From pinyin to character
- A writing task shows: we / us我们in the same place一起to go去 ___ (fàn) inn店variant of 吃吃lunch午饭(suggestion)吧。 You must write the character for fàn.
- The answer is cooked rice饭, not contrary反 or surname Fan范: the sentence is about eating, so the character with the food radical "to eat" or "food" radical…饣 fits.
Use the sentence to choose the character
- Many characters share a sound, or nearly. The meaning of the sentence tells you which one: restaurant饭店 (restaurant, fàn), model模范 (model, fàn), to oppose反对 (oppose, fǎn, a different tone).
- Look at radicals: "to eat" or "food" radical…饣 food, "water" radical in Chinese…氵 water, mouth口 mouth, "speech" or "words" radical…讠 speech, (bound form) tree木 wood. to shout喝 (drink) has mouth口; to wash洗 (wash) has "water" radical in Chinese…氵.
we我们together一起go to去a restaurant饭店eat吃lunch午饭吧。

One sentence from a scene word
- Another task gives a picture and one word (for example to run跑步) and asks for a complete sentence.
- Include who, the action and one more detail you can see: he / him他every day每天early morning早上at / in在park (for public recreation)公园to run跑步。
he他every每天morning早上in在the park公园runs跑步。
Write only what you can see
- Describe the picture; do not invent details that are not shown: if the picture shows one person, don't write they他们.
- Keep the word you were given unchanged and use it correctly: to run跑步 is a verb, so I / me我degree / adjective linker很to run跑步 ✗.
Word: to clean打扫. Picture: a girl cleaning a room. Good: she / her她at / in在to clean打扫room房间。 Too vague: she / her她degree / adjective linker很busy忙。 (doesn't use to clean打扫)

Common mistakes
- Writing a character with the right sound but the wrong meaning (反店 for restaurant饭店).
- Adding people, places or actions the picture does not show.

- Choose characters by sentence meaning and radical, not sound alone.
- Scene sentences: who + action + one visible detail, using the given word correctly.
