Continuous, not repeated
- the whole time一直 means without interruption; for something done again and again, use always总是 or often经常.
- Put the whole time一直 before the verb, not at the end of the sentence: he他the whole time一直(ongoing)在to work工作, not he他(ongoing)在to work工作the whole time一直.

Another meaning: straight ahead
- Giving directions, the whole time一直 means "straight": the whole time一直towards往the front前walk走，then / just就to / arrive到(completed / change)了。 — "Go straight ahead and you're there."
- With not / haven't没 or not不, it means "never, all this time": he他the whole time一直not / haven't没to come来 — "He still hasn't come (the whole time)."
