Festivals and plans, with the grammar of explaining yourself. Two or-s, haishi for questions and huozhe for statements. Two connector pairs, yinwei suoyi for reasons and suiran danshi for concessions. And xian zai for the ordered plan. These patterns let you explain a simple plan rather than recite disconnected nouns.
Two or-s, and the question-statement split decides. Haishi lives in an alternative question: ni chi mifan haishi miantiao, will you eat rice or noodles, where the question offers the options and waits for a pick. Huozhe gives alternatives in an ordinary statement: mifan huozhe miantiao dou xing, rice or noodles, either is fine, where nothing is being asked. The same two foods, two grammars, decided by asking versus stating.
The two connector pairs encode two different relations. Yinwei suoyi connects reason and consequence: yinwei xiayu, suoyi women zuo gongjiaoche, because it's raining, we're taking the bus. Suiran danshi connects a concession and a contrast: suiran jintian hen leng, danshi women xiang qu kan pengyou, although it's cold today, we still want to visit friends. The concession concedes the cold, and the plan survives it. State your own plan with both pairs and feel the difference in relation, not just in words.
A festival plan introduces three things: the date, the people and the activity. Chun jie, Spring Festival, women quan jia, my whole family, chi jiaozi, eat dumplings. The xian zai frame lines up the day's actions when there are several. And the honesty rule: one family's traditions are not universal, so describe your own customs rather than presenting one household as the rule. Date, people, activity, a plan a listener can picture.
The watch-out is the swap: haishi belongs to questions and huozhe to statements, and exchanging them is the classic error of this topic. A choice question with huozhe stops being a question, and a statement with haishi starts sounding like one. Decide whether you are asking or stating, and the right or follows.
Pause and check both. First, haishi lives in the alternative question. Second, suiran danshi concedes the cold and keeps the plan, while yinwei suoyi gives the reason for the bus. The remaining review items: the rain sentence, yinwei xiayu, suoyi women dai zai jia li, and the three ingredients of a festival plan, date, people and activity.
