    全 + Nom — « tout, entier »

    English

全 in front of a noun scoops up "the whole, entire" thing in one sweep. It bonds to a small set of "whole-able" nouns — 身 (body), 家 (family), 国 (country), 世界 (world), 校 (school), 年 (year) — and calls for a 都 in the predicate. The one rule to burn in: 全 takes no 的.

    Structure: 全 + Noun + 都 + Predicate

our我们wǒ menwhole family全家quán jiāall都dōuhave been to去过qù guoBeijing北京Běi jīng。

Our whole family has been to Beijing.

    this这个zhè geplace地方dì fangall year全年quán nián都dōuvery很hěnhot热rè。

This place is hot all year round.

Remember: 全 = the whole thing in one sweep — and never 的 (全家 ✓, 全的家 ✗). It almost always sends a 都 downstream to echo the "all."

    Watch out

    • It attaches only to "whole" nouns (身, 家, 国, 校, 年…).
    • Advanced flip: 全都不去 = "none go at all"; 不全都去 = "not all go" — where 不 sits changes everything.
    Français

全 devant un nom englobe « tout, entier » d'un seul coup. Il s'attache à un petit ensemble de noms « totalisables » — 身 (corps), 家 (famille), 国 (pays), 世界 (monde), 校 (école), 年 (année) — et exige un 都 dans le prédicat. La règle à graver : 全 ne prend pas de 的.

    Structure : 全 + Noun + 都 + Predicate

our我们wǒ menwhole family全家quán jiāall都dōuhave been to去过qù guoBeijing北京Běi jīng。

Toute notre famille est allée à Pékin.

    this这个zhè geplace地方dì fangall year全年quán nián都dōuvery很hěnhot热rè。

Il fait chaud ici toute l'année.

Retenez : 全 = le tout d'un coup — et jamais 的 (全家 ✓, 全的家 ✗). Il envoie presque toujours un 都 en aval pour échoer au « tous ».

    Faites attention

    • Il s'attache uniquement aux noms « totaux » (身, 家, 国, 校, 年…).
    • Retournement avancé : 全都不去 = « personne ne va du tout »; 不全都去 = « pas tous vont » — où place 不 change tout.
    1.2

    Adjectif + 死了 — « … à mourir, extrêmement »

    English

死了 after an adjective cranks it to the limit — "… to death, extremely." It's the exact match of English "scared to death," "bored to death": vivid, casual, and slanted toward unpleasant feelings. The subject is optional.

Structure: (Subject +) Adjective + 死了

    I'm我wǒhungry饿èto death死了sǐ le!

    I'm starving!

    today今天jīn tiāntired累lèito death死了sǐ le!

    I'm exhausted today!

    this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fuugly丑chǒuto death死了sǐ le。

    This outfit is hideous.

Remember: 死了 = English "…to death" (累死了 = "dead tired"). It's the drama-queen cousin of 极了 — louder, more informal, mostly for misery (累, 饿, 热, 丑) — and it attaches bare, no 得.

    Watch out

    • Reach for it when the feeling is bad and you want to exaggerate; for neutral praise, 极了 or 得很 fit better.
    Français

死了 après un adjectif pousse celui-ci au maximum — « … à mourir, extrêmement. » C'est l'équivalent exact de l'anglais « scared to death », « bored to death » : vif, familier et orienté vers des sentiments désagréables. Le sujet est optionnel.

    Structure : (Subject +) Adjective + 死了

    I'm我wǒhungry饿èto death死了sǐ le!

    J'ai faim !

    today今天jīn tiāntired累lèito death死了sǐ le!

    Je suis épuisé aujourd'hui !

    this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fuugly丑chǒuto death死了sǐ le。

    Cette tenue est hideuse.

    Retenez : 死了 = anglais « …to death » (累死了 = « mort de fatigue »). C'est le cousin exagéré de 极了 — plus fort, plus informel, surtout pour le mal-être (累, 饿, 热, 丑) — et il s'attache nu, sans 得.

    Faites attention

    • Utilisez-le quand le sentiment est mauvais et que vous voulez exagérer; pour un compliment neutre, 极了 ou 得很 conviennent mieux.

    差不多 — « à peu près, à peu près pareil »

    English

Read 差不多 literally and it explains itself: 差 (difference) + 不 (not) + 多 (much) = "not much difference." Hence "about the same, more or less, almost." It can stand alone as a predicate, link two things (A 跟 B 差不多), or work as an adverb before a quantity.

    Structure: Subject + 差不多 · A + 跟 / 和 + B + 差不多

these这zhètwo两个liǎng gewords词cí的demeanings意思yì siabout the same差不多chà bu duō。

These two words mean about the same thing.

Shanghai上海Shàng hǎiand和héNew York纽约Niǔ yuēmuch the same差不多chà bu duō。

Shanghai and New York are much the same.

Remember: 差(difference) 不(not) 多(much) — "not much off." Decode the three characters and the meaning ("about the same / almost there") falls out for free.

    Watch out

    • As an adverb it also means "almost (there)": 差不多了 ("that's about enough"), 差不多十点 ("around ten").
    • For several items, add 都: 这几个都差不多.
    Français

Lisez 差不多 littéralement et il s'explique lui-même : 差 (différence) + 不 (pas) + 多 (beaucoup) = « pas beaucoup de différence. » D'où « à peu près pareil, à peu près, presque. » Il peut fonctionner seul comme prédicat, relier deux éléments (A 跟 B 差不多), ou servir d'adverbe devant une quantité.

    Structure : Subject + 差不多 · A + 跟 / 和 + B + 差不多

these这zhètwo两个liǎng gewords词cí的demeanings意思yì siabout the same差不多chà bu duō。

Ces deux mots signifient à peu près la même chose.

Shanghai上海Shàng hǎiand和héNew York纽约Niǔ yuēmuch the same差不多chà bu duō。

Shanghai et New York sont très semblables.

Retenez : 差(différence) 不(pas) 多(beaucoup) — « pas trop loin. » Décodez les trois caractères et le sens (« à peu près pareil / presque là ») tombe tout seul.

    Faites attention

    • En tant qu'adverbe, il signifie aussi « presque (là) » : 差不多了 (« c'est à peu près assez »), 差不多十点 (« autour de dix heures »).
    • Pour plusieurs éléments, ajoutez 都 : 这几个都差不多.
    2.2

    看来 — « il semble, apparemment »

    English

看来 offers up the speaker's read of a situation — "it seems, apparently." Use 在 + person + 看来 for "in someone's view." The pitfall is confusing it with 看起来 ("it looks like" from physical appearance): 看来 is a judgement in your head, 看起来 is what your eyes report.

    Structure: 看来 + Judgement · 在 + Person + 看来

    it seems看来kàn láihe他tānot不bùcoming来lái了le。

    It seems he's not coming.

    in在zàimy我wǒview看来kàn láithis,这个zhè geplan计划jì huàwon't work行不通xíng bu tōng。

In my view, this plan won't work.

Remember: 看来 = "drawing it together, I reckon…" (a conclusion); 看起来 = "it appears to the eye." 来 is the "arriving at a verdict" part — you've weighed things and landed on a view.

    Watch out

    • 在我看来 is "in my opinion" — a personal verdict, not a fact.
    Français

看来 exprime la lecture que le locuteur fait d'une situation — « il semble, apparemment. » Utilisez 在 + personne + 看来 pour « à l'avis de quelqu'un ». L'écueil est de le confondre avec 看起来 (« ça a l'air » basé sur l'apparence physique) : 看来 est un jugement dans votre tête, 看起来 est ce que vos yeux rapportent.

    Structure : 看来 + Judgement · 在 + Person + 看来

    it seems看来kàn láihe他tānot不bùcoming来lái了le。

Il semble qu'il ne vienne pas.

    in在zàimy我wǒview看来kàn láithis,这个zhè geplan计划jì huàwon't work行不通xíng bu tōng。

À mon avis, ce plan ne marchera pas.

Retenez : 看来 = « en synthétisant, je pense… » (une conclusion); 看起来 = « ça a l'œil. » 来 est la partie « arriver à un verdict » — vous avez pesé le pour et le contre et conclu.

    Faites attention

    • 在我看来 est « à mon avis » — un jugement personnel, pas un fait.
    2.3

正好 — « juste parfait, par hasard »

    English

正好 is a happy bullseye — 正 (exactly) + 好 (right) — "just right" (in size, time, or amount) or "as it happens, happen to." It plays both adjective and adverb.

Structure: Subject + 正好 + Verb Phrase · … 正好 (adjective)

you你nǐcame来lái了leI!我wǒwas just about to正好zhèng hǎo要yàolook for找zhǎoyou你nǐ。

You're here! I was just about to look for you.

this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fu的desize大小dà xiǎojust right正好zhèng hǎo。

This outfit is just the right size.

Remember: 正(exactly) 好(right) = a lucky bullseye — the right size, the right moment, the right amount, all landing at once.

    Watch out

    • Adverb (正好要走 "just about to leave") and adjective (大小正好 "just the right size") — same word, two roles.
    Français

正好 est une cible parfaite et heureuse — 正 (exactement) + 好 (juste) — « juste parfait » (taille, moment ou montant) ou « par hasard, avoir l'occasion de ». Il joue à la fois l'adjectif et l'adverbe.

    Structure : Subject + 正好 + Verb Phrase · … 正好 (adjectif)

you你nǐcame来lái了leI!我wǒwas just about to正好zhèng hǎo要yàolook for找zhǎoyou你nǐ。

Tu es là ! J'allais justement te chercher.

this这件zhè jiànoutfit衣服yī fu的desize大小dà xiǎojust right正好zhèng hǎo。

Cette tenue est exactement bonne taille.

Retenez : 正(exactement) 好(juste) = une cible parfaite et chanceuse — la bonne taille, le bon moment, le bon montant, le tout tombant en même temps.

    Faites attention

    • Adverbe (正好要走 « sur le point de partir ») et adjectif (大小正好 « juste la bonne taille ») — même mot, deux rôles.
    2.4

    只好 — « n'avoir pas d'autre choix que de »

    English

只好 is the only option left — 只 (only) + 好 (good/workable) — "the only workable choice, so I'll take it (reluctantly)." English: "have no choice but to, can only, had to."

Structure: (Situation,) (Subject +) 只好 + Verb Phrase

the restaurants餐厅cān tīngall都dōuclosed关门guān mén了lewe,我们wǒ menhad no choice but to只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùeat吃chīfast food快餐kuài cān。

The restaurants were all closed, so we had no choice but to get fast food.

I我wǒforgot忘wàng了leto book预约yù yuēso had to,只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùqueue排队pái duì。

I forgot to book, so I had to queue.

Remember: 只好 = "the ONLY good option left" — you do it, but you'd rather not. For a stronger, more forced "have to," step up to 不得不.

    Watch out

    • It always carries a whiff of reluctance — the choice isn't a happy one.
    Français

只好 est l'unique option restante — 只 (seulement) + 好 (bon/fonctionnel) — « le seul choix fonctionnel, donc je le prends (à regret). » Anglais : « have no choice but to, can only, had to. »

Structure : (Situation,) (Subject +) 只好 + Verb Phrase

the restaurants餐厅cān tīngall都dōuclosed关门guān mén了lewe,我们wǒ menhad no choice but to只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùeat吃chīfast food快餐kuài cān。

Les restaurants étaient tous fermés, nous n'avions pas d'autre choix que de manger du fast-food.

I我wǒforgot忘wàng了leto book预约yù yuēso had to,只好zhǐ hǎogo去qùqueue排队pái duì。

J'ai oublié de réserver, j'ai dû faire la queue.

Retenez : 只好 = « SEULEMENT la bonne option restante » — on le fait, mais on préférait ne pas le faire. Pour un « devoir » plus fort et plus forcé, montez en puissance avec 不得不.

    Faites attention

    • Il porte toujours une nuance de réticence — le choix n'est pas joyeux.
    2.5

    又 + 不 / 没 — négation emphatique

    English

This 又 has nothing to do with "again." In front of 不 / 没 it adds a defensive, argumentative kick — "(but) it's not even / it's not as if …." You'll hear it constantly with 干吗 / 干嘛 ("why on earth").

    Structure: 又 + 不 / 没 + Predicate

    ask问wènme我wǒwhy干吗gàn máI?我wǒit's not as if又yòudon't不bùknow知道zhī dào。

Why ask me? It's not as if I'd know.

these这些zhè xiēdishes菜càiit's not as if又yòuhaven't没méigone off坏huàiwhy,为什么wèi shén me要yàothrow out扔rēng?

The food hasn't even gone off — why throw it out?

Remember: 又 + 不/没 = the "it's-not-as-if" shrug (又不是, 又没…) — a verbal eye-roll defending yourself. It is not the "again" 又, even though it's the same character.

    Watch out

    • It needs that defensive context — without an implied "so why…?", it reads as plain "again."
    Français

    Ce 又 n'a rien à voir avec « encore ». Devant 不 / 没, il ajoute une pointe défensive, argumentative — « (mais) ce n'est pas comme si / ce n'est pas du tout …. » On l'entend constamment avec 干吗 / 干嘛 (« pourquoi diable »).

    Structure : 又 + 不 / 没 + Predicate

    ask问wènme我wǒwhy干吗gàn máI?我wǒit's not as if又yòudon't不bùknow知道zhī dào。

Pourquoi me demander ? Ce n'est pas comme si je savais.

these这些zhè xiēdishes菜càiit's not as if又yòuhaven't没méigone off坏huàiwhy,为什么wèi shén me要yàothrow out扔rēng?

La nourriture n'est pas même avariée — pourquoi la jeter ?

    Retenez : 又 + 不/没 = le hausse d'épaules « ce n'est pas comme si » (又不是, 又没…) — un roulement d'yeux verbal pour se défendre. Ce n'est pas le 又 « encore », même si c'est le même caractère.

    Faites attention

    • Il nécessite ce contexte défensif — sans un « pourquoi… ? » sous-entendu, il se lit comme un simple « encore ».
    2.6

    可 + Adjectif + 了 — « vraiment, tellement » emphatique

    English

The adverb 可 slams an adjective home — "really, so" — usually against what you'd expect. It's informal and northern-flavoured, and it almost always closes with 了.

    Structure: 可 + Adjective + 了

    this这只zhè zhīpuppy小狗xiǎo gǒuso可kěnaughty淘气táo qì了le!

    This puppy is so naughty!

    he他tāreally可kěimpressive优秀yōu xiù了le!

    He's really impressive!

Remember: 可…了 wraps an adjective in a "wow, really!" (可好了, 可漂亮了, 可大了). It nearly always bookends with 了, and has a chatty, northern ring. (Note 可爱/可贵 are not examples of this pattern — there 可- is a word-building prefix meaning "-able / worthy of," not the emphatic 可.)

    Watch out

    • 可 also means "but," can stress a verb (我可没说), or mean "finally" — context picks the sense.
    Français

L'adverbe 可 cloue un adjectif au mur — « vraiment, si » — généralement contre ce qu'on s'attendrait à voir. C'est familier et typé nord, et il se termine presque toujours par 了.

    Structure : 可 + Adjective + 了

    this这只zhè zhīpuppy小狗xiǎo gǒuso可kěnaughty淘气táo qì了le!

Ce chiot est si malin !

    he他tāreally可kěimpressive优秀yōu xiù了le!

    Il est vraiment impressionnant !

Retenez : 可…了 enveloppe l'adjectif d'un « wow, vraiment ! » (可好了, 可漂亮了, 可大了). Il encadre presque toujours avec 了, et a une tonalité de conversation du nord. (Note : 可爱/可贵 ne sont pas des exemples de ce motif — là, le préfixe 可- est un préfixe de formation de mots signifiant « -able / digne de », pas l'emphatique 可.)

    Faites attention

    • 可 signifie aussi « mais », peut accentuer un verbe (我可没说), ou signifier « enfin » — le contexte choisit le sens.
    2.7

    原来 — « originalement ; il s'avère que »

    English

原来 wears two hats: "original(ly), former" (原来的 + noun), and "so it turns out / all along" — that lightbulb moment when you suddenly grasp something you'd missed.

    Structure: 原来 + 的 + Noun · Subject + 原来 + Predicate

    so原来yuán láiyou你nǐare是shìa teacher老师lǎo shī啊a!

    Oh, so you're a teacher!

    we我们wǒ menoriginally原来yuán láilived住zhùin在zàiPudong浦东Pǔ dōng。

    We originally lived in Pudong.

Remember: both senses share "the way things really were all along." Realisation: 原来如此 ("ah, so that's it!"). "Former": 原来的价格 ("the original price"). Contrast 本来 ("originally, but it changed") at the end of this level.

    Watch out

    • The "aha!" sense is the one that surprises learners — 原来 ≠ "originally" there, it's "it turns out."
    Français

原来 porte deux casquettes : « original(ement), ancien » (原来的 + nom), et « il s'avère que / c'était toujours ça » — ce moment où l'on comprend soudain quelque chose qu'on avait manqué.

    Structure : 原来 + 的 + Noun · Subject + 原来 + Predicate

    so原来yuán láiyou你nǐare是shìa teacher老师lǎo shī啊a!

Oh, alors tu es professeur !

    we我们wǒ menoriginally原来yuán láilived住zhùin在zàiPudong浦东Pǔ dōng。

    Nous vivions originalement à Pudong.

Retenez : les deux sens partagent « la façon dont les choses étaient réellement tout ce temps-là. » Réalisation : 原来如此 (« ah, c'est donc ça ! »). « Ancien » : 原来的价格 (« le prix initial »). Contrastez avec 本来 (« à l'origine, mais ça a changé ») à la fin de ce niveau.

    Faites attention

    • Le sens « eureka ! » est celui qui surprend les apprenants — 原来 n'y signifie pas « originalement », c'est « il s'avère que ».*
    2.8

差点(儿) — « faillir (et ne pas avoir fait) »

    English

差点 = "off by a hair" — something nearly happened, usually something bad, and the feeling is relief that it didn't. The iron rule: whatever follows 差点 did not actually happen.

    Structure: Subject + 差点 (+ 就) + Predicate (+ 了)

    the car车chēalmost差点chà diǎnhit撞到zhuàng dàome我wǒ。

The car almost hit me (it didn't).

    I我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānalmost差点chà diǎnwas late迟到chí dào了le。

    I was almost late today.

Remember: 差点 = "missed it by THAT much" → the thing did not happen (and good thing too). The famous quirk: 差点没摔倒 still means "almost fell" — the 没 adds feeling, not logic.

    Watch out

    • For a wanted outcome, 差点没 flips to relief it did happen: 差点没赶上 ("only just caught it").
    Français

差点 = « d'un cheveu » — quelque chose qui aurait failli arriver, généralement quelque chose de mauvais, et le sentiment est le soulagement que cela ne soit pas arrivé. La règle de fer : ce qui suit 差点 ne s'est jamais réellement produit.

    Structure : Subject + 差点 (+ 就) + Predicate (+ 了)

    the car车chēalmost差点chà diǎnhit撞到zhuàng dàome我wǒ。

La voiture m'a fauché (elle ne l'a pas fait).

    I我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānalmost差点chà diǎnwas late迟到chí dào了le。

J'ai failli être en retard aujourd'hui.

Retenez : 差点 = « l'avoir raté de JUSTE CE TANT » → la chose ne s'est pas produite (et tant mieux). La particularité célèbre : 差点没摔倒 signifie encore « avoir failli tomber » — le 没 ajoute du sentiment, pas de logique.

    Faites attention

    • Pour un résultat souhaité, 差点没 bascule vers le soulagement que cela se soit produit : 差点没赶上 (« l'avoir rattrapé de justesse »).
    2.9

    从来 + 都 — « toujours, depuis le début »

    English

从来 ("from the very start") with 都(是) means "always, have always." But you'll meet it far more often in the negative — 从来不 / 从来没 = "never (not once)."

    Structure: Subject + 从来 + 都(是) + Predicate

    he他tāalways从来cóng láihas都dōubeen like this这样zhè yàng。

    He's always been like this.

    I我wǒnever从来cóng lái不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ。

    I never drink.

Remember: 从来 = "from the beginning until now." Positive form needs 都 (从来都…); negative is the everyday one — 从来不 / 从来没 = "never, not a single time."

    Watch out

    • Don't drop the 都 in the positive: 从来都很努力 ✓, not 从来很努力.
    Français

从来 (« dès le tout début ») avec 都(是) signifie « toujours, avoir toujours ». Mais on le rencontrera beaucoup plus souvent dans la négation — 从来不 / 从来没 = « jamais (pas une seule fois) ».*

    Structure : Subject + 从来 + 都(是) + Predicate

    he他tāalways从来cóng láihas都dōubeen like this这样zhè yàng。

Il a toujours été comme ça.

    I我wǒnever从来cóng lái不bùdrink喝酒hē jiǔ。

    Je ne bois jamais.

Retenez : 从来 = « du début jusqu'à maintenant. » La forme positive nécessite 都 (从来都…) ; la négative est la courante — 从来不 / 从来没 = « jamais, pas une seule fois. */

    Faites attention

    • Ne supprimez pas le 都 dans la forme positive : 从来都很努力 ✓, pas 从来很努力.
    2.10

    结果 — « en conséquence, finalement »

    English

As a connector, 结果 ("result") means "as a result, and in the end" — and it usually drags in an unexpected or unwelcome outcome. It opens the second clause with a twist.

Structure: Reason / Situation ,结果 + Result

    she她tādressed穿chuān得devery很hěnlightly少shǎoas a result,结果jié guǒcaught a cold感冒gǎn mào了le。

She dressed too lightly and ended up catching a cold.

    he他tādrove开kāi得detoo太tàifast快kuàias a result,结果jié guǒhit撞到zhuàng dào了lesomeone人rén。

He drove too fast and ended up hitting someone.

Remember: 结果 = "the (often nasty) upshot." It sets up a payoff that's usually bad or surprising — "…and as a result, of course, X."

    Watch out

    • It's also a plain noun ("result"): 考试结果 ("the exam results").
    Français

En tant que connecteur, 结果 (« résultat ») signifie « en conséquence, et finalement » — et il entraîne souvent un résultat inattendu ou indésirable. Il ouvre la deuxième proposition avec un revirement.

Structure : Reason / Situation ,结果 + Result

    she她tādressed穿chuān得devery很hěnlightly少shǎoas a result,结果jié guǒcaught a cold感冒gǎn mào了le。

Elle s'est trop vêtue légèrement et a fini par attraper froid.

    he他tādrove开kāi得detoo太tàifast快kuàias a result,结果jié guǒhit撞到zhuàng dào了lesomeone人rén。

Il a trop vite conduit et a fini par renverser quelqu'un.

Retenez : 结果 = « la (souvent désagréable) issue finale. » Il pose une conclusion qui est généralement mauvaise ou surprenante — « …et en conséquence, bien sûr, X. */

    Faites attention

    • C'est aussi un nom simple (« résultat ») : 考试结果 (« les résultats de l'examen »).
    2.11

    够 — « assez »

    English

够 means "enough, sufficient." Its trick is that position flips the mood: before a verb/adjective it's "enough to …" (够吃, 够大); after certain verbs it's "fed up" (受够了). It often takes 了.

    Structure: 够 + Verb / Adjective (+ 了) · Verb + 够 + 了

    we我们wǒ menbought买mǎi的defood菜càienough够gòuto eat吃chī了le。

    We bought enough food.

    I我wǒput up with it受shòuenough够gòu了le!

    I've had enough!

Remember: 够 before = "enough to" (够高); 受够了 / V够了 after = "had enough OF it." Same word, opposite feeling, decided by which side of the verb it sits.

    Watch out

    • 吃够了 = "sick of eating it" (fed up), not "ate enough" — mind that "fed-up" tilt.
    Français

够 signifie « assez, suffisant ». Son tour de passe-passe est que l'inversion de position change l'humeur : avant un verbe/adjectif, c'est « assez pour… » (够吃, 够大) ; après certains verbes, c'est « en avoir marre » (受够了). Il prend souvent 了.

    Structure : 够 + Verb / Adjective (+ 了) · Verb + 够 + 了

    we我们wǒ menbought买mǎi的defood菜càienough够gòuto eat吃chī了le。

Nous avons acheté assez de nourriture.

    I我wǒput up with it受shòuenough够gòu了le!

    J'en ai assez !

Retenez : 够 avant = « assez pour » (够高) ; 受够了 / V够了 après = « en avoir MARRE DE ». Même mot, sentiment opposé, décidé par le côté du verbe où il se place.

    Faites attention

    • 吃够了 = « en avoir marre d'en manger » (en avoir marre), pas « avoir mangé assez » — attention à cette nuance « en avoir marre ».
    2.12

甚至 — « même, au point que »

    English

甚至 hauls in the most extreme or surprising case — "even, so much that." It frequently links arms with 连 … 都 / 也 for extra punch.

    Structure: ……,甚至 (连) + Extreme Case + 都 / 也 …

    还是 + 动词 + 吧 — « il vaudrait mieux, après tout »

    English

Beyond "or," 还是 before a verb settles on the choice you prefer after weighing things up — "had better, I'd rather (after all)." It loves to close with 吧.

    Structure: Subject + 还是 + Verb Phrase + 吧

    after all还是hái shìtomorrow明天míng tiāngo去qù吧ba。

    Let's go tomorrow after all.

    you你nǐhad better还是hái shìnot别biégo去qù了le。

    You'd better not go.

Remember: 还是…吧 = "on reflection, better to…" — a verdict reached after mulling it over. Distinct from 还是 = "or" (in questions) or "still."

    Watch out

    • The 吧 softens it into a gentle suggestion — dropping it makes the decision sound firmer.
    Français

Au-delà de « ou », 还是 devant un verbe scelle le choix que vous préférez après avoir pesé le pour et le contre — « il vaudrait mieux, j'aimerais plutôt (après tout) ». Il aime se terminer par 吧.

    Structure : Subject + 还是 + Verb Phrase + 吧

    after all还是hái shìtomorrow明天míng tiāngo去qù吧ba。

    Allons-y demain après tout.

    you你nǐhad better还是hái shìnot别biégo去qù了le。

Tu ferais mieux de ne pas y aller.

    Retenez : 还是…吧 = « après réflexion, vaut mieux… » — un verdict rendu après y avoir réfléchi. Distinct de 还是 = « ou » (dans les questions) ou « encore ».*/

    Faites attention

    • Le 吧 l'adoucit en une suggestion douce — le supprimer rend la décision plus ferme.

It's cold out — best wear a bit more.

Remember: 最好 = "the best thing would be…" — advice with a soft touch, gentler than 应该 or 得. Negative: 最好别 ("had best not").

    Watch out

    • It's a suggestion, not a rule — for an obligation use 得 / 必须 instead.

    Faites attention

    • C'est une suggestion, pas une règle — pour une obligation, utilisez 得 / 必须 à la place.

    不得不 — « devoir, ne pouvoir s'empêcher de »

    English

不得不 stacks a double negative — "not (不) able to not (得不) do" — into a reluctant, unavoidable "have to." It's more forced and grudging than 必须.

Structure: Subject + 不得不 + Verb

the lift电梯diàn tīagain又yòubroke坏huài了lewe,我们wǒ menhad to不得不bù dé bùclimb爬páthe stairs楼梯lóu tī。

You're so good — I have to admit it.

Remember: 不得不 = "can't NOT do it" (two negatives cancelling to a grudging yes). It shouts no way out; 必须 is the calmer, neutral "must / it's required."

    Watch out

    • Don't miscount the negatives — 不得不去 means "have to go," not "can't go."
    Français

不得不 empile un double négatif — « ne pas (不) pouvoir ne pas (得不) faire » — dans un devoir relucrant et inévitable. C'est plus forcé et réticent que 必须.

Tu es si bon — je dois l'admettre.

Retenez : 不得不 = « ne PAS pouvoir ne pas le faire » (deux négatifs s'annulant pour un oui réticent). Il crie pas de sortie possible ; 必须 est le « doit / c'est requis » plus calme et neutre. */

    Faites attention

    到底 — « au fond / après tout / enfin »

    English

到底 = "all the way to the bottom" — and it digs for the real answer. Three jobs: pressing in a question ("on earth, exactly"), "after all / in the end," and "finally" (like 终于).

    2.17

究竟 — « exactement, au fond » (formel)

    English

究竟 is the more formal twin of 到底 — it sharpens a question hunting for a specific fact (a name, a time, a reason): "exactly, on earth."

Structure: 究竟 + Question Word …

Remember: 究竟 = 到底 in a suit. Same "on earth / exactly" in questions, just a more written, formal register.

    Watch out

    • Both press a question; 究竟 simply sounds more bookish than the everyday 到底.
    Français

    English

The adverb 刚 (or 刚刚) marks an action that happened a short time ago — "just." It sits right before the verb, and with a duration it needs no "ago" word.

    就 + 主语 — « seulement (celui-ci) »

    English

    千万 — « assurez-vous, peu importe quoi »

    English

千万 (literally "thousand ten-thousand") is an urgent plea — "be sure to / whatever you do (don't) …." The huge numbers are the emphasis. It almost always heads a command, paired with 别 / 不要 / 要.

    Structure: 千万 + (别 / 不要 / 要) + Verb Phrase

whatever you do千万qiān wàndon't别biéforget忘wàng了leto bring带dàiyour passport护照hù zhào。

Whatever you do, don't forget your passport.

on the way路上lù shàngdo be sure to千万qiān wàn要yàobe careful小心xiǎo xīn。

Do be careful on the way.

Remember: big numbers = big urgency. 千万 piles "thousand" on "ten-thousand" to mean "I really, really mean it." The go-to shape is 千万别… ("whatever you do, DON'T…").

    Watch out

    • It belongs in pleas and warnings — not a neutral statement.
    Français

千万 (littéralement « mille-dix-mille ») est un appelement urgent — « assure-toi / peu importe ce que tu fais (ne) … ». Les grands nombres sont l'accentuation. Il introduit presque toujours une commande, associé à 别 / 不要 / 要.

    Structure : 千万 + (别 / 不要 / 要) + Verb Phrase

whatever you do千万qiān wàndon't别biéforget忘wàng了leto bring带dàiyour passport护照hù zhào。

Peu importe ce que tu fais, n'oublie pas ton passeport.

on the way路上lù shàngdo be sure to千万qiān wàn要yàobe careful小心xiǎo xīn。

    Fais bien attention en chemin.

Retenez : les grands nombres = une grande urgence. 千万 empile « mille » sur « dix-mille » pour dire « je veux vraiment, vraiment le dire. » La forme par défaut est 千万别… (« peu importe ce que tu fais, NE FAIS PAS… »).

    Faites attention

    • Il convient aux appels et avertissements — pas dans une déclaration neutre.
    2.23

恐怕 — « Je crains (que), probablement »

    English

恐怕 has 恐 ("fear") right in it, and that's the feel: a likely but unwelcome prediction softened with "I'm afraid that, I worry that." It opens the clause, ideally before the subject, often with 要 / 会.

Structure: (Reason,) 恐怕 + Subject + Predicate

today今天jīn tiānI'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàgoing to要yàorain下雨xià yǔ。

I'm afraid it's going to rain today.

    I'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàI我wǒtomorrow明天míng tiāncan't不能bù néngcome来lái。

    I'm afraid I can't come tomorrow.

Remember: 恐怕 hides 恐 (fear) — it's a worried "I'm afraid…" about something unwelcome, never a cheerful guess. Place it before the subject for the most natural ring.

    Watch out

    • For a neutral "probably" (no dread), use 可能 instead.
    Français

恐怕 contient 恐 (« peur ») en lui-même, d'où cette impression : une prédiction probable mais indésirable adoucie par « Je crains que, j'ai peur que. » Il ouvre la proposition, idéalement avant le sujet, souvent avec 要 / 会.

Structure : (Reason,) 恐怕 + Subject + Predicate

today今天jīn tiānI'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàgoing to要yàorain下雨xià yǔ。

Je crains qu'il va pleuvoir aujourd'hui.

    I'm afraid恐怕kǒng pàI我wǒtomorrow明天míng tiāncan't不能bù néngcome来lái。

Je crains de ne pas pouvoir venir demain.

Retenez : 恐怕 cache 恐 (peur) — c'est un « Je crains… » inquiet au sujet de quelque chose indésirable, jamais une devinette joyeuse. Placez-le avant le sujet pour obtenir le son le plus naturel.

    Faites attention

    • Pour un « probablement » neutre (sans angoisse), utilisez 可能.
    2.24

    竟然 — « inattendu, en fait »

    English

竟然 (or just 竟) flags something surprising or hard to believe — "unexpectedly, actually, of all things." It sits after the subject. It's a near-match for 居然, just a touch milder.

Structure: Subject + 竟然 + Predicate

    such a这么zhè mehard难nán的deproblem题tíhe,他tāactually竟然jìng rángot it做zuòright对duì了le。

Such a hard problem — and he actually got it right!

    he他tāunexpectedly竟然jìng rán把bǎthis这zhè件jiànmatter事shìforgot忘wàng了le。

He actually forgot all about it!

Remember: 竟然 = a jaw-drop — "…and yet, of all things, X!" Best rendered "actually / of all things." ≈ 居然 (slightly stronger), opposite of 果然 ("sure enough, as expected").

    Watch out

    • It needs genuine surprise — drop it into a humdrum statement and it sounds off.
    Français

竟然 (ou simplement 竟) signale quelque chose de surprenant ou difficile à croire — « inattendu, en fait, entre toutes les choses. » Il se place après le sujet. C'est un quasi-équivalent de 居然, juste légèrement moins fort.

    Structure : Subject + 竟然 + Predicate

    such a这么zhè mehard难nán的deproblem题tíhe,他tāactually竟然jìng rángot it做zuòright对duì了le。

Un problème si dur — et il l'a résolu en fait !

    he他tāunexpectedly竟然jìng rán把bǎthis这zhè件jiànmatter事shìforgot忘wàng了le。

Il a tout oublié en fait !

Retenez : 竟然 = une bouche bée — « …et pourtant, entre toutes les choses, X ! » Se traduit mieux par « en fait / entre toutes les choses. » ≈ 居然 (légèrement plus fort), opposé à 果然 (« comme prévu, on s'y attendait »).

    Faites attention

    • Il nécessite une vraie surprise — insérez-le dans une déclaration banale et cela sonnera faux.
    2.25

难道 — marqueur de question rhétorique

    English

难道 turns a sentence into a rhetorical question of disbelief — "don't tell me …?, surely you don't …?". It usually closes with 吗 and fishes for agreement, not an answer. English has no single word for it.

    Structure: 难道 + Rhetorical Question + 吗?

don't tell me难道nán dàoyou你nǐreally真的zhēn debelieve相信xiāng xìnhim他tā吗ma?

You don't actually believe him, do you?

    today今天jīn tiānis是shìmy我wǒ的debirthday生日shēng rìdon't tell me,难道nán dàoyou你nǐdon't不bùknow知道zhī dào吗ma?

It's my birthday — don't tell me you forgot?

Remember: 难道 = a built-in "surely not…?!" It marks the whole sentence as rhetorical — you're pressing for the listener to agree, not to inform you. Usually 难道…吗?.

    Watch out

    • Don't answer a 难道 question literally — it's making a point, not seeking facts.
    Français

难道 transforme une phrase en question rhétorique d'incredulité — « dis-moi donc…?, sûrement que tu ne… ? ». Il se termine généralement par 吗 et cherche l'accord, pas une réponse. L'anglais n'a pas de mot unique pour cela.

    Structure : 难道 + Rhetorical Question + 吗?

don't tell me难道nán dàoyou你nǐreally真的zhēn debelieve相信xiāng xìnhim他tā吗ma?

Tu ne crois vraiment pas à ce qu'il dit, si ?

    today今天jīn tiānis是shìmy我wǒ的debirthday生日shēng rìdon't tell me,难道nán dàoyou你nǐdon't不bùknow知道zhī dào吗ma?

C'est mon anniversaire — dis-moi que tu as oublié ?

Retenez : 难道 = un « sûrement pas…?! » intégré. Il marque toute la phrase comme rhétorique — vous appuyez pour que l'interlocuteur soit d'accord, pas pour obtenir des informations. Souvent 难道…吗?.

    Faites attention

    • Ne répondez pas littéralement à une question 难道 — elle fait un point, ne cherche pas des faits.
    2.26

    先 … ,再 … — « d'abord … puis … »

    English

先 … 再 … lines two actions up in sequence — "first A, then B." As in HSK 3, the catch is that 再 here means "(and) then," not "again." Chain longer runs with 然后 / 接着.

    Structure: 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃饭chī fàn。

Wash your hands first, then eat.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Do your homework first, then watch TV.

Remember: in 先…再…, 再 = "and then" (the next stepping stone), not "again." Extend the chain with 然后 / 接着 for three or more steps.

    Watch out

    • Out of this pairing, 再 does mean "again / more" — it's the 先…再… frame that fixes the "then" reading.
    Français

    先 … 再 … aligne deux actions en séquence — « d'abord A, puis B. » Comme en HSK 3, le piège est que 再 signifie ici « (et) puis », pas « encore ». Enchaînez plusieurs étapes avec 然后 / 接着.

    Structure : 先 + Verb 1 ,再 + Verb 2

    first先xiānwash hands洗手xǐ shǒuthen,再zàieat吃饭chī fàn。

Lave-toi les mains d'abord, puis mange.

    you你nǐshould要yàofirst先xiāndo做zuòhomework作业zuò yèthen,再zàiwatch看kànTV电视diàn shì。

Fais tes devoirs d'abord, puis regarde la télé.

    English

Stack 也 ("also") and 都 ("all") to sweep up a whole group as well — "all … too." The order is locked: 也 comes before 都.

Structure: Subject + 也都 + Predicate

    I'm我wǒvery很hěnwell好hǎomy,我wǒ的defamily家人jiā rénall too也都yě dōuvery很hěnwell好hǎo。

The adults like this restaurant, and the kids all do too.

Remember: 也 (also) + 都 (all) in a FIXED order — 也都, never 都也. Think "also-all": the whole group does it too.

    Watch out

    • Both adverbs sit before the verb together; you can't split them around it.
    Français

    Empilez 也 (« aussi ») et 都 (« tous ») pour englober tout un groupe également — « tous … aussi. » L'ordre est fixe : 也 précède 都.

    Structure : Subject + 也都 + Predicate

    挺 + Adjectif + 的 — « plutôt, assez »

    English

挺 … 的 is a laid-back "quite, pretty, rather" — a relaxed, conversational intensifier that almost always wraps up with 的. It's softer than 很 and pops up constantly in everyday chat.

    Structure: 挺 + Adjective + 的

    your你nǐboyfriend男朋友nán péng youpretty挺tǐnghandsome帅shuài的de。

    Your boyfriend is pretty handsome.

    lately最近zuì jìneveryone大家dà jiā都dōuquite挺tǐngbusy忙máng的de。

    Everyone's been quite busy lately.

Remember: 挺 wants its 的 — 挺好的, never bare 挺好. Think of 挺…的 as a matched pair of bookends around the adjective. It's the casual, easygoing "pretty / quite," softer than 很 / 非常.

    Watch out

    • Leave off the 的 and it sounds unfinished to a native ear.
    Français

挺 … 的 est un « plutôt, assez, plutôt » décontracté — un intensificateur détendu et conversationnel qui se termine presque toujours par 的. C'est plus doux que 很 et apparaît constamment dans la parole quotidienne.

    Structure : 挺 + Adjective + 的

    your你nǐboyfriend男朋友nán péng youpretty挺tǐnghandsome帅shuài的de。

Ton petit ami est plutôt beau.

    lately最近zuì jìneveryone大家dà jiā都dōuquite挺tǐngbusy忙máng的de。

…… 什么的 — « et ainsi de suite, etc. »

    English

什么的 rounds off an informal list with a casual wave of the hand — "and so on, and stuff like that." It can even trail a single item when it's obvious what else belongs in the group.

    Structure: Noun 1、Noun 2 (+ Noun 3) + 什么的

    Structure: …… ,不过 ……

于是 — « et ainsi, de ce fait »

    English

于是 chains a cause to the action it triggers — "and so, thereupon." The second event follows straight from the first. It's a storytelling, past-tense word, usually with 了, and often with 就.

    Structure: …… ,于是 …… + 了

    Watch out

    • It belongs to narration of completed events — it pairs with 了 (and often 就), not with future plans.
    Français

    Faites attention

    • Il appartient à la narration d'événements achevés — il s'associe à 了 (et souvent 就), pas à des projets futurs.
    5.3

还有 — « aussi, et un autre truc »

    English

还有 tacks on a further point as an afterthought — "also, plus, and another thing." It tends to open a fresh sentence after a comma or full stop, the spoken "oh, and…".

    Structure: ……。还有,……

Remember: 还有 = "oh, and also…" — the casual afterthought, literally "still have (more to say)." Order-a-coffee energy: one more thing, then one more.

    Watch out

Remember: 再说 = "and what's MORE…" — it adds a reason that clinches what you just said. Don't confuse it with the 再说 in 先…再说 ("do X first, deal with it later").

    Watch out

Retenez : 再说 = « et EN PLUS… » — il ajoute une raison qui confirme ce que vous venez de dire. Ne le confondez pas avec 再说 dans 先…再说 (« fais X d'abord, on verra après »).

    …… 分之 …… — fractions et pourcentages

    English

Chinese builds a fraction back to front: denominator + 分之 + numerator — the bottom number comes first. It fits the language's big-to-small habit (whole first, then the slice). Percentages are just "out of 100" fractions: 百分之 + number.

Structure: Denominator + 分之 + Numerator

My phone's down to five percent.

Remember: bottom first, top last — read 分之 as "out of": 四分之三 = "of four parts (四分), three (之三)" = ¾. Percent is just 百分之 ("out of 100") + the number: 百分之五十 = 50%.

    Watch out

    • ¾ is 四分之三, never 三分之四 — getting the order backwards flips the fraction.
    Français

Les Chinois construisent une fraction de l'arrière vers l'avant : dénominateur + 分之 + numérateur — le numéro du bas arrive en premier. Cela correspond à l'habitude de la langue qui va du tout à la partie (le tout d'abord, puis la tranche). Les pourcentages sont simplement des « sur 100 » : 百分之 + nombre.

    Structure : Denominator + 分之 + Numerator

    知道 … 疑问词 … 吗 ? — intégrer une question dans une question 吗

    English

Here's a structure that looks like two questions but is really one. 吗 can close a clause that embeds a question word — "do you know who / what / where …?" The front carries a verb of knowing (知道, 了解, 认识), and the whole thing stays a plain yes/no question.

    Structure: Confirmation (知道 …) + embedded Question + 吗?

    you你nǐknow知道zhī dàohe他tāis是shìwho谁shéi吗ma?

Do you know who he is?

    she她tādid say说过shuō guoshe她tālives住zhù在zàiwhere哪儿nǎr吗ma?

Did she say where she lives?

Remember: the 吗 makes it yes/no; the 谁 / 哪儿 inside is just part of the embedded clause. "Do you know [who he is]?" — you're asking whether they know, not "who?". Answer 知道 / 不知道.

    Watch out

    • The lead verb is one of knowing/saying: 知道, 了解, 明白, 认识, 说过.
    Français

Voici une structure qui ressemble à deux questions mais qui n'en est qu'une seule. 吗 ferme une clause qui intègre un mot interrogatif — « savez-vous qui / quoi / où … ? ». Le début porte un verbe de connaissance (知道, 了解, 认识), et l'ensemble reste une simple question oui/non.

    Structure : Confirmation (知道 …) + embedded Question + 吗?

    you你nǐknow知道zhī dàohe他tāis是shìwho谁shéi吗ma?

    Sais-tu qui il est ?

    she她tādid say说过shuō guoshe她tālives住zhù在zàiwhere哪儿nǎr吗ma?

A-t-elle dit où elle habite ?

    Rappelez-vous : le 吗 fait que c'est une question oui/non ; le 谁 / 哪儿 à l'intérieur n'est que partie de la clause intégrée. « Sais-tu [qui il est] ? » — vous demandez si ils savent, pas « qui ? ». Répondez par 知道 / 不知道.

    Faites attention

    • Le verbe initial est un verbe de savoir/dire : 知道, 了解, 明白, 认识, 说过.

    … 吧 ,…… ;… 吧 ,…… — peser deux options

    English

Echo 吧 across two options and you lay out a dilemma — "if A …, but if B …." It has an indecisive, no-win ring, and the two options are usually both unappealing.

    Structure: Option 1 + 吧,…… ;Option 2 + 吧,……

    in winter冬天dōng tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàicold冷lěngin summer;夏天xià tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàihot热rè。

If I don't tell him he'll get it wrong; if I do, he'll be upset.

Remember: doubled 吧 = a no-win fork — "do A 吧, downside; do B 吧, downside." Picture a shrug at each branch: whichever you pick, it stings.

    Watch out

    • Both options should carry a drawback — that's what gives the pattern its trapped, can't-win feel.
    Français

Faire écho à 吧 sur deux options et vous présentez une impasse — « si A …, mais si B …. » Cela a une tonalité indécise, sans issue gagnante, et les deux options sont généralement peu attrayantes.

    Structure : Option 1 + 吧,…… ;Option 2 + 吧,……

    in winter冬天dōng tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàicold冷lěngin summer;夏天xià tiāngo去qù吧batoo,太tàihot热rè。

    Rappelez-vous : doubled 吧 = une fourche sans issue gagnante — « fais A 吧, inconvénient ; fais B 吧, inconvénient. » Imaginez un haussement d'épaules à chaque branche : quel que soit votre choix, ça pique.

    Faites attention

Chinese has a dedicated verb for a belief that turned out wrong: 以为. Whatever follows 以为 is the incorrect idea you held — the sentence usually carries a quiet "…but I was wrong."

Structure: Subject + 以为 + (wrong belief)

    I我wǒthought以为yǐ wéihe他tāwas是shìGerman德国人Dé guó rén。

I thought he was German (he isn't).

    don't别biéthink以为yǐ wéiI我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dào。

    Don't think I don't know.

Remember: 以为 = a belief that proved WRONG ("I thought X… turns out not"). For a belief you simply hold, use 觉得 / 想. The giveaway opener: 我还以为… ("I'd assumed (wrongly) that…").

    Watch out

    • Swapping 以为 for 觉得 changes the meaning — 觉得 makes no claim that you were mistaken.
    Français

Le chinois possède un verbe dédié à une croyance qui s'est avérée fausse : 以为. Ce qui suit 以为 correspond à l'idée incorrecte que vous avez eue — la phrase porte généralement un discret « …mais j'avais tort. »

Structure : Subject + 以为 + (wrong belief)

    I我wǒthought以为yǐ wéihe他tāwas是shìGerman德国人Dé guó rén。

Je pensais qu'il était allemand (il ne l'est pas).

    don't别biéthink以为yǐ wéiI我wǒdon't不bùknow知道zhī dào。

Ne pense pas que je ne sache.

Retenez : 以为 = une croyance qui s'est révélée FAUSSE (« Je pensais X… il se trouve que non »). Pour une croyance simplement entretenue, utilisez 觉得 / 想. L'indicateur caractéristique : 我还以为… (« J'avais supposé (à tort) que… »).

    Faites attention

    • Remplacer 以为 par 觉得 change le sens — 觉得 n'affirme pas que vous vous êtes trompé.

    通过 — "traverser; passer"

    English

通过 wears two hats: as a verb, "go through (a place) / pass (an exam)"; as a preposition, "by means of, via."

Structure: 通过 + Place / Exam (verb) · 通过 + Method / Agent ,…… (preposition)

    I我wǒpassed通过tōng guò了lethis这个zhè geexam考试kǎo shì。

    I passed this exam.

    we我们wǒ menthrough通过tōng guòhis他tā的defriend朋友péng youfound找到zhǎo dào了lehim他tā。

We found him through his friend.

Remember: 通过 = "pass through" — through an exam/place (verb: 通过考试) or through a method/middleman (preposition: 通过朋友 "via a friend"). Compare 经过, which leans on "after a process."

    Watch out

    • As a preposition it sets up a means before the main clause: 通过努力,他成功了.
    Français

通过 porte deux chapeaux : en tant que verbe, "passer (un lieu) / réussir (un examen)" ; en tant que préposition, "au moyen de, via".

    Structure : 通过 + Place / Exam (verbe) · 通过 + Method / Agent ,…… (préposition)

    I我wǒpassed通过tōng guò了lethis这个zhè geexam考试kǎo shì。

    J'ai réussi cet examen.

    we我们wǒ menthrough通过tōng guòhis他tā的defriend朋友péng youfound找到zhǎo dào了lehim他tā。

Nous l'avons trouvé grâce à son ami.

Retenez : 通过 = "passer à travers" — à travers un examen/lieu (verbe : 通过考试) ou à travers une méthode/intermédiaire (préposition : 通过朋友 "via un ami"). Comparez avec 经过, qui insiste sur "après un processus".

    Faites attention

    • En tant que préposition, il introduit un moyen avant la proposition principale : 通过努力,他成功了.

    来自 — "venir de"

    English

来自 is one compact verb for a source or origin — "come / originate from." It's more formal than 从 … 来, perfect for introductions, and it stretches to abstract sources too.

Structure: Subject + 来自 + Place / Source

    I我wǒcome from来自lái zìChina中国Zhōng guó。

    I'm from China.

my我wǒ的dethis这个zhè geidea想法xiǎng fǎcomes from来自lái zìeveryday life生活shēng huó。

This idea of mine comes from everyday life.

Remember: 来自 = "comes from" in one tidy word (来 "come" + 自 "from"). Great for intros (我来自…) and abstract origins (灵感来自…, "inspiration comes from…"). Casual version: 从…来.

    Watch out

    • It takes its source directly, with no 从: 来自中国 ✓, not 从来自中国.
    Français

来自 est un verbe compact désignant une source ou une origine — "venir / provenir de." Il est plus formel que 从 … 来, parfait pour les présentations, et s'étend aussi aux sources abstraites.

    Structure : Subject + 来自 + Place / Source

    Je viens de Chine.

my我wǒ的dethis这个zhè geidea想法xiǎng fǎcomes from来自lái zìeveryday life生活shēng huó。

Cette idée de ma part vient de la vie quotidienne.

Retenez : 来自 = "vient de" en un seul mot soigné (来 "venir" + 自 "de"). Idéal pour les présentations (我来自…) et les origines abstraites (灵感来自…, "l'inspiration vient de…"). Version familière : 从…来.

    Faites attention

    • Il prend sa source directement, sans 从 : 来自中国 ✓, pas 从来自中国.

    来 — le verbe "fantôme"

    English

A bare 来 can stand in for a more specific verb — "(let me) do it, your turn, have a go" — when the real action is obvious from context. It's a short phrase ending in 来 (sometimes 吧), usually with 我 or 你.

    Structure: (让 +) Subject + 来 (+ 吧)

    I我wǒdo it来lái吧ba。

    Let me do it.

    you你nǐwrite写xiě得denicely好看hǎo kànyou,你nǐdo it来lái吧ba。

You write nicely — you do it.

Remember: this 来 does NOT mean "come" — it's a placeholder for the obvious verb, like English "I'll get this." 我来 ("I'll do it"), 你来 ("your turn"), 让他自己来 ("let him have a go").

    Watch out

    • Only use it when the real action is clear from context — otherwise name the verb.
    Français

Un 来 nu peut remplacer un verbe plus spécifique — "(laisse-moi) faire, c'est à toi, essaie" — lorsque l'action réelle est évidente du contexte. C'est une courte expression se terminant par 来 (parfois 吧), souvent avec 我 ou 你.

    Structure : (让 +) Subject + 来 (+ 吧)

    I我wǒdo it来lái吧ba。

    Laisse-moi faire.

    you你nǐwrite写xiě得denicely好看hǎo kànyou,你nǐdo it来lái吧ba。

    Tu écris bien — fais-le.

Retenez : ce 来 ne signifie PAS "venir" — c'est un substitut pour le verbe évident, comme l'anglais "I'll get this." 我来 ("je le ferai"), 你来 ("c'est à toi"), 让他自己来 ("laisse-le essayer").

    Faites attention

    • N'utilisez-le que lorsque l'action réelle est claire du contexte — sinon nommez le verbe.

不用 — "ne pas avoir besoin de, inutile"

    English

不用 means "(there's) no need to, don't have to" — it lifts an obligation. The classic trap: the negative of 要 ("need to") is 不用, not 不要 (which means "don't / don't want").

Structure: Subject + 不用 + Verb Phrase

    no need to不用bú yòngworry担心dān xīn。

    No need to worry.

children孩子hái zidon't need to不用bú yòngbuy买mǎia ticket票piào。

Children don't need to buy a ticket.

Remember: 要 ("need to") → 不用 ("needn't"), NOT 不要. 不用 cancels a need; 不要 is a prohibition ("don't"); 不能 = "can't"; 不应该 = "shouldn't." Pick by which one you're denying.

    Watch out

    • 不用谢 ("you're welcome") is literally "no need to thank" — the same 不用.
    Français

不用 signifie "(il n'y a) pas besoin de, ne pas avoir à" — il lève une obligation. Le piège classique : le négatif de 要 ("avoir besoin de") est 不用, pas 不要 (qui signifie "ne pas / ne pas vouloir").

Structure : Subject + 不用 + Verb Phrase

    no need to不用bú yòngworry担心dān xīn。

    Inutile de t'inquiéter.

children孩子hái zidon't need to不用bú yòngbuy买mǎia ticket票piào。

Les enfants n'ont pas besoin d'acheter un billet.

Retenez : 要 ("avoir besoin de") → 不用 ("n'avoir pas à"), PAS 不要. 不用 annule une nécessité ; 不要 est une interdiction ("ne pas") ; 不能 = "ne pas pouvoir" ; 不应该 = "ne pas devoir". Choisissez selon ce que vous niez.

    Faites attention

    • 不用谢 ("de rien") signifie littéralement "pas besoin de remercier" — le même 不用.
    13.2

    得 + Verbe — "devoir, faut"

    English

The auxiliary 得 — read děi here — is a blunt, spoken "have to, must," a practical necessity.

    Structure: Subject + 得 + Verb Phrase

    we我们wǒ menhave to得děigo走zǒu了le。

    We have to go now.

the time时间shí jiāngetting late不早bù zǎo了leI,我wǒhave to得děigo home回家huí jiā了le。

It's getting late — I have to head home.

Remember: 得 = děi = "gotta." Its negative borrows 不用 ("needn't"), not 不得. And mind the reading: this is děi ("must"), a world away from the de of complements (跑得快) or the particles 的 / 地.

    Watch out

    • One character, three readings: děi (must), de (complement marker), dé (得到 "obtain"). Context picks it.
    Français

L'auxiliaire 得 — lu děi ici — est un "faut, dois" direct et oral, une nécessité pratique.

    Structure : Subject + 得 + Verb Phrase

    we我们wǒ menhave to得děigo走zǒu了le。

Il faut que nous y allions maintenant.

the time时间shí jiāngetting late不早bù zǎo了leI,我wǒhave to得děigo home回家huí jiā了le。

Il se fait tard — il faut que je rentre.

Retenez : 得 = děi = "faut bien." Sa négation emprunte 不用 ("pas besoin de"), pas 不得. Et attention à la prononciation : c'est děi ("faut"), loin du de des compléments (跑得快) ou des particules 的 / 地.

    Faites attention

    • Un caractère, trois prononciations : děi (faut), de (marqueur de complément), dé (得到 "obtenir"). Le contexte fait le choix.

    并 + Verbe — "et (aussi)"

    English

Between two verb phrases, 并 links them as "and, and also." It's picky: it joins verbs or clauses (never nouns — that's 和's job), usually two-syllable verbs, with a considered, written ring.

    Structure: Verb Phrase 1 + 并 + Verb Phrase 2

    I我wǒagree with同意tóng yìand并bìngsupport支持zhī chíyour你nǐ的dedecision决定jué dìng。

I agree with and support your decision.

the meeting会议huì yìdiscussed讨论tǎo lùnand并bìngapproved通过tōng guò了lethe plan计划jì huà。

The meeting discussed and approved the plan.

Remember: 并 joins verbs/clauses, 和 joins nouns. "Discussed 并 approved" (verbs) ✓; "tea 和 coffee" (nouns) ✓. 并 is the formal "and" for actions.

    Watch out

    • Don't use 并 between nouns — 茶并咖啡 ✗.
    Français

Entre deux groupes verbaux, 并 les relie comme "et, et aussi." Il est exigeant : il joint des verbes ou des propositions (jamais des noms — c'est le rôle de 和), généralement des verbes disyllabiques, avec une touche soutenue et écrite.

    Structure : Verb Phrase 1 + 并 + Verb Phrase 2

    I我wǒagree with同意tóng yìand并bìngsupport支持zhī chíyour你nǐ的dedecision决定jué dìng。

Je suis d'accord avec et soutiens votre décision.

the meeting会议huì yìdiscussed讨论tǎo lùnand并bìngapproved通过tōng guò了lethe plan计划jì huà。

La réunion a discuté et approuvé le plan.

Retenez : 并 joint des verbes/propositions, 和 joint des noms. "Discuté 并 approuvé" (verbes) ✓ ; "thé 和 café" (noms) ✓. 并 est le "et" formel pour les actions.

    Faites attention

    • N'utilisez pas 并 entre des noms — 茶并咖啡 ✗.

    少 + Verbe — "faire … moins"

    English

少 before a verb means do less of it — the staple of advice and gentle scolding. The bit that flips for English speakers: 少 comes before the verb, where English puts "less" after.

    Structure: 少 + Verb (+ Object)

    please请qǐngless少shǎoadd放fànga bit of点diǎnsalt盐yán。

Use a bit less salt, please.

    less少shǎotalk说shuōnonsense废话fèi huà!

    Quit the babbling!

Remember: 少 / 多 go BEFORE the verb — 少喝水 ("drink less water"), the reverse of English order. It softens a blunt "don't": 少管闲事 ("mind your own business," lit. "meddle less").

    Watch out

    • Never 喝少水 — the amount-word leads: 少喝水, 多吃饭.
    Français

少 devant un verbe signifie faire moins de cette action — c'est la base des conseils et des réprimandes douces. La particularité pour les anglophones : 少 se place avant le verbe, là où l'anglais met "less" après.

    Structure : 少 + Verb (+ Object)

    please请qǐngless少shǎoadd放fànga bit of点diǎnsalt盐yán。

Utilisez un peu moins de sel, s'il vous plaît.

    less少shǎotalk说shuōnonsense废话fèi huà!

    Arrête de baragouiner !

Retenez : 少 / 多 vont AVANT le verbe — 少喝水 ("boire moins d'eau"), l'inverse de l'ordre anglais. Cela adoucit un "ne pas" brut : 少管闲事 ("occupe-toi de tes affaires", litt. "mêle-toi moins").

    Faites attention

    • Jamais 喝少水 — le mot de quantité précède : 少喝水, 多吃饭.
    14.3

    多 + Verbe — "faire … plus"

    English

多 before a verb means do more of it. Like its twin 少, it sits before the verb — exactly where English puts "more" after ("eat more" → 多吃).

    Structure: 多 + Verb (+ Object)

    more多duōeat吃chīa bit点diǎn。

    Eat a bit more.

grandpa爷爷yé yeyou,你nǐshould要yàomore多duōgo out出去chū qùfor walks走走zǒu zou。

Grandpa, you should go out for walks more.

Remember: "eat more" flips to "more-eat" (多吃). 多 and 少 both lead the verb — that front position is the whole trick, and it's the opposite of English.

    Watch out

    • It's the mirror of 少 — both are everyday advice words (多喝水, 少熬夜).
    Français

多 devant un verbe signifie faire plus de cette action. Comme son jumeau 少, il se place avant le verbe — exactement là où l'anglais met "more" après ("eat more" → 多吃).

    Structure : 多 + Verb (+ Object)

    more多duōeat吃chīa bit点diǎn。

    Mange un peu plus.

grandpa爷爷yé yeyou,你nǐshould要yàomore多duōgo out出去chū qùfor walks走走zǒu zou。

Grand-père, tu devrais sortir te promener plus souvent.

Retenez : "manger plus" devient "plus-manger" (多吃). 多 et 少 précèdent tous deux le verbe — cette position antérieure est toute la astuce, et c'est l'inverse de l'anglais.

    Faites attention

    • C'est le miroir de 少 — ce sont tous deux des mots de conseil quotidien (多喝水, 少熬夜).

    Français

值得 indique qu'une action est digne d'être faite — il précède un verbe. Gardez-le à distance de l'argent : 值得 concerne si faire quelque chose rapporte ; pour la valeur monétaire, cherchez 值 pur.

    Verbe + 到 + Temps — "(faire) jusqu'à"

    English

到 after a verb, plus a time or event, works like "until." It often takes 一直 to stress the unbroken stretch. The structural catch: when the verb has an object, you repeat the verb.

    Structure: (一直 +) Verb + 到 + Time / Event · Verb + Obj + Verb + 到 + Time

Remember: with an object, repeat the verb: 写作业写到十二点 (do-homework, do-until-12). A bare 写作业到… is wrong. 一直…到 underlines that the action ran the whole way to that point.

    Watch out

害得 — "causer (des ennuis), rendre (mal)"

    English

害得 (or just 害) pins the blame on something for a bad outcome — "(it) caused / led to (something bad) for me." There's always a note of complaint, and the cause comes before 害得.

Mots dissociables — mots verbe+objet séparables

    English

A surprising number of "verbs" are secretly verb + object pairs — 见面 ("meet" = see-face), 睡觉 ("sleep" = sleep-a-sleep), 帮忙 ("help" = do-a-favour), 结婚 ("marry" = tie-marriage). Other words slot between the two halves, and you can't add another object after the whole word.

Structure: Verb + (insert) + Object

    we我们wǒ menhave met见jiàn过guo面miàn。

    We've met before.

    he他tādid帮bāng了leme我wǒa一个yí gefavour忙máng。

    He did me a favour.

Remember: a separable word is verb + its own object stuck together (见+面). Inserts (了 / 过 / a number-phrase) go between the halves — 睡了一觉, 结过婚 — and you can't bolt a new object on the end: 跟你见面 ✓, never 见面你.

    Watch out

    • This is the classic error: 我想见面你 ✗ → 我想跟你见面 ✓. The "object" slot is already taken by 面.
    Français

Un nombre surprenant de "verbes" sont en réalité des paires verbe + objet — 见面 ("rencontrer" = voir-face), 睡觉 ("dormir" = dormir-sommeil), 帮忙 ("aider" = faire-faveur), 结婚 ("se marier" = lier-mariage). D'autres mots s'insèrent entre les deux moitiés, et vous ne pouvez pas ajouter un autre objet après l'ensemble du mot.

The complement 起来 does three everyday jobs. Literally "up" (站起来 "stand up"); figuratively "gather / put away" (收起来 "tidy away," 存起来 "save up," 藏起来 "hide"); and "start to" (唱起来 "burst into song"). The "gather" sense loves a 把 sentence.

    Structure: Verb + 起来 · 把 + Object + Verb + 起来

Remember: picture 起来 as "up and into action": literal up (站起来), gather up and stow away (收起来, 藏起来), and kick off an action (唱起来, 想起来 "it comes up to mind = recall"). The gather sense pairs with 把.

    Watch out

    • 想起来 ("recall") vs 想出来 ("think up") — the complement changes the meaning; don't swap them.
    Français

Le complément 起来 remplit trois fonctions quotidiennes. Littéralement « en haut » (站起来 « se lever ») ; figurément « rassembler / ranger » (收起来 « ranger », 存起来 « économiser », 藏起来 « cacher ») ; et « commencer à » (唱起来 « éclater en chant »). Le sens « rassembler » aime les phrases avec 把.

    连 … 都 … — "même"

    English

连 … 都 (也) spotlights a surprising case — "even …." The catch English speakers miss: you must keep both parts (English drops to just "even"). The highlighted item — even an object — jumps to the front.

    Structure: 连 + Subject / Object + 都 (+ 不 / 没) + Verb

He eats anything — even dog meat.

Remember: 连 X 都 = "even X" — and you need BOTH words. English keeps only "even"; Chinese frames it as 连 (the surprising item) … 都 (sweeps it in). The item leaps to the front: 连狗肉都吃, never 吃连狗肉.

    Watch out

    • Dropping the 都 breaks it — 连 always needs its 都 / 也 partner.
    Français

连 … 都 (也) met en évidence un cas surprenant — "même …". Le piège que les anglophones manquent : vous devez conserver les deux parties (l'anglais se contente de "even"). L'élément mis en évidence — même un objet — passe en premier plan. (Note: correction syntaxique implicite dans la structure demandée)

    Structure : 连 + Subject / Object + 都 (+ 不 / 没) + Verb

    Mot interrogatif + 都 — "tout / n'importe quel"

    English

A question word + 都 sweeps over all cases — "everyone, anything, anywhere, whenever." Add 不 / 没 and it flips to the total negative: "none, nothing, nowhere."

    Watch out

    Français

Un mot interrogatif + 都 balaye tous les cas — "tout le monde, n'importe quoi, n'importe où, n'importe quand." Ajoutez 不 / 没 et cela s'inverse vers la négation totale : "nul part, rien, personne." (Note: adaptation du texte source pour clarté tout en gardant le sens)

    Structure : Question Word + 都 + Predicate

Remember: it's the 也 / 都 sitting between 一点 and 不 / 没 that makes it absolute — "not even the smallest bit." A bare 一点不 / 一点没 (no 也/都) is noticeably weaker.

    Watch out

    • Keep all the pieces: 一点 + 也/都 + 不/没 — drop the 也/都 and the "at all" force fades.
    Français

一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 est la négation emphatique et absolue — "pas (même) … du tout, pas un millimètre." (Note: adaptation idiomatique pour "not one bit" en français)

    Structure : Subject + 一点 + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Adjective / Verb

Retenez : c'est le 也 / 都 assis entre 一点 et 不 / 没 qui rend cela absolu — "pas même le plus petit morceau." Un 一点不 / 一点没 nu (sans 也/都) est nettement moins fort.

不知道 … 好 — "ne pas savoir ce qui est le mieux"

    English

    Watch out

    • The 好 sits at the very end, after the question phrase — it's "what's best," not "good."

常常 vs 往往 — « souvent » de deux manières

    English

常常 is plain "often" — a frequency, and it can describe future plans. 往往 is "tend(s) to / as a rule" — a pattern or tendency under certain conditions, and it can't describe a future intention.

    he他tāoften常常cháng chángarrives late迟到chí dào。

    He often arrives late.

rich people有钱人yǒu qián réntend to be往往wǎng wǎngrelatively比较bǐ jiàosuperstitious迷信mí xìn。

Rich people tend to be more superstitious.

Remember: 常常 = "often" (a count, future-friendly); 往往 = "tends to" (a law-like pattern, no future). Test it: 我以后会常常运动 ✓ ("I'll exercise often from now on"), but 往往 ✗ there — a tendency can't be a plan.

    Watch out

    • 常常 can shorten to 常 (常去); 往往 can't drop a 往.
    Français

常常 est simplement « often » — une fréquence, et il peut décrire des projets futurs. 往往 est « tend(s) to / as a rule » — un modèle ou une tendance dans certaines conditions, et il ne peut pas décrire une intention future.

    he他tāoften常常cháng chángarrives late迟到chí dào。

    *Il arrive souvent en retard.

rich people有钱人yǒu qián réntend to be往往wǎng wǎngrelatively比较bǐ jiàosuperstitious迷信mí xìn。

*Les riches ont tendance à être plus superstitieux.

Rappelez-vous : 常常 = « souvent » (un décompte, compatible avec le futur) ; 往往 = « a tendance à » (une loi de tendance, pas de futur). Testez-le : 我以后会常常运动 ✓ (« je ferai souvent du sport à partir de maintenant »), mais 往往 ✗ là-bas — une tendance ne peut être un projet.

    Faites attention

    • 常常 peut se raccourcir en 常 (常去) ; 往往 ne peut pas perdre un 往.

刚 vs 刚才 — adverbe vs mot de temps

    English

刚 is an adverb ("just," right before the verb); 刚才 is a time noun ("a moment ago," within the last few minutes) that can stand alone and even modify a noun.

    you你nǐa moment ago刚才gāng cáiwent去qùwhere哪儿nǎr了le?

Where did you go just now?

    I我wǒjust刚gānggot back回来huí lái。

    I just got back.

Remember: 刚 = adverb, glued to the verb (刚到, often no 了); 刚才 = noun, a point in the recent past (stands alone, takes 了, modifies nouns: 刚才的事). Before an adjective, only 刚 / 刚刚 works (天刚晴, "the sky just cleared").

    Watch out

    • 刚才 is a time word — 刚才的事 ("the thing just now") works, but 刚的事 doesn't.
    Français

刚 est un adverbe (« tout à l'heure », juste avant le verbe) ; 刚才 est un nom temporel (« il y a un instant », dans les dernières minutes) qui peut se tenir seul et même modifier un nom.

    you你nǐa moment ago刚才gāng cáiwent去qùwhere哪儿nǎr了le?

    Où êtes-vous allé tout à l'heure ?

    I我wǒjust刚gānggot back回来huí lái。

*Je viens tout juste de rentrer.

Rappelez-vous : 刚 = adverbe, collé au verbe (刚到, souvent sans 了) ; 刚才 = nom, un moment du passé récent (se tient seul, prend 了, modifie les noms : 刚才的事). Devant un adjectif, seul 刚 / 刚刚 fonctionne (天刚晴, « le ciel vient de se dégager »).

    Faites attention

    • 刚才 est un mot de temps — 刚才的事 (« la chose de tout à l'heure ») fonctionne, mais 刚的事 ne fonctionne pas.

    关于 vs 对于 — « à propos de » vs « envers / concernant »

    English

Both point at a person or thing, but from different angles. 关于 introduces the topic / subject matter ("about, on the subject of"). 对于 introduces the target of an attitude or action ("towards, with regard to") — usually with a view or conclusion attached.

about关于guān yúthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tíeveryone,大家dà jiāhas有yǒuwhat什么shén meviews看法kàn fǎ?

On this question, what are everyone's thoughts?

with对于duì yúour我们wǒ men的dework工作gōng zuòthe boss,老板lǎo bǎnvery很hěnsatisfied满意mǎn yì。

The boss is very satisfied with our work.

Remember: 关于 = the TOPIC ("about X"); 对于 = the TARGET of a feeling/action ("towards X"). If a view or reaction is attached (satisfied with, strict about), it's 对于; if you're just naming the subject, it's 关于.

    Watch out

    • Where only a topic is meant, the two overlap (关于/对于 这个问题…) — the split bites when an attitude is involved.
    Français

Les deux pointent vers une personne ou une chose, mais sous des angles différents. 关于 introduit le sujet / le thème (« à propos de, sur le sujet de »). 对于 introduit la cible d'une attitude ou d'une action (« envers, par rapport à ») — généralement avec une opinion ou une conclusion attachée.

about关于guān yúthis这个zhè gequestion问题wèn tíeveryone,大家dà jiāhas有yǒuwhat什么shén meviews看法kàn fǎ?

Sur cette question, quelles sont les idées de chacun ?

with对于duì yúour我们wǒ men的dework工作gōng zuòthe boss,老板lǎo bǎnvery很hěnsatisfied满意mǎn yì。

    English

离 measures the gap between two points — "away from" (for distance). 从 marks a starting point in space or time — "from" (where motion or time begins).

    from从cóngtomorrow明天míng tiānon开始kāi shǐI,我wǒwon't不bùsmoke抽烟chōu yān了le。

Starting from tomorrow, I'm quitting smoking.

My home is very close to the office.

Remember: 离 = the GAP ("how far apart," pairs with 远 / 近); 从 = the START ("where it begins"). 我家离公司很近 ("close to") vs 从明天开始 ("starting tomorrow"). Distance → 离; origin point → 从.

    Watch out

    • 离 needs two endpoints and a distance word (离…远/近); 从 needs a route or a start time (从…走, 从…开始).
    Français

离 mesure l'écart entre deux points — « loin de » (pour la distance). 从 marque un point de départ dans l'espace ou le temps — « à partir de » (où commence le mouvement ou le temps).

    from从cóngtomorrow明天míng tiānon开始kāi shǐI,我wǒwon't不bùsmoke抽烟chōu yān了le。

*À partir de demain, j'arrête de fumer.

    my home我家wǒ jiāfrom离líthe office公司gōng sīvery很hěnclose近jìn。

*Ma maison est très proche du bureau.

    Rappelez-vous : 离 = l'ÉCART (« à quelle distance », associé à 远 / 近) ; 从 = le DÉPART (« où cela commence »). 我家离公司很近 (« proche de ») vs 从明天开始 (« à partir de demain »). Distance → 离 ; point d'origine → 从.

    Faites attention

    反而 vs 相反 — « au contraire » vs « l'inverse »

    English

反而 is an adverb ("instead, on the contrary") that sits before the verb inside one sentence. 相反 is an adjective / conjunction meaning "(the) opposite" — it links or opens a sentence, or describes a thing as opposite.

eating吃chīfruit水果shuǐ guǒnot only不但bú dànno没méibenefit好处hǎo chuinstead,反而fǎn érhas有yǒuharm坏处huài chu

Eating fruit not only does no good — instead it does harm.

    my我wǒ的deidea想法xiǎng fǎ跟gēnhis他tāthe opposite相反xiāng fǎn。

My idea is the opposite of his.

Remember: 反而 = an ADVERB ("instead," before the verb), marking a contrary RESULT; 相反 = "the opposite" (跟…相反, or 相反,… "on the contrary,"). One does a job inside the clause; the other names or links an opposite.

    Watch out

    • You can't swap them: 反而有坏处 ✓ (adverb), 跟他相反 ✓ (adjective) — but not 跟他反而.
    Français

反而 est un adverbe (« au contraire, par contre ») qui précède le verbe dans une même phrase. 相反 est un adjectif / conjonction signifiant « (l') inverse » — il relie ou ouvre une phrase, ou décrit une chose comme étant l'inverse.

eating吃chīfruit水果shuǐ guǒnot only不但bú dànno没méibenefit好处hǎo chuinstead,反而fǎn érhas有yǒuharm坏处huài chu

*Manger des fruits ne fait pas seulement du bien — au contraire, cela nuit.

    my我wǒ的deidea想法xiǎng fǎ跟gēnhis他tāthe opposite相反xiāng fǎn。

    English

Three "certainty" words, three jobs: 肯定 = "definitely / to affirm" (a confident assertion). 确定 = "be sure / confirm" — certainty you've checked. 一定 = "certainly / be sure to" — an expectation or insistence.

    you你nǐsure确定què dìnghe他tāwill会huìcome来lái吗ma?

    Are you sure he'll come?

    he他tādefinitely肯定kěn dìngwill会huìcome来lái。

    He'll definitely come.

Remember: 肯定 asserts a fact confidently; 确定 is certainty you've VERIFIED; 一定 is expectation/insistence. 一定会来 = "will surely come" (expectation); 一定要小心 = "be sure to be careful" (insistence); 你确定吗? = "are you sure (have you checked)?".

    Watch out

    • 确定 is about your own checked certainty; 肯定 asserts the fact itself.
    Français

Trois mots de « certitude », trois fonctions : 肯定 = « définitivement / affirmer » (une affirmation confiante). 确定 = « être sûr / confirmer » — une certitude que vous avez vérifiée. 一定 = « certainement / être certain de » — une expectative ou une insistance.

    you你nǐsure确定què dìnghe他tāwill会huìcome来lái吗ma?

    *Es-tu sûr qu'il viendra ?

    he他tādefinitely肯定kěn dìngwill会huìcome来lái。

    *Il viendra définitivement.

Rappelez-vous : 肯定 affirme un fait avec confiance ; 确定 est une certitude que vous avez VÉRIFIÉE ; 一定 est une expectative/insistance. 一定会来 = « il viendra certes » (expectative) ; 一定要小心 = « soyez bien vigilant » (insistance) ; 你确定吗? = « êtes-vous sûr (avez-vous vérifié) ? »

    Faites attention

    • 确定 concerne votre propre certitude vérifiée ; 肯定 affirme le fait lui-même.

    适合 vs 合适 — « convenir à » vs « approprié »

    English

Same two characters, flipped — and the flip changes the grammar. 适合 is a verb ("to suit") and takes an object. 合适 is an adjective ("suitable") and behaves like other adjectives (很合适, 最合适的).

    this这个zhè gecolour颜色yán sèdoesn't不bùsuit适合shì héhim他tā。

    This colour doesn't suit him.

    black黑色hēi sèis才cái是shìthe most最zuìsuitable合适hé shì的de。

    Black is the most suitable.

Remember: 适合 = VERB + object (适合我, "suits me"); 合适 = ADJECTIVE (很合适, 最合适的, no object). The character order is the giveaway: 适合 takes an object, 合适 describes.

    Watch out

    Faites attention

    以后 vs 的时候 — « après » vs « quand / pendant que »

    English

Both attach to a time or event, but they pin different moments. 以后 means "after (something)" — the action follows it. 的时候 means "when / while (something is happening)" — the action lands during it.

    playing打dǎbasketball篮球lán qiúwhile的时候de shí houwill会huìsweat出汗chū hàn。

    You sweat while playing basketball.

after finishing打完dǎ wánbasketball篮球lán qiúafter以后yǐ hòuneed to要yàoshower洗澡xǐ zǎo。

After finishing basketball, you need to shower.

Remember: 的时候 = DURING (when/while); 以后 = AFTER. The verb tells you which: an ongoing verb takes 的时候 (打篮球的时候), a completed one takes 以后 (打完以后) — note the result word 完 that signals "finished."

    Watch out

    • 吃饭的时候 ("while eating") vs 吃完饭以后 ("after eating") — the 完 is the tell that you've crossed into 以后 territory.
    Français

Les deux s'attachent à un moment ou un événement, mais ils ancrent des moments différents. 以后 signifie « après (quelque chose) » — l'action le suit. 的时候 signifie « quand / pendant que (quelque chose se passe) » — l'action tombe pendant celui-ci.

    playing打dǎbasketball篮球lán qiúwhile的时候de shí houwill会huìsweat出汗chū hàn。

*Vous transpirez lorsque vous jouez au basket.

after finishing打完dǎ wánbasketball篮球lán qiúafter以后yǐ hòuneed to要yàoshower洗澡xǐ zǎo。

*Après avoir fini le basket, vous devez prendre une douche.

Rappelez-vous : 的时候 = PENDANT (quand/tandis que) ; 以后 = APRÈS. Le verbe indique lequel : un verbe en cours prend 的时候 (打篮球的时候), un verbe terminé prend 以后 (打完以后) — notez le mot de résultat 完 qui signifie « terminé. »

    Faites attention

    • 吃饭的时候 (« pendant qu'on mange ») vs 吃完饭以后 (« après avoir mangé ») — le 完 est le signal que vous êtes passé dans la sphère de 以后.
