This topic gives you three tools. Numbers that stack like blocks, with no new words after ten. Dates that run big to small, year first. And two magic question words that unlock every timetable, ji dian for clock time and xingqi ji for the day of the week. With them you can read any classroom notice, and the same number three will turn out to mean three different things in one line.
Chinese numbers build like blocks. Ten plus one: shiyi, eleven, said as ten-one. Two tens: ershi, twenty, said as two-ten. Twenty-three is ershi san, two-ten-three. There are no new words after ten; you stack the blocks you already own. Build thirty-five out loud now: sanshi wu, three-ten-five. If you said it, you just built a number you never studied, which is exactly why this system is friendly.
Dates run big to small. Nian, year, then yue, month, then ri or hao for day, with dian for o'clock and fen for minute on the clock. Chinese always says the biggest unit first, the same habit as Chinese names and addresses, biggest first. So May the fifth is wu yue wu hao, month five, day five. Say today's date aloud in the frame, dot dot dot nian, dot dot dot yue, dot dot dot hao, and you have used the pattern for real.
Two question words unlock every timetable. Ji dian asks clock time, xingqi ji asks the day of the week, and zai nali asks where. Read the notice: xingqisan xiawu san dian, xuexiao, Wednesday, three p.m., at school. One line, three facts, and the same san plays three roles: the third weekday, the third hour, and the third room number if there were one. The word after the number names its role, which is why you read the unit, not just the digit.
The classic error: answering a weekday question with only an hour. Read the question word and its unit. Xingqi ji wants a day, so Wednesday. Ji dian wants a clock time, so three p.m. And one order rule for your own sentences: a time phrase usually sits before the verb. Wo jintian san dian qu xuexiao, I'm going to school at three today, runs person, time, action, place, in that order. Build one about your own day and keep the order.
Pause and check both. First, thirty-five is sanshi wu, three-ten-five, stacked blocks. Second, the year comes first, nian, then yue, then ri or hao. The remaining review items: xingqi ji asks the day of the week, ji dian asks clock time, and the time phrase sits before the verb, wo jintian san dian qu xuexiao. You can now read a Chinese timetable line and answer all three of its questions.
