IGCSE English

Tips

IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510) is assessed on four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The writing topics here are organised by the text type the exam asks for — informal email, formal letter, report, article, review, essay — because each has its own conventions and is marked against them.

For a second-language candidate, marks are rarely lost on ideas. They are lost on register (an informal email written formally), structure (an article with no headline or paragraphs), and accuracy in a few repeated patterns — articles, tenses, prepositions.

Fixing your own five recurring errors is worth more than learning new vocabulary.
