in在public transport公共交通not不well-developed发达(modifier / structural particle)的area地方maybe / possible可能not不convenient方便。
the expert专家believes认为cities城市should应该limit限制private cars私家车。
Which retelling keeps the speaker's qualification?

It keeps the claim, and the limit on where it applies.
Observation versus interpretation
- In a picture response, separate what you see (一个old man or woman老人at / in在subway station地铁站to see看map地图) from what you infer (he / him他maybe / possible可能not不to be familiar with熟悉here这里).
- Mark inferences: maybe / possible可能, seemingly看起来, as if好像.
Seen or inferred?
Separate observation from interpretation in a picture response.
Picture: an old man studies a map in a subway station. Which sentence correctly marks an inference?

可能 marks the statement as a guess from the picture. The other options state as fact things the picture cannot show: that he does not know the city, his nationality, or three hours of being lost.

These mark inferences.
Defend your position
- State your view, give a reason and an example, then answer a likely objection: someone有人can / will会variant of 说说to restrict限制private car私家车not不convenient方便,but但是if如果to raise增加公交线路,this这个question问题can / may可以to solve解决。
- Answering an objection shows you have considered the other side.
I / me我to agree同意to restrict限制private car私家车。first第一,空气质量会变good好;second第二,to be connected交通can / will会more更unobstructed通畅。someone有人anxious担心to go out somewhere…出行inconvenient不便,but但city城市can / may可以early先to raise增加underground railway地铁and / with和公交线路,again / then再progressively逐步to restrict限制private car私家车。

View → reason → objection → response.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the qualification, making the speaker sound more extreme.
- Presenting a guess about a picture as a fact.
Dropping the speaker's qualification is acceptable if the main claim is kept.

It changes the scope of the argument.
Recap
- Retell claim, reason and qualification with their scope.
- Mark inferences (maybe / possible可能, seemingly看起来); defend a view with reason, example and an answer to an objection.
