Nobody will tell you when to start
- Independent learning 自主学习 is taking responsibility for what you learn and when, instead of waiting to be told.
- It is not studying alone. It is deciding, and then checking whether the decision worked.
- Every GAC module assumes it, and GAC003 is where it is taught explicitly.
Read before, not only after
- Reading before a class turns a lecture from dictation into a conversation you can follow.
- Even a skim is enough: you arrive knowing the words that are about to be used.
- ⚠ Reading only after class means the lecture was spent decoding, and decoding is slower than listening.
Skimming the material before a lecture is worth doing even if you understand little of it.

Set a goal you can check
- A learning goal 学习目标 must be observable: explain the water cycle in English without notes beats study science.
- Set it for a week, not a semester. A week is short enough to feel the deadline and long enough to do the work.
- At the end of the week, answer honestly: did I do it? That answer is the material of your journal.
Which learning goal is usable?
It can be failed, so it can be checked. A goal that cannot be failed never gets done.
Write one learning goal for this week that someone else could check on Friday.
Example: "By Friday I will explain the carbon cycle in English for two minutes without notes."

Unusable: "Improve my English."
Usable: "By Friday, summarise one BBC article aloud in two minutes without reading from the page."
The second can be failed, which is what makes it worth setting. The first cannot be failed, which is why it never gets done.
Group study that works
- Group study 小组学习 works when each person prepares something to teach.
- Explaining is the test of understanding: you find the gap at the moment you cannot say the sentence.
- A group where everyone reads their own notes in the same room is not group study, it is company.

Use the library and the databases, not a search engine alone. A source you can cite is worth more than a source you cannot, and the difference shows up in every piece of written work you submit.
Re-reading your notes is one of the strongest ways to prepare for a test.
Recognition is not recall. Close the book and retrieve the answer instead.
Do not confuse re-reading with studying. Re-reading feels productive because the material looks familiar — but recognition is not recall, and the exam asks for recall. Close the book and say it.
