A decision before an answer
- “Make a decision” and “do homework” use different verbs. Translation alone can hide these patterns.
- Your goal: Choose six vocabulary answers from four options (Part 5).
Read the relationship
- Read for topic and meaning before individual gaps. Part 5 tests lexical choices, collocations and semantic fit.
- Supply six single words using grammatical context (Part 6).
“She ____ a decision.”
Make a decision is the expected collocation.
Use the defining rule
- Compare all four alternatives in the complete sentence. Similar words may take different prepositions.
- Supply six single words using grammatical context (Part 6).
“I have studied here ____ two years.”
For gives the duration; since gives a starting point.
Check the conditions
- Part 6 requires one word. Identify whether the gap needs an auxiliary, determiner, pronoun, preposition or connector.
- Supply six single words using grammatical context (Part 6).
“The journey took longer ____ we expected.” Than makes a comparison with longer. Then marks time order, and although introduces contrast. “She has lived here ____ 2021” needs since, marking the starting point.
“This is better ____ the old one.”
Better is comparative and takes than for the comparison.
Apply the task format
- Check tense, agreement and references by rereading the complete text after answering.
- Supply six single words using grammatical context (Part 6).
One-word answers must stay one word. A correct meaning expressed in a phrase does not meet the format.
Which answer fits this case?
Choose six vocabulary answers from four options (Part 5)
Then and than have the same grammatical role.
Then marks sequence; than marks comparison.
