    1.1

Adjetivo + 得不得了 — "extremadamente, … para morirse"

    English

得不得了 after an adjective cranks it to the extreme — "incredibly …, … to death." On its own 不得了 means "[oh no,] terrible!", but as a complement it just intensifies, good or bad.

    Structure: Adjective + 得不得了

today今天jīn tiāncold冷lěngterribly得不得了de bù dé liǎohow,怎么zěn mecan会huìso这么zhè mecold冷lěng?

It's terribly cold today — how can it be this cold?

the promotion升职shēng zhímade让rànghim他tāhappy高兴gāo xìngextremely得不得了de bù dé liǎo。

Getting promoted made him over the moon.

Remember: 得不得了 = "…like crazy." It swings both ways — 高兴得不得了 (over the moon) and 累得不得了 (dead on my feet) — and hits harder than 很 or 非常.

    Watch out

    • It needs the 得: 高兴得不得了, not 高兴不得了.

the promotion升职shēng zhímade让rànghim他tāhappy高兴gāo xìngextremely得不得了de bù dé liǎo。

El ascenso le dejó más que feliz.

Recuerda: 得不得了 = "…como loco/a." Funciona en ambos sentidos: 高兴得不得了 (más que feliz) y 累得不得了 (agotado/a hasta la muerte), e intensifica más que 很 o 非常.

    Precaución

    • Necesita el 得: 高兴得不得了, no 高兴不得了.
    1.2

Adjetivo + 得很 — "muy, realmente"

    English

得很 after an adjective is a casual, emphatic "very, really" — a relaxed alternative to fronting 很, and a touch stronger.

    Structure: Adjective + 得很

this这个zhè geplace地方dì fanggorgeous漂亮piào liangreally得很de hěnrecommend,推荐tuī jiànyou你nǐgo去qù。

This place is gorgeous — I really recommend you visit.

    don't别biéworry担心dān xīnthis,这次zhè cìexam考试kǎo shìeasy简单jiǎn dānreally得很de hěn。

Don't worry — this exam is dead easy.

Remember: the intensifier TRAILS the adjective: 好得很 (not 很好得很). It's a casual, slightly stronger swap for a front 很 — "好得很" lands like "really good, honestly."

    Watch out

    • Don't double up — pick a front 很 or a trailing 得很, never both.
    Español

得很 después de un adjetivo es una forma coloquial y enfática de decir "muy, realmente": una alternativa relajada a colocar 很 al principio, y ligeramente más fuerte.

    Estructura: Adjective + 得很

this这个zhè geplace地方dì fanggorgeous漂亮piào liangreally得很de hěnrecommend,推荐tuī jiànyou你nǐgo去qù。

    English

Tag 了(一)点儿 onto an adjective to say something is a touch too much — "a bit too …." It's softer than 太, so it's the polite way to grumble.

    Structure: Adjective + 了 + (一)点儿

this这件zhè jiànshirt衬衫chèn shānsmall小xiǎo了lea bit too点儿diǎnrI,我wǒwant想xiǎngto swap换huànit一件yí jiàn。

This shirt's a bit too small — I'd like to swap it.

that那个nà geplace地方dì fangfrom离límy home我家wǒ jiāfar远yuǎn了lea bit too一点儿yì diǎnr。

That place is a little too far from my home.

Remember: Adj + 了点儿 = "a bit TOO …" — a gentle complaint, softer than 太. Don't confuse it with 有点儿 + Adj ("a bit …," 有点儿大), which sits before the adjective.

    Watch out

    • Position flips the feel: 有点儿大 ("a bit big," before) vs 大了点儿 ("a bit too big," after).
    Español

Añade 了(一)点儿 a un adjetivo para indicar que algo es un pelín demasiado: "un poco demasiado …". Es más suave que 太, por lo que es la forma educada de quejarse.

    Estructura: Adjective + 了 + (一)点儿

this这件zhè jiànshirt衬衫chèn shānsmall小xiǎo了lea bit too点儿diǎnrI,我wǒwant想xiǎngto swap换huànit一件yí jiàn。

Esta camisa es un poco demasiado pequeña — me gustaría cambiarla.

that那个nà geplace地方dì fangfrom离límy home我家wǒ jiāfar远yuǎn了lea bit too一点儿yì diǎnr。

Ese lugar está un poco demasiado lejos de mi casa.

Recuerda: Adj + 了点儿 = "un poco DEMASIADO …" — una queja suave, más ligera que 太. No lo confundas con 有点儿 + Adj ("un poco …", 有点儿大), que va antes del adjetivo.

    Precaución

    • El orden cambia el matiz: 有点儿大 ("un poco grande", antes) vs 大了点儿 ("un poco demasiado grande", después).
    1.4

有的是 + Sustantivo — "tener plenty de"

    English

有的是 means there's no shortage of something — "have plenty of, have all the … you need." It's emphatic, sometimes a touch boastful. Note: it's one fixed phrase, not 有的 ("some") + 是.

Structure: Subject + 有的是 + Noun

don't别biérush急jíwe,我们wǒ menhave plenty of有的是yǒu de shìtime时间shí jiān。

Don't rush — we've all the time in the world.

his他tādad爸bàis是shìa big boss大老板dà lǎo bǎnhas plenty of,有的是yǒu de shìmoney钱qián。

His dad's a big boss — he's got money to burn.

Remember: 有的是 = "got loads of" — confident, even boastful, far stronger than 有很多. It's a single fixed phrase — don't read it as 有的 ("some") + 是.

    Watch out

    • It takes a bare noun: 有的是时间 / 钱 / 人 — no measure word needed.
    Español

有的是 significa que no falta nada de algo: "tener plenty de, tener todo lo … que necesites". Es enfático, a veces un poco presumido. Nota: es una frase fija, no 有的 ("algunos") + 是.

Estructura: Subject + 有的是 + Noun

don't别biérush急jíwe,我们wǒ menhave plenty of有的是yǒu de shìtime时间shí jiān。

No te apresures — tenemos todo el tiempo del mundo.

his他tādad爸bàis是shìa big boss大老板dà lǎo bǎnhas plenty of,有的是yǒu de shìmoney钱qián。

Su papá es un gran jefe — tiene dinero de sobra.

Recuerda: 有的是 = "tiene montones de" — seguro, incluso un poco presumido, mucho más fuerte que 有很多. Es una frase fija única — no la interpretes como 有的 ("algunos") + 是.

    Precaución

    • Va seguido de un sustantivo sin clasificador: 有的是时间 / 钱 / 人 — no se necesita clasificador numérico.
  • 2 Adverbs · ⁨Adverbios⁩
    2.1

    都 (avanzado) — "incluso / ya / dado que"

    English

Beyond "all," 都 moonlights in three ways: "even (to the point that)" (= 甚至); "already" (with a time, plus 了); and a tone of complaint ("now that … !").

    Structure: Subject + 都 + Predicate

    he他tāupset难过nán guò得deeven都dōucried哭kū了le。

He was so upset he even cried.

    already都dōumidnight半夜bàn yè了leyou,你nǐhow come怎么zěn mestill还háinot不bùasleep睡shuì?

It's the middle of the night already — why aren't you asleep?

Remember: three side-jobs for 都: "even" (= 甚至: 难过得都哭了), "already" (time + 了: 都半夜了), and a grumble ("now that…!", 都怪你 "it's all your fault").

    Watch out

    • The "already" sense needs a time phrase and a closing 了 — 都十点了.
    Español

Más allá de "todo", 都 cumple tres funciones adicionales: "incluso (hasta el punto de)" (= 甚至); "ya" (con una expresión de tiempo, más 了); y un tono de queja ("¡dado que…!").

    Estructura: Subject + 都 + Predicate

    he他tāupset难过nán guò得deeven都dōucried哭kū了le。

Estaba tan triste que incluso lloró.

    already都dōumidnight半夜bàn yè了leyou,你nǐhow come怎么zěn mestill还háinot不bùasleep睡shuì?

Ya es media noche — ¿por qué no duermes?

Recuerda: tres funciones secundarias para 都: "incluso" (= 甚至: 难过得都哭了), "ya" (tiempo + 了: 都半夜了) y una queja ("¡dado que…!", 都怪你 "es toda tu culpa").

    Precaución

    • El sentido de "ya" necesita una expresión de tiempo y un 了 final — 都十点了.
    2.2

    还 … 呢 (avanzado) — sarcasmo y reproche

    English

还 + predicate + 呢 drips with surprise, sarcasm, or reproach — "some … you are!, and you call yourself …!" It flags the gap between claim and reality.

    Structure: Subject + 还 + Predicate / Noun + 呢

    some还hái"good friend"好朋友hǎo péng you呢neevery day,天天tiān tiāntalks说shuōmy我wǒbehind my back坏话huài huà。

Some "good friend" — bad-mouthing me every day.

and he还háistudied abroad留过学liú guo xué呢nehis English,英语Yīng yǔthis这么zhè mebad差chà!

He even studied abroad, yet his English is this bad!

Remember: 还 X 呢 = "call yourself an X?!" — a sarcastic jab at the mismatch between the label and the reality. Almost always sealed with 呢, said with an eye-roll.

    Watch out

    • Tone is everything — without the mocking delivery it just reads as plain 还 ("still").
    Español

还 + predicado + 呢 impregna la frase de sorpresa, sarcasmo o reproche — "¡qué tal..., y te dices...!". Señala la brecha entre lo afirmado y la realidad.

    Estructura: Subject + 还 + Predicate / Noun + 呢

    some还hái"good friend"好朋友hǎo péng you呢neevery day,天天tiān tiāntalks说shuōmy我wǒbehind my back坏话huài huà。

Qué "amigo/a" — hablando mal de mí todos los días.

and he还háistudied abroad留过学liú guo xué呢nehis English,英语Yīng yǔthis这么zhè mebad差chà!

Incluso estudió en el extranjero, ¡pero su inglés es tan malo!

Recuerda: 还 X 呢 = "¿te llamas X?!" — un puñalada sarcástica a la discrepancia entre la etiqueta y la realidad. Casi siempre se cierra con 呢, dicho con los ojos en blanco.

    Precaución

    • El tono lo es todo — sin la entonación burlona, simplemente se lee como 还 ("todavía").
    2.3

总 (avanzado) — "seguro, al final"

    English

Beyond "always," 总 paired with 会 / 得 / 要 / 能 states something concrete and inevitable — "is bound to, will (in the end), has to." It can't sit directly after the verb.

    Structure: 总 + 会 / 得 / 要 / 能 + Verb Phrase (+ 的 / 吧)

here这里zhè lǐis是shìhis他tāhome家jiāhe,他tāis bound to总zǒng会huìcome back回来huí lái的de。

This is his home — he's bound to come back.

we咱们zán menhave got to总zǒng得děithink of想xiǎng个gesome plan办法bàn fǎ吧ba。

We've got to come up with some kind of solution.

Remember: 总 + 会/得/要/能 = "bound to / has got to." 总会回来的 ("bound to come back"), 总得想办法 ("have got to find a way") — a settled sense of inevitability.

    Watch out

    • Pair it with an auxiliary — 总 can't sit bare right before a main verb here.
    Español

Más allá de "siempre", 总 combinado con 会 / 得 / 要 / 能 afirma algo concreto e inevitable — "seguro, acabará por (al final), tiene que". No puede ir directamente después del verbo.

    Estructura: 总 + 会 / 得 / 要 / 能 + Verb Phrase (+ 的 / 吧)

here这里zhè lǐis是shìhis他tāhome家jiāhe,他tāis bound to总zǒng会huìcome back回来huí lái的de。

Esta es su casa — seguro volverá.

we咱们zán menhave got to总zǒng得děithink of想xiǎng个gesome plan办法bàn fǎ吧ba。

Tenemos que buscar algún tipo de solución.

Recuerda: 总 + 会/得/要/能 = "seguro / tenemos que." 总会回来的 ("seguro volverá"), 总得想办法 ("tenemos que buscar una manera") — una sensación establecida de inevitabilidad.

    Precaución

    • Combínalo con un auxiliar — aquí 总 no puede ir desnudo justo antes de un verbo principal.
    2.4

    毕竟 — "después de todo"

    English

毕竟 reaches for a basic fact to justify a judgement — "after all, when all's said and done." At home in speech and writing alike.

    Structure: …… ,毕竟 …… · 毕竟 ……

    don't别biéscold骂màhim他tā了lehe,他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngis是shìa child孩子hái zi。

Stop scolding him — he's only a kid, after all.

    after all毕竟bì jìngit's是shìwinter冬天dōng tiānmore,多duōwear穿chuān点diǎn吧ba。

It's winter, after all — dress more warmly.

Remember: 毕竟 = "after all" — it pulls out an undeniable fact you shouldn't forget, to excuse or explain (他毕竟是孩子, "he's only a child, after all").

    Watch out

    • It justifies, it doesn't conclude — pair it with the fact, not the result.
    Español

毕竟 apela a un hecho básico para justificar un juicio — "después de todo, cuando todo ha sido dicho y hecho". Se usa tanto en habla como en escritura.

    Estructura: …… ,毕竟 …… · 毕竟 ……

    don't别biéscold骂màhim他tā了lehe,他tāafter all毕竟bì jìngis是shìa child孩子hái zi。

Deja de regañarlo — es solo un niño, después de todo.

    after all毕竟bì jìngit's是shìwinter冬天dōng tiānmore,多duōwear穿chuān点diǎn吧ba。

Es invierno, después de todo — ponte más ropa.

Recuerda: 毕竟 = "después de todo" — extrae un hecho innegable que no debes olvidar, para excusar o explicar (他毕竟是孩子, "es solo un niño, después de todo").

    Precaución

    • Justifica, pero no concluye — combínalo con el hecho, no con el resultado.
    2.5

差点没 + verbo — "casi no"

    English

差点没 is 差点 + 没 — and for a desired result it flips to good news: you nearly failed but pulled it off. Read the 没 as part of the verb: "almost didn't [verb]." No 了 after.

    Structure: Subject + 差点 + 没 + Verb Phrase

    I我wǒalmost差点chà diǎndidn't没méicatch赶上gǎn shàngthe train火车huǒ chē。

I almost missed the train (but caught it).

    he他tābarely差点chà diǎn没méipassed通过tōng guòthe exam考试kǎo shì。

    He barely passed the exam.

Remember: for a wanted outcome, 差点没 = "nearly failed, but made it" (差点没赶上 = caught it!). For an unwanted one, plain 差点 (no 没) = "nearly happened, didn't" (差点迟到 = wasn't late). The 没 with a good result is the twist.

    Watch out

    • It's the classic exam trap — 差点没赶上 means you did catch it, despite the 没.
    Español

差点没 es 差点 + 没 — y para un resultado deseado invierte el sentido a buenas noticias: casi fracasa, pero lo logra. Lee 没 como parte del verbo: "casi no [verbo]". Sin 了 después.

    Estructura: Subject + 差点 + 没 + Verb Phrase

    I我wǒalmost差点chà diǎndidn't没méicatch赶上gǎn shàngthe train火车huǒ chē。

Casi pierdo el tren (pero lo atrapé).

    he他tābarely差点chà diǎn没méipassed通过tōng guòthe exam考试kǎo shì。

    Casi aprueba el examen.

Recuerda: para un resultado deseado, 差点没 = "casi falla, pero lo logra" (差点没赶上 = lo atrapa!). Para uno indeseado, 差点 simple (sin 没) = "casi ocurre, pero no" (差点迟到 = no llegó tarde). El 没 con un buen resultado es la trampa.

    Precaución

    • Es la clásica trampa de examen — 差点没赶上 significa que sí lo atrapó, a pesar del 没.
    2.6

反正 — "de todas formas, en cualquier caso"

    English

反正 sweeps the alternatives off the table — "anyway, regardless, either way." Whatever the options, the result stands. It often follows a comma and teams up with 不管.

    Structure: [Disregarded situation] ,反正 ……

    you你nǐbelieve信xìnor not不bù信xìnanyway,反正fǎn zhèngI我wǒdo信xìn了le。

Believe it or not — anyway, I do.

    however不管bù guǎnfar多duōit is远yuǎnanyway,反正fǎn zhèngI我wǒwill要yàogo去qù。

However far it is, I'm going anyway.

Remember: 反正 = "either way, my mind's made up." It brushes the options aside — the outcome doesn't depend on them. It pairs naturally with 不管 / 无论 ("no matter…, 反正…").

    Watch out

    • It signals a settled decision — don't use it where the choice genuinely matters.
    Español

反正 descarta las alternativas — "de todas formas, sin importar, sea como sea". Cualquiera que sean las opciones, el resultado permanece. A menudo sigue a una coma y se une con 不管.

    Estructura: [Disregarded situation] ,反正 ……

    you你nǐbelieve信xìnor not不bù信xìnanyway,反正fǎn zhèngI我wǒdo信xìn了le。

Creelo o no — de todas formas, sí lo creo.

    however不管bù guǎnfar多duōit is远yuǎnanyway,反正fǎn zhèngI我wǒwill要yàogo去qù。

No importa cuán lejos esté, iré de todas formas.

Recuerda: 反正 = "sea como sea, mi mente está decidida." Descarta las opciones — el resultado no depende de ellas. Se une naturalmente con 不管 / 无论 ("no importa…, 反正…").

    Precaución

    • Señala una decisión tomada — no lo uses donde la elección realmente importe.
    2.7

尽量 + verbo — "todo lo posible"

    English

尽量 means push something to the limit of what you can — "as much as possible, do one's best to." It sits before a verb or adjective.

Structure: 尽量 + Verb / Adjective

    I我wǒwill会huìdo my best to尽量jǐn liànghelp帮bāngyou你nǐ。

I'll do my best to help you.

    please请qǐngas much as possible尽量jǐn liàngearly早zǎo点diǎncome来lái。

Please come as early as you can.

Remember: 尽 (exhaust) + 量 (amount) = "give it all you've got." It promises effort within limits — "I'll do what I can." 尽量早点来 = "come as early as you can manage."

    Watch out

    • It's "as much as possible," not a guarantee — it quietly admits there's a limit.
    Español

尽量 significa empujar algo hasta el límite de lo que puedes hacer — "todo lo posible, hacer lo máximo". Va antes de un verbo o adjetivo.

Estructura: 尽量 + Verb / Adjective

    I我wǒwill会huìdo my best to尽量jǐn liànghelp帮bāngyou你nǐ。

Haré todo lo posible para ayudarte.

    please请qǐngas much as possible尽量jǐn liàngearly早zǎo点diǎncome来lái。

Por favor, ven lo antes posible.

Recuerda: 尽 (agotar) + 量 (cantidad) = "darlo todo." Promete esfuerzo dentro de límites — "haré lo que pueda." 尽量早点来 = "ven tan temprano como puedas."

    Precaución

    • Es "todo lo posible", no una garantía — admite silenciosamente que hay un límite.
    2.8

    互相 + verbo — "mutuamente"

    English

互相 marks a two-way action — "(do to) each other, mutually." It usually leads a two-syllable verb; a one-syllable verb needs more material after it.

    Structure: 互相 + Verb

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāieach other互相hù xiānghelp帮助bāng zhù。

    We should help each other.

classmates同学tóng xuéamong之间zhī jiānshould要yàoone another互相hù xiāngrespect尊重zūn zhòng。

    Classmates should respect one another.

Remember: 互相 = "mutually, each other" — a back-and-forth action, usually with a two-syllable verb: 互相帮助, 互相了解, 互相尊重.

    Watch out

    • A one-syllable verb after 互相 feels bare — prefer the two-syllable form (互相帮助, not 互相帮).
    Español

互相 marca una acción bidireccional — "(hacer a) mutuamente". Generalmente precede a un verbo de dos sílabas; un verbo de una sílaba necesita más material después.

    Estructura: 互相 + Verb

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāieach other互相hù xiānghelp帮助bāng zhù。

    Deberíamos ayudarnos mutuamente.

classmates同学tóng xuéamong之间zhī jiānshould要yàoone another互相hù xiāngrespect尊重zūn zhòng。

    Los compañeros deberían respetarse mutuamente.

Recuerda: 互相 = "mutuamente, entre sí" — una acción de ida y vuelta, generalmente con un verbo de dos sílabas: 互相帮助, 互相了解, 互相尊重.

    Precaución

    • Un verbo de una sílaba después de 互相 se siente vacío — prefiere la forma de dos sílabas (互相帮助, no 互相帮).
    2.9

尽管 + verbo — "siéntase libre de"

    English

Here 尽管 means "feel free to, go right ahead" — urging someone not to hold back. (A completely different sense from 尽管 = "although.")

    Structure: 尽管 + Verb

if you have有yǒuany什么shén mequestions问题wèn tífeel free to尽管jǐn guǎnask问wèn。

Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

if you need有yǒuany-什么shén mething事shìdon't hesitate to尽管jǐn guǎncome to找zhǎome我wǒ。

Don't hesitate to come to me if you need anything.

Remember: this 尽管 = "go right ahead, don't hold back" (有问题尽管问) — not the "although" of 尽管…但是…. Same word, two unrelated jobs; context picks.

    Watch out

    • It's encouragement, so it leads a bare verb — don't pair it with 但是 here.
    Español

Aquí 尽管 significa "siéntase libre de, adelante" — animando a alguien a no contenerse. (Un significado completamente diferente a 尽管 = "aunque.")

    Estructura: 尽管 + Verb

if you have有yǒuany什么shén mequestions问题wèn tífeel free to尽管jǐn guǎnask问wèn。

Siéntase libre de preguntar si tiene alguna pregunta.

if you need有yǒuany-什么shén mething事shìdon't hesitate to尽管jǐn guǎncome to找zhǎome我wǒ。

No dude en venir conmigo si necesita algo.

Recuerda: este 尽管 = "adelante, no se contenga" (有问题尽管问) — no el "aunque" de 尽管…但是…. Misma palabra, dos trabajos no relacionados; el contexto decide.

    Precaución

    • Es un estímulo, así que precede a un verbo desnudo — no lo combines con 但是 aquí.
    2.10

干脆 + verbo — "simplemente (hazlo), mejor así"

    English

干脆 proposes a clean, decisive way out of a fiddly spot — "might as well, just (do this)." The feeling: stop overthinking and just.

Structure: Subject + 干脆 + Verb Phrase

at home家里jiā lǐnothing什么shén me都dōuthere is没有méi yǒulet's just,干脆gān cuìgo out出去chū qùto eat吃chī吧ba。

There's nothing at home — let's just eat out.

this这zhècomputer电脑diàn nǎoagain又yòubroke坏huài了lemight as well,干脆gān cuìbuy买mǎia台táinew one新的xīn de吧ba。

This computer broke again — might as well buy a new one.

Remember: 干脆 = "just do it / might as well" — it cuts the dithering and picks the cleanest, most decisive option (干脆买个新的吧).

    Watch out

    • It's a decisive suggestion — it usually closes with 吧.
    Español

干脆 propone una salida limpia y decidida de una situación complicada — "mejor así, simplemente (haz esto)". La sensación: deja de pensar demasiado y simplemente.

Estructura: Subject + 干脆 + Verb Phrase

at home家里jiā lǐnothing什么shén me都dōuthere is没有méi yǒulet's just,干脆gān cuìgo out出去chū qùto eat吃chī吧ba。

No hay nada en casa — salgamos a comer.

this这zhècomputer电脑diàn nǎoagain又yòubroke坏huài了lemight as well,干脆gān cuìbuy买mǎia台táinew one新的xīn de吧ba。

Esta computadora se rompió otra vez — mejor compramos una nueva.

Recuerda: 干脆 = "simplemente hazlo / mejor así" — corta el titubeo y elige la opción más limpia y decidida (干脆买个新的吧).

    Precaución

    • Es una sugerencia decisiva — generalmente termina con 吧.
    2.11

    再也不 + 不 / 没 … 了 — "nunca más"

    English

再也不 / 没 … 了 slams the door — "never … again." The final 了 (change of state) seals the determination or the settled fact.

    Structure: Subject + 再也 + 不 / 没 + Verb Phrase + 了

    I我wǒnever again再也zài yě不bùwant to想xiǎngsee看到kàn dàoyou你nǐ了le!

I never want to see you again!

    he他tāleft走zǒu了lenever,再也zài yědid没méicome back回来huí lái。

He left and never came back.

Remember: 再也不…了 = "never AGAIN" (future); 再也没…了 = "never did again" (past). The closing 了 slams the door shut on it.

    Watch out

    • Match the negative to the time: future intention → 不; past fact → 没.
    Español

再也不 / 没 … 了 cierra la puerta — "nunca … más". El 了 final (cambio de estado) sella la determinación o el hecho establecido.

    Estructura: Subject + 再也 + 不 / 没 + Verb Phrase + 了

    ¡Nunca más quiero verte!

    he他tāleft走zǒu了lenever,再也zài yědid没méicome back回来huí lái。

Recuerda: 再也不…了 = "NUNCA MÁS" (futuro); 再也没…了 = "nunca más lo hizo" (pasado). El 了 final cierra la puerta herméticamente.

    Precaución

    • Coincide la negación con el tiempo: intención futura → 不; hecho pasado → 没.

    曾经 + verbo + 过 — "una vez, anteriormente"

    English

曾经 plants an experience firmly in the past — "once (upon a time), formerly, ever." It usually pairs with 过. To negate, use the formal 不曾 / 未曾 — never 没曾经.

    Structure: Subject + 曾经 + Verb + 过 · 曾经 + 是 / 在 / 有 …

    he他tāonce曾经céng jīngwas是shìmy我wǒboss老板lǎo bǎn。

    He was once my boss.

    We once went there together.

Remember: 曾经…过 = "once, formerly" — a closed chapter in the past. The negative is the formal 不曾 / 未曾, never 没曾经. With 是 / 在 / 有, drop the 过 (曾经是…).

    Watch out

    • 曾经 is more written/weighty than a plain past with 过 — reserve it for "once upon a time" distance.
    Español

    Watch out

    • Keep it for two-syllable verbs in a formal register — in casual speech you'd use 一再 or 老是.
    Español

    Watch out

    • It's for hyperbole — drop it into a measured statement and it sounds overcooked.
    Español

Structure: Subject + Verb Phrase 1 ,顺便 + Verb Phrase 2

    Watch out

    • The two actions must genuinely fit together — 顺便 implies no extra effort.
    Español

顺便 añade una acción secundaria y conveniente — "de paso, mientras estás ahí, sobre la marcha". 顺便说一下 / 顺便问一下 = "por cierto".

Estructura: Subject + Verb Phrase 1 ,顺便 + Verb Phrase 2

    Precaución

    • Las dos acciones deben encajar genuinamente — 顺便 implica sin esfuerzo extra.

    English

再不 … 就 … warns of a closing window — "act now, or else." It's literally future 再 + 就 ("then"), and it carries urgency even without 现在.

Remember: 再不…就…了 = "if you don't … NOW, then …!" — a ticking-clock warning with an implied "now." 再不走就迟到了 ("if we don't go now, we'll be late").

    Watch out

    • Different from the "again" 再 — here 再不 = "(if) not any longer / not now."
    Español

Si no trabajas duro ahora, no aprobarás.

Recuerda: 再不…就…了 = "si no … AHORA, entonces…!" — una advertencia de reloj de arena con un "ahora" implícito. 再不走就迟到了 ("si no nos vamos ahora, llegaremos tarde").

    Precaución

    • Diferente al 再 de "de nuevo" — aquí 再不 = "(si) no más / no ahora".
    2.17

    好(不)容易 + 才 — "con gran dificultad"

    English

A genuine head-scratcher: 好容易 and 好不容易 mean the same thing — "with great effort, finally managed to (after a struggle)." The 不 is not a negative here. It usually pairs with 才.

    Structure: Subject + 好(不)容易 + 才 + Result

I我wǒafter a real struggle好不容易hǎo bù róng yì才cáigot买到mǎi dàotickets票piào。

I only got tickets after a real struggle.

I finally got downtown — then realised I'd left my phone.

Remember: 好容易 = 好不容易 — both mean "only just managed, after a real struggle." That 不 is a red herring, not a negative. Both pair with 才 (好不容易才买到票).

    Watch out

    • Don't "fix" the 不 — 好不容易才到 means it was hard to arrive, not easy.
    Español

Un verdadero rompecabezas: 好容易 y 好不容易 significan lo mismo — "con gran esfuerzo, finalmente logré (después de luchar)". El 不 no es una negación aquí. Generalmente se combina con 才.

    Estructura: Subject + 好(不)容易 + 才 + Result

I我wǒafter a real struggle好不容易hǎo bù róng yì才cáigot买到mǎi dàotickets票piào。

Solo logré entradas después de una lucha real.

Finalmente llegué al centro — y me di cuenta de que había dejado el móvil.

Recuerda: 好容易 = 好不容易 — ambos significan "solo logró, después de una lucha real". Ese 不 es una señal falsa, no una negación. Ambos se combinan con 才 (好不容易才买到票).

    Precaución

    • No "corrijas" el 不 — 好不容易才到 significa que fue difícil llegar, no fácil.

白 + verbo — "en vano, sin motivo"

    English

白 before a (usually one-syllable) verb means the effort was wasted — "(did) in vain, for nothing." It often takes 了. (白 can also mean "for free.")

    Structure: 白 + Verb (+ 了)

    he他tādidn't没méicome来láiI,我wǒin vain白báiwaited等děng了lean一个yí gehour小时xiǎo shí。

Wasted a hundred kuai — these clothes can't even be worn.

Remember: 白 + verb = effort that drew a BLANK — 白等 (waited for nothing), 白跑 (a wasted trip), 白花钱 (money down the drain). 白 also means "for free" (白吃白住) — context tells which.

    Watch out

    • Usually one-syllable verbs: 白跑, 白等, 白做, 白花.
    Español

白 antes de un (generalmente verbo de una sílaba) significa que el esfuerzo fue perdido — "(hizo) en vano, sin motivo". A menudo lleva 了. (白 también puede significar "gratis".)

    Estructura: 白 + Verb (+ 了)

    he他tādidn't没méicome来láiI,我wǒin vain白báiwaited等děng了lean一个yí gehour小时xiǎo shí。

Gasté cien yuanes en vano — esta ropa ni siquiera sirve para usar.

Recuerda: 白 + verbo = esfuerzo que dio en BLANCO — 白等 (esperar en vano), 白跑 (un viaje perdido), 白花钱 (dinero tirado). 白 también significa "gratis" (白吃白住) — el contexto indica cuál.

    Precaución

    • Generalmente verbos de una sílaba: 白跑, 白等, 白做, 白花.

    动词 + 了 + 又 + 动词 — "una y otra vez (en el pasado)"

    English

    Repeat a single-syllable verb around 了 … 又 … to paint a drawn-out, repeated past action — "…ed and …ed." It's often chased by 还是 / 就是 ("but still …").

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + 又 + (same) Verb ,(还是 / 就是) ……

    this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒlooked看kàn了leand又yòulooked看kànstill,还是hái shìdon't不bùrecognise认识rèn shi。

He thought it over and over, and in the end still didn't go.

Remember: V了又V = "…ed and …ed (and still…)" — a single-syllable verb worn down by repetition (看了又看, 想了又想). The 了 sits after the first verb; 还是 / 就是 often follows to say nothing changed.

    Watch out

    • Single-syllable verbs only (看, 想, 问, 找, 试) — the doubling is what shows the repetition.
    Español

Repite un verbo de una sílaba alrededor de 了 … 又 … para pintar una acción pasada prolongada y repetida — "…ó y …ó". A menudo es seguido por 还是 / 就是 ("pero aún así…").

    Estructura: Subject + Verb + 了 + 又 + (same) Verb ,(还是 / 就是) ……

    this person这个人zhè ge rénI我wǒlooked看kàn了leand又yòulooked看kànstill,还是hái shìdon't不bùrecognise认识rèn shi。

Lo pensó una y otra vez, y al final no fue.

Recuerda: V了又V = "…ó y …ó (y aún…)" — un verbo de una sílaba desgastado por la repetición (看了又看, 想了又想). El 了 va después del primer verbo; 还是 / 就是 suele seguir para indicar que nada cambió.

    Precaución

    • Solo verbos de una sílaba (看, 想, 问, 找, 试) — el doblez es lo que muestra la repetición.

    ……啊,……啊 — enumeración con 啊

    English

Drop 啊 after each item and you get a casual, rattling-off feel — "what with …, and …, you know, that kind of thing." It marks a non-exhaustive list, and can be capped with 什么的 (but not the formal 等等).

    Structure: Item 1 + 啊,Item 2 + 啊,…… (+ 什么的)

Chairs, tables, computers and so on — all bought.

Remember: …啊…啊 = a relaxed "what with X, Y, you know…" — each 啊 is a verbal breath between items, a casual non-exhaustive list. Cap it with 什么的 if you like, but never the stiff 等等.

    Watch out

    • It's chatty — too informal for a formal list (use 等 / 等等 there).
    Español

Añade 啊 después de cada elemento y obtienes un tono informal, como si estuvieras enumerando rápidamente: «con …, y …, ya sabes, cosas por el estilo». Marca una lista no exhaustiva, y puede rematarse con 什么的 (pero no con la formal 等等).

    Estructura: Item 1 + 啊,Item 2 + 啊,…… (+ 什么的)

Recuerda: …啊…啊 = un relajado «con X, Y, ya sabes…»: cada 啊 actúa como una pausa respiratoria entre elementos, indicando una enumeración informal y no exhaustiva. Puedes cerrar la frase con 什么的, pero nunca uses el rígido 等等.

    要不 + Suggestion + 吧 — "¿Qué tal..., o de lo contrario..."

    Watch out

    • The 吧 is what makes it a suggestion rather than a demand — keep it.

Recuerda: 要不 = "¿qué tal... o de lo contrario…" — es un plan B suave que pide acuerdo; es más diplomático que una afirmación directa como 我们…吧. Léalo como "si no (esto), entonces…". No lo confunda con 要不是 ("si no fuera por") ni con 要不然 ("de lo contrario").

    Precaución

彼此 (literalmente "este y aquel") significa "el uno al otro, ambas partes" — es un primo ligeramente formal de 互相. Como objeto requiere un verbo de dos sílabas; también puede usarse solo.

Estructura: 彼此 + Verb · Verb + 彼此

we我们wǒ menonly只zhǐhave met见过jiàn guoonce一次yí cìeach other,彼此bǐ cǐdon't不bùvery太tàiknow了解liǎo jiě。

Nos hemos visto solo una vez — no nos conocemos bien.

we我们wǒ menshould应该yīng gāieach other彼此bǐ cǐtrust信任xìn rèn。

Deberíamos confiar el uno en el otro.

Recuerda: 彼此 = "este-aquel" = el uno al otro — el pariente formal de 互相, que se usa con verbos de dos sílabas (信任, 了解, 尊重). Expresión adicional: 彼此彼此 = "igualmente / lo mismo para ti."

    Precaución

    • Registro formal — en el habla cotidiana, 互相 suena más natural.

Tiempo / Evento + 以来 — "desde, desde entonces"

    English

以来 marks a stretch of time running from a past point right up to now — "(ever) since." It usually opens the sentence; in formal writing it can be bracketed as 自(从) … 以来.

    Structure: Time / Event + 以来 ,……

    getting married结婚jié hūnsince以来yǐ láiwe,我们wǒ menhaven't没méihad吵过chǎo guoa fight架jià。

Since starting university, he's changed a lot.

Remember: 以来 = "from (then) up to NOW" — a continuous run reaching the present (结婚以来, 上大学以来). In writing, wrap it: 自从…以来. Set phrases: 长期以来 ("for ages now"), 有史以来 ("since history began").

    Watch out

    • It implies the period reaches the present — for a closed past span, use 的时候 / 那时.
    Español

    Watch out

    • Don't leave 当 dangling without its 的时候 / 时 — they work as a pair.
    Español

    Estructura: 当 + Event + 的时候 ,……

Recuerda: 当 … 的时候 = unos corchetes alrededor de "cuando…" (当 lo abre, 的时候 lo cierra). El 当 es opcional pero añade un tono formal y narrativo; 的时候可以 acortarse a 时.

    Precaución

Sustantivo + 这个 + Categoría — apodos con 这个

    English

Slot 这个 + category after a name or pronoun and it adds a wry, evaluative colour — "you, … of a …, this so-called …." It paints the noun with the speaker's attitude, fond or critical.

Structure: Noun / Pronoun + 这个 + Category

    you你nǐthis这个zhè geperson人rén啊atoo,太tàicareless粗心cū xīn了le。

You — you're just too careless.

    he他tāthis这个zhè geteacher老师lǎo shī当dāng得dereally真zhēngood不错bú cuò。

As a teacher, he's really rather good.

Remember: Noun + 这个 + category = identification with an attitude — 你这个人啊… ("you — honestly!"). It's not neutral pointing; it carries the speaker's feeling, affectionate or exasperated.

    Watch out

    • Very colloquial — 你这个人, 他这个孩子. In neutral identification you'd just drop the 这个.
    Español

Coloque 这个 + categoría después de un nombre o pronombre para añadir un matiz irónico y evaluativo — "tú, … de un …, tal llamado …". Pinta el sustantivo con la actitud del hablante, cariñosa o crítica.

Estructura: Noun / Pronoun + 这个 + Category

    you你nǐthis这个zhè geperson人rén啊atoo,太tàicareless粗心cū xīn了le。

Recuerda: Sustantivo + 这个 + categoría = identificación con una actitud — 你这个人啊… ("tú — ¡honestamente!"). No es una mera señalización neutral; lleva puesta la emoción del hablante, afectuosa o exasperada.

    Precaución

    • Muy coloquial — 你这个人, 他这个孩子. En una identificación neutra simplemente omitiría el 这个.

    动词 + 宾语 + 了 — advanced placement of 了

    English

The completion 了 can sit right after the verb or after the object — and which you pick depends on the object's length. With a short object, either works; with a long object, put 了 right after the verb so the listener isn't left hanging. 了 can also chain "after doing A, then B" in a future sequence.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + 了 + Object · Subject + Verb + Object + 了

I我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānsaw见jiàn了lean一个yí geold friend老朋友lǎo péng you。

I saw an old friend today.

    you你nǐget到dào了lehome家jiā给gěime我wǒcall打电话dǎ diàn huà。

Call me once you've got home.

Remember: short object → 了 either side; LONG object → 了 right after the verb (见了一个很久没见的老朋友 — don't make the listener wait for the 了). And V了O就… chains two future actions: 下了课就去找你 ("come find you after class").

    Watch out

    • With a long, modified object, 了 after the object reads awkwardly — keep it on the verb.
    Español

El 了 de completitud puede ir justo después del verbo o después del objeto, y la elección depende de la longitud del objeto. Con un objeto corto, cualquiera de las dos opciones funciona; con un objeto largo, coloca el 了 justo después del verbo para que el oyente no tenga que esperar. El 了 también puede encadenar "después de hacer A, luego B" en una secuencia futura.

    Estructura: Subject + Verb + 了 + Object · Subject + Verb + Object + 了

I我wǒtoday今天jīn tiānsaw见jiàn了lean一个yí geold friend老朋友lǎo péng you。

Vi a un amigo viejo hoy.

    you你nǐget到dào了lehome家jiā给gěime我wǒcall打电话dǎ diàn huà。

    Llámame cuando llegues a casa.

Recuerda: objeto corto → 了 en ambos lados; OBJETO LARGO → 了 justo después del verbo (见了一个很久没见的老朋友 — no hagas esperar al oyente por el 了). Y V了O就… encadena dos acciones futuras: 下了课就去找你 ("ven a buscarme cuando salgas de clase").

    Precaución

    • Con un objeto largo modificado, poner 了 después del objeto suena forzado; manténlo sobre el verbo.
    6.2

    动词 + 了 + 补语 — advanced placement of 了 con complementos

    English

When a complement follows the verb, 了 usually goes after the complement (吃完了, 买到了). Wedging it between the verb and complement (站了起来) is more written, and limited mostly to direction complements.

    Structure: Subject + Verb + Complement + 了 · (rarer) Subject + Verb + 了 + Complement

    the tickets票piàosold卖màiout光guāng了le。

    The tickets are sold out.

    he他tāstood站zhàn了leup起来qǐ lái。

    He stood up.

Remember: default: 了 AFTER the complement (吃完了, 卖光了). 了 between verb and complement is the exception — mostly direction complements (站了起来, 跑了过来), and more written.

    Watch out

    • 吃了完 is wrong — the 了 sits after the whole verb-complement: 吃完了.
    Español

Cuando un complemento sigue al verbo, el 了 generalmente va después del complemento (吃完了, 买到了). Colocarlo entre el verbo y el complemento (站了起来) es más formal/escrito y se limita principalmente a los complementos de dirección.

    Estructura: Subject + Verb + Complement + 了 · (menos común) Subject + Verb + 了 + Complement

    the tickets票piàosold卖màiout光guāng了le。

    Se agotaron los boletos.

    he他tāstood站zhàn了leup起来qǐ lái。

    Se puso de pie.

Recuerda: por defecto: 了 DESPUÉS del complemento (吃完了, 卖光了). El 了 entre el verbo y el complemento es la excepción — principalmente en complementos de dirección (站了起来, 跑了过来), y más usado en textos escritos.

    Precaución

    • 吃了完 es incorrecto — el 了 va después de todo el verbo-complemento: 吃完了.

    话题 + 嘛 — 嘛 como marcador de tema

    English

The particle 嘛 after a topic lets you name it, then comment — "as for …, well, …." The comment is often something you treat as self-evident — a gentle "well, obviously…".

    Structure: Topic + 嘛 ,Comment

the first time第一次dì yī cì嘛malater,以后yǐ hòu就jiùget the hang of it会huì了le。

Well, it's a brand name — it's bound to be pricey.

Remember: 嘛 = "well, obviously…" — it flags a topic and frames the comment as common sense (名牌嘛 — "it's a brand name, what do you expect"). A "isn't it clear?" softener.

    Watch out

    • The 嘛 reading is "obvious / reasonable" — don't confuse it with the question 吗.
    Español

La partícula 嘛 después de un tema permite nombrarlo y luego comentar — "en cuanto a …, pues …". El comentario suele ser algo que tratas como obvio — un suave "bueno, obviamente…".

    Estructura: Topic + 嘛 ,Comment

the first time第一次dì yī cì嘛malater,以后yǐ hòu就jiùget the hang of it会huì了le。

Recuerda: 嘛 = "bueno, obviamente…" — marca un tema y presenta el comentario como sentido común (名牌嘛 — "es una marca famosa, ¿qué esperas?"). Un suavizador tipo "¿no está claro?".

    Precaución

    • La lectura de 嘛 implica "obvio / razonable" — no lo confundas con la pregunta 吗.

    …… 呢? — suavizar una pregunta

    English

呢 makes a question gentler and more musing or reflective — almost "(I wonder) …?" It works after 还是 (weighing options), after a question word, or on a V-不-V question.

Remember: this 呢 = a soft, musing "(I wonder)…" — it takes the edge off a question word / 还是 / V-不-V query, often almost self-directed. Softer than a blunt 哪儿去了?.

    Watch out

    • It doesn't form yes/no questions (that's 吗) — it rides on an existing question.
    Español

as for至于zhì yúthe price价格jià géwe,我们wǒ menlater以后yǐ hòuagain再zàidiscuss谈tán。

En cuanto al precio, lo discutiremos más tarde.

I我wǒagree同意tóng yìas for,至于zhì yúhow怎么zěn meto do it做zuòit's up to,听tīngyou你nǐ的de。

Estoy de acuerdo; en cuanto a cómo hacerlo, depende de ti.

Recuerda: 至于 = un cambio limpio de tema ("en cuanto a X…") — deja el punto anterior y pasa a uno nuevo. Como el inglés "as for…", se sitúa al inicio del nuevo tema.

    Precaución

    • Introduce un nuevo tema, no un contraste — no lo uses donde quieras decir "pero".

    给 … 给 … — pasiva con 给

    English

A 给 before the doer plus a 给 before the verb makes a colloquial passive — "(it) got …ed (by someone)." The second 给 stands in for 被.

    Structure: Receiver + 给 + Doer + 给 + Verb Phrase

    my我wǒ的decake蛋糕dàn gāoby给gěilittle brother弟弟dì di给gěieaten吃chī了le。

My cake got eaten by my little brother.

    the cup杯子bēi ziby给gěihim他tā给gěibroken打破dǎ pò了le。

The cup got broken by him.

Remember: the second 给 ≈ 被 — 给 (doer) 给 (verb) is a chatty passive: 蛋糕给弟弟给吃了 ("the cake got eaten by little brother"). Casual speech only.

    Watch out

    • It's colloquial — in writing use 被 (蛋糕被弟弟吃了).
    Español

Un 给 antes del agente más un 给 antes del verbo forman una pasiva coloquial — "(algo) fue …ed (por alguien)". El segundo 给 sustituye a 被.

    Estructura: Receiver + 给 + Doer + 给 + Verb Phrase

    my我wǒ的decake蛋糕dàn gāoby给gěilittle brother弟弟dì di给gěieaten吃chī了le。

Mi pastel fue comido por mi hermano pequeño.

    the cup杯子bēi ziby给gěihim他tā给gěibroken打破dǎ pò了le。

La taza fue rota por él.

Recuerda: el segundo 给 ≈ 被 — 给 (agente) 给 (verbo) es una pasiva informal: 蛋糕给弟弟给吃了 ("el pastel fue comido por el hermano pequeño"). Solo en habla casual.

    Precaución

    • Es coloquial — en escritura usa 被 (蛋糕被弟弟吃了).

    就 … (来说 / 而言) — "en lo que a … respecta"

    English

就 … 来说 / 而言 narrows the discussion to one aspect — "as far as … goes, in terms of …."

    Structure: 就 + Aspect + 来说 / 而言 ,……

in terms of就jiùquality质量zhì liàng来说lái shuōthis one,这个zhè ge更gèngbetter好hǎo。

In terms of quality, this one's better.

as就jiùthings stand now目前mù qián而言ér yánthere's no,没有méi yǒuproblem问题wèn tí。

As things stand now, there's no problem.

Remember: 就 X 来说 / 而言 = "in terms of X" — it zooms the lens onto a single aspect for the comment that follows (就质量来说…, 就目前而言…). This 就 isn't "then" — it's "regarding".

    Watch out

    • Don't confuse this 就 with the time/quantity 就 — here it's a topic-narrowing "as regards".
    Español

就 … 来说 / 而言 limita la discusión a un aspecto concreto — "en lo que a … respecta, en términos de …".

    Estructura: 就 + Aspect + 来说 / 而言 ,……

in terms of就jiùquality质量zhì liàng来说lái shuōthis one,这个zhè ge更gèngbetter好hǎo。

En términos de calidad, este es mejor.

as就jiùthings stand now目前mù qián而言ér yánthere's no,没有méi yǒuproblem问题wèn tí。

Según como están las cosas ahora, no hay problema.

Recuerda: 就 X 来说 / 而言 = "en términos de X" — enfoca la lente sobre un único aspecto para el comentario siguiente (就质量来说…, 就目前而言…). Este 就 no es "entonces" — es "respecto a".

    Precaución

    • No confundas este 就 con el 就 de tiempo/cantidad — aquí significa "en lo que respecta a".
    8.9

    趁 — "mientras; aprovechando"

    English

趁 grabs a favourable moment or condition — "while, taking advantage of (the chance)."

    Structure: 趁 + Situation / Opportunity ……

    while趁chènthe weather天气tiān qìgood好hǎowe,我们wǒ mengo去qùfor a picnic野餐yě cān吧ba。

While the weather's good, let's go for a picnic.

while趁chènyou're young年轻nián qīngmore,多duōgo out出去chū qùand see things走走zǒu zou吧ba。

While you're young, get out and see things.

Remember: 趁 = "seize the moment / while it lasts" — grab the chance before it's gone. Set phrases nail the feel: 趁热吃 ("eat while it's hot"), 趁早 ("while there's still time"), 趁年轻.

    Watch out

    • It needs a favourable window — for a plain "when," use 当…的时候.
    Español

趁 aprovecha un momento o condición favorable — "mientras, aprovechando (la oportunidad)".

    Estructura: 趁 + Situation / Opportunity ……

    while趁chènthe weather天气tiān qìgood好hǎowe,我们wǒ mengo去qùfor a picnic野餐yě cān吧ba。

Mientras hace buen tiempo, vamos a hacer un picnic.

while趁chènyou're young年轻nián qīngmore,多duōgo out出去chū qùand see things走走zǒu zou吧ba。

Mientras seas joven, sal y ve el mundo.

Recuerda: 趁 = "aprovechar el momento / mientras dure" — aprovecha la oportunidad antes de que pase. Las frases hechas marcan el matiz: 趁热吃 ("comer mientras esté caliente"), 趁早 ("mientras haya tiempo"), 趁年轻.

    Precaución

    • Necesita una ventana favorable — para un simple "cuando", usa 当…的时候.

要不是 …… (的话) ,…… — "si no fuera por..."

    English

要不是 sets up a counterfactual — "if it weren't for …, (then) …" (≈ 如果不是). The second clause says what would otherwise have happened.

Structure: 要不是 + Condition (的话) ,……

if it weren't for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐI,我wǒwould会huìget lost迷路mí lù。

If it weren't for you, I'd get lost.

if it weren't for要不是yào bú shìthe traffic堵车dǔ chēI,我wǒalready早就zǎo jiùarrived到dào了le。

If not for the traffic, I'd already be here.

Remember: 要不是 = "if it weren't for…" (= 如果不是) — an unreal condition that didn't happen, with the result clause spelling out the road not taken. 要不是堵车,我早就到了 ("if not for the traffic, I'd be there").

    Watch out

    • It's counterfactual — the condition is contrary to fact (there was traffic), so the result is what would have been.
    Español

要不是 establece una contrafactual — "si no fuera por …, (entonces) …" (≈ 如果不是). La segunda cláusula dice qué habría sucedido de otro modo.

Estructura: 要不是 + Condition (的话) ,……

if it weren't for要不是yào bú shìyou你nǐI,我wǒwould会huìget lost迷路mí lù。

Si no fuera por ti, me perdería.

if it weren't for要不是yào bú shìthe traffic堵车dǔ chēI,我wǒalready早就zǎo jiùarrived到dào了le。

Si no hubiera sido por el tráfico, ya estaría aquí.

Recuerda: 要不是 = "si no fuera por…" (= 如果不是) — una condición irreal que no ocurrió, con la cláusula del resultado detallando el camino no seguido. 要不是堵车,我早就到了 ("si no hubiera sido por el tráfico, ya estaría allí").

    Precaución

    • Es contrafactual — la condición es contraria a los hechos (hubo tráfico), por lo que el resultado es lo que habría pasado.
    9.2

    多亏 (了) — "gracias a, por suerte"

    English

多亏 gives grateful credit that a bad outcome was dodged — "thanks to, luckily (because of)." It often takes 了 and pairs with 不然 / 否则 ("otherwise").

Structure: Good Outcome ,多亏 (了) + Lucky Incident

    I我wǒwasn't没méilate迟到chí dàothanks to,多亏duō kuī了leyou你nǐdriving开车kāi chēme送sòng我wǒ。

I wasn't late, thanks to you giving me a ride.

luckily多亏duō kuīyou你nǐreminded me提醒tí xǐngotherwise,不然bù ránI我wǒsurely肯定kěn dìngforget忘wàng了le。

Luckily you reminded me — otherwise I'd definitely have forgotten.

Remember: 多亏 = "thanks to (you/it), disaster dodged." It credits a specific person or thing (whereas 幸亏 thanks plain luck), and it loves a 不然 / 否则 to spell out the averted bad outcome.

    Watch out

    • It's gratitude for a near-miss — pair it with the "otherwise…" to show what was avoided.
    Español

多亏 otorga un crédito agradecido por haber evitado un mal desenlace — "gracias a, por suerte (debido a)". A menudo lleva 了 y se combina con 不然 / 否则 ("de lo contrario").

Estructura: Good Outcome ,多亏 (了) + Lucky Incident

    I我wǒwasn't没méilate迟到chí dàothanks to,多亏duō kuī了leyou你nǐdriving开车kāi chēme送sòng我wǒ。

No llegué tarde, gracias a que me llevaste en coche.

luckily多亏duō kuīyou你nǐreminded me提醒tí xǐngotherwise,不然bù ránI我wǒsurely肯定kěn dìngforget忘wàng了le。

Por suerte recordaste mi nombre — de lo contrario definitivamente lo habría olvidado.

Recuerda: 多亏 = "gracias a (ti/esto), desastre evitado." Agradece a una persona o cosa específica (mientras que 幸亏 agradece a la pura suerte), y suele acompañarse de 不然 / 否则 para detallar el resultado malo evitado.

    Precaución

    • Es gratitud por un incidente evitado — combínalo con "de lo contrario…" para mostrar lo que se evitó.
    9.3

(仅仅) 是 …… 而已 — "eso es todo, simplemente"

    English

End a sentence with 而已 to play the matter down — "merely …, that's all, nothing more." It often rides with 只是 / 就是 / 才.

    Structure: (只是 / 就是 +) …… + 而已

just a一杯yì bēicoffee咖啡kā fēithat's all而已ér yǐdon't,别biéso这么zhè mebe moved感动gǎn dòng。

    It's just a coffee — don't be so touched.

I我wǒwas just只是zhǐ shìmaking开kāi个gea joke玩笑wán xiàothat's all而已ér yǐ。

I was only joking, that's all.

Remember: 而已 deflates: "…and that's ALL, no big deal." It tags the end of a sentence, often after 只是 / 就是 (只是开玩笑而已), shrinking the thing to nothing much.

    Watch out

    • It minimises — don't use it where you actually want to emphasise.
    Español

Termina una oración con 而已 para minimizar la importancia — "simplemente …, eso es todo, nada más". A menudo va junto con 只是 / 就是 / 才.

    Estructura: (只是 / 就是 +) …… + 而已

just a一杯yì bēicoffee咖啡kā fēithat's all而已ér yǐdon't,别biéso这么zhè mebe moved感动gǎn dòng。

Es solo un café — no te emociones tanto.

I我wǒwas just只是zhǐ shìmaking开kāi个gea joke玩笑wán xiàothat's all而已ér yǐ。

Solo estaba bromear, eso es todo.

Recuerda: 而已 reduce la importancia: "…y eso es TODO, no es gran cosa." Se coloca al final de la oración, a menudo después de 只是 / 就是 (只是开玩笑而已), minimizando la situación.

    Precaución

    • Minimiza — no lo uses donde realmente quieras enfatizar.

    将 — 把 formal

    English

In formal or written Chinese, 将 does the job of 把, moving the object before the verb — "take (object) and …."

    Structure: Subject + 将 + Object + Verb Phrase

he他tā将jiāngall the这些zhè xiēcake蛋糕dàn gāo都dōuate up吃完chī wán了le。

He ate up all the cake.

    please请qǐng将jiāngyour phone手机shǒu jīset调tiáoto成chéngsilent静音jìng yīn。

Please set your phone to silent.

Remember: 将 = the written-Chinese 把 — same disposal job, formal register (将手机调成静音 = 把手机调成静音). You'll meet it in notices and announcements. (将 also means future "will / shall" — a separate use.)

    Watch out

    • Keep it for formal/written contexts — in speech, 把 is the natural choice.
    Español

En chino formal o escrito, 将 cumple la función de 把, moviendo el objeto antes del verbo — "tomar (objeto) y …".

    Estructura: Subject + 将 + Object + Verb Phrase

he他tā将jiāngall the这些zhè xiēcake蛋糕dàn gāo都dōuate up吃完chī wán了le。

Él se comió todos los pasteles.

    please请qǐng将jiāngyour phone手机shǒu jīset调tiáoto成chéngsilent静音jìng yīn。

Por favor, pon tu teléfono en modo silencio.

Recuerda: 将 = el 把 del chino escrito — misma función de disposición, registro formal (将手机调成静音 = 把手机调成 silencio). Lo encontrarás en avisos y anuncios. (将 también significa futuro "will / shall" — un uso separado.)

    Precaución

    • Guárdalo para contextos formales/escritos — en el habla, 把 es la elección natural.

Verbo + 什么 — rechazar una acción

    English

A verb followed by 什么 (often the same verb again) is a rhetorical, annoyed pushback — "what are you …ing for? / stop …ing!" With a separable verb, 什么 splits the two halves.

Structure: Verb + 什么 + (same) Verb · Verb + 什么 + Object

you你nǐcrying哭kūwhat for什么shén me哭kūit's not as if,又yòu不是bú shìthere's no没有méi yǒuyour你nǐ的degift礼物lǐ wù。

divorce离líwhat什么shén me婚hūnyou!你们nǐ menonly才cáimarried结婚jié hūnthree months三个月sān ge yuè。

Divorce?! You've only been married three months!

Remember: V + 什么 (+ V) = an irritated "what are you …ing for?!" — 哭什么哭 ("quit crying!"), 急什么 ("what's the rush?!"). Separable verbs split around it: 离什么婚, 道什么歉.

    Watch out

    • It's blunt and familiar — fine between close friends/family, rude to strangers.
    Español

Un verbo seguido de 什么 (a menudo el mismo verbo repetido) es una respuesta retórica y molesta — "¿para qué estás …? / ¡deja de …!". Con un verbo separable, 什么 divide las dos partes.

Estructura: Verb + 什么 + (same) Verb · Verb + 什么 + Object

you你nǐcrying哭kūwhat for什么shén me哭kūit's not as if,又yòu不是bú shìthere's no没有méi yǒuyour你nǐ的degift礼物lǐ wù。

divorce离líwhat什么shén me婚hūnyou!你们nǐ menonly才cáimarried结婚jié hūnthree months三个月sān ge yuè。

¡Divorciarse?! Solo llevan casados tres meses.

Recuerda: V + 什么 (+ V) = un "¿para qué estás …?" irritado — 哭什么哭 ("¡deja de llorar!"), 急什么 ("¿por qué tanta prisa?!"). Los verbos separables se dividen alrededor de él: 离什么婚, 道什么道歉.

    Precaución

    • Es directo e íntimo — aceptable entre amigos o familiares cercanos, pero grosero con desconocidos.

Remember: 像…一样 = "just like"; 不像…那么… = "not as … as." 今天不像昨天那么冷 ("today isn't as cold as yesterday"). The 这么 / 那么 carries the degree being fallen short of.

    Watch out

    • It's a near-twin of the 没有…那么… comparison (HSK 3) — both say "falls short of."
    Español

像 significa "(justamente) como"; 不像 + B + 这么 / 那么 + Adj indica que A se queda corta respecto a B en alguna cualidad — "tan … como B".

    Estructura: Noun 1 + 像 + Noun 2 + 一样 + Adj · Noun 1 + 不像 + Noun 2 + 这么 / 那么 + Adj

    Precaución

    • Es un casi gemelo de la estructura de comparación 没有…那么… (HSK 3) — ambas expresan "quedar corto en comparación".
    10.3

    比起 + B (+ 来) ,A ~ — "comparado con B, A …"

    English

    比起 … (来) opens a comparison frame — "compared with B, A is …." It puts B forward as the yardstick. A variant is (跟 / 和 / 与) B 相比.

    Structure: 比起 + B (+ 来) ,A + Comment · (与) B 相比 ,A ~

    Remember: 比起 B (来) / 与 B 相比 = "set against B, …" — it foregrounds the yardstick B, then delivers the verdict on A. The everyday cousin is 跟…比起来 (HSK 3).

    Watch out

    • It frames the comparison; for a plain "A is more X than B," a bare 比 (A比B…) is enough.
    Español

    比起 … (来) establece un marco de comparación — "comparado con B, A es …". Coloca a B como punto de referencia. Una variante es (跟 / 和 / 与) B 相比.

    Estructura: 比起 + B (+ 来) ,A + Comment · (与) B 相比 ,A ~

compared with比起bǐ qǐShanghai上海Shàng hǎimy,我wǒhometown老家lǎo jiā的deprices物价wù jiàcheaper便宜pián yimuch多duō了le。

Comparado con la enseñanza online, prefiero la presencial.

    Recuerda: 比起 B (来) / 与 B 相比 = "frente a B, …" — pone en primer plano la barra de medición B, y luego da el veredicto sobre A. El equivalente cotidiano es 跟…比起来 (HSK 3).

    Precaución

    • Establece el marco de comparación; para una simple "A es más X que B", basta con 比 (A比B…).

    Watch out

    • 与其 sets up the rejected option, 不如 the preferred one — keep that order.
    Español

不如 tiene dos funciones: "A 不如 B (+ Adj)" = "A no es tan (bueno / …) como B"; y "(与其 …,) 不如 …" = "(antes que …,) mejor sería …". Si se omite el adjetivo, 不如 simplemente significa "tan bueno como".

    Estructura: A + 不如 + B (+ Adj) · (与其 …,) 不如 …

Recuerda: 不如 = "tan bueno como / mejor sería". A不如B = "A no es tan bueno como B" (我不如他, "No soy igual a él"); 与其…不如… = "antes que …, mejor sería …". Sin adjetivo, significa simplemente "inferior a".

    Precaución

    • 与其 introduce la opción rechazada, 不如 la preferida — mantener ese orden.

    名词 / 形容词 + 化 — "-izar, -ificar"

    English

The suffix 化 turns a noun or adjective into a process verb — "-ize, -ify, become."

Remember: 化 = English "-ize / -ify" — bolt it on to get a "turn into" verb: 现代化 (modernize), 美化 (beautify), 自动化 (automate), 国际化 (internationalize), 多样化 (diversify).

    Watch out

    • It's a productive academic suffix — great for abstract/process nouns, odd on everyday ones.
    Español

El sufijo 化 convierte un sustantivo o adjetivo en un verbo de proceso — "-izar, -ificar, volverse".

    Estructura: Noun / Adjective + 化

    cities城市chéng shìare modernising现代化xiàn dài huà得devery很hěnfast快kuài。

    Precaución

    • Es un sufijo académico productivo — ideal para sustantivos abstractos o de proceso, pero inusual en vocabulario cotidiano.

    English

算 judges that something counts as a category — "count as, be considered, qualify as." On its own, 算了 = "forget it."

    Structure: Subject + 算 + Adjective / Category + 的

Remember: 算 = "reckons as / counts as" — 算 ("calculate") used to judge a category: 他算高的 ("counts as tall"). And the everyday 算了 on its own = "forget it, let it go."

    Watch out

    • The category form often closes with 的: 算高的, 算便宜的.
    Español

算 juzga que algo cuenta como una categoría — "contar como, ser considerado, calificar como". Por sí solo, 算了 = "déjalo pasar".

    将 / 将要 / 将会 — futuro formal

    English

将 (and 将要 / 将会) marks a future action in formal or written Chinese — "will, shall, is going to." It's the news-and-notice equivalent of the spoken 会 / 要.

    Structure: Subject + 将 / 将要 / 将会 + Verb Phrase

After Adj + 得, a fixed phrase like 很 / 不得了 / 要命 / 不行 cranks the quality to an extreme — "… terribly, … like crazy." (You already know -死了 and -极了; these are the other common ones.)

    Structure: Adjective + 得 + 很 / 不得了 / 要命 / 不行

    this这个zhè gechild孩子hái ziselfish自私zì sīterribly得很de hěn。

    This child is terribly selfish.

    my我wǒfather爸爸bà bastubborn固执gù zhí得deawfully不得了bù dé liǎo。

    My father is awfully stubborn.

Remember: a kit of "…like crazy" tails after Adj + 得: 得很, 得不得了, 得要命, 得不行 (all "… to death / unbearably"). They sit alongside the -死了 / -极了 you already know.

    Watch out

    • These all need the 得 (自私得很); the -死了 / -极了 forms attach bare.
    Español

Después de Adjetivo + 得, una frase fija como 很 / 不得了 / 要命 / 不行 intensifica la calidad hasta un extremo: "... terriblemente, ... a lo loco." (Ya conoces -死了 y -极了; estos son los otros comunes).

    Estructura: Adjective + 得 + 很 / 不得了 / 要命 / 不行

    this这个zhè gechild孩子hái ziselfish自私zì sīterribly得很de hěn。

    Este niño es terriblemente egoísta.

    my我wǒfather爸爸bà bastubborn固执gù zhí得deawfully不得了bù dé liǎo。

    Mí padre es terriblemente terco.

Recuerda: un kit de colas que significan "...a lo loco" después de Adjetivo + 得: 得很, 得不得了, 得要命, 得不行 (todos significan "... hasta morir / insoportablemente"). Se colocan junto con -死了 / -极了 que ya conoces.

    Precaución

    • Todos necesitan el 得 (自私得很); las formas -死了 / -极了 se unen directamente al adjetivo sin partícula.

Verbo + 得了 / 不了 — complementos de posibilidad avanzados

    English

得了 / 不了 (here 了 reads liǎo) after a verb asks whether the action can be managed or pulled off — often hinting at an outside factor. 不了 ≈ "can't (because of circumstances)."

Structure: Verb + 得了 / 不了

    so这么zhè memuch多duōfood菜càiI,我wǒeat吃chīcan't manage不了bù liǎo。

So much food — I can't finish it all.

    he他tāso那么nà meold老lǎowalk,走zǒucan manage得了de liǎothat那么nà mefar多duō路lù吗ma?

He's so old — can he walk that far?

Remember: 了 here = liǎo ("manage / finish") — V得了 / V不了 = "can / can't pull it off," usually due to circumstances (吃不了 "can't finish," 去不了 "can't make it"). Different from 不能 ("not allowed").

    Watch out

    • Mind the reading: 了 = liǎo here, not the le of completion.
    Español

得了 / 不了 (aquí 了 se lee liǎo) después de un verbo pregunta si la acción puede ser lograda o realizada, a menudo insinuando un factor externo. 不了 ≈ "no puedo (por circunstancias)."

Estructura: Verb + 得了 / 不了

    so这么zhè memuch多duōfood菜càiI,我wǒeat吃chīcan't manage不了bù liǎo。

Tanta comida... no puedo terminarla toda.

    he他tāso那么nà meold老lǎowalk,走zǒucan manage得了de liǎothat那么nà mefar多duō路lù吗ma?

Él está tan viejo... ¿puede caminar tan lejos?

Recuerda: 了 aquí = liǎo ("lograr / terminar") — V得了 / V不了 = "puedo / no puedo lograrlo", generalmente debido a circunstancias (吃不了 "no puedo comerme", 去不了 "no puedo ir"). Diferente de 不能 ("no está permitido").

    Precaución

    • Presta atención a la pronunciación: 了 = liǎo aquí, no la le de completitud.
    18.3

    Verbo + 住 / 开 / 出(来) — complementos de resultado avanzados

    English

Three handy result complements: 住 = hold firm / come to a halt (记住, 停住); 开 = apart / away, or relief from a worry (走开, 想开 "let it go"); 出(来) = come into being / figure out (想出来, 看出来).

    Structure: Verb + 住 / 开 / 出(来)

    I我wǒremember记jìcan't不bùhold住zhùso这么zhè memany多duōnew words生词shēng cí。

I can't retain so many new words.

let想xiǎngit go开kāia bit一点yì diǎndon't,别biébe sad难过nán guò了le。

Try to let it go — don't be sad.

Remember: picture each complement: 住 = grip/stop (记住 "hold in memory," 停住 "halt"); 开 = part/away (走开 "go away," 想开 "open up the knot = get over it"); 出(来) = bring forth (想出来 "think up," 看出来 "make out").

    Watch out

    • 想开 ("let it go") vs 想出来 ("think up") — same 想, opposite results from the complement.
    Español

Tres complementos útiles para resultados: 住 = mantenerse firme / detenerse (记住, 停住); 开 = separarse / alejarse, o alivio de una preocupación (走开, 想开 "dejarlo ir"); 出(来) = aparecer / resolver (想出来, 看出来).

    Estructura: Verb + 住 / 开 / 出(来)

    I我wǒremember记jìcan't不bùhold住zhùso这么zhè memany多duōnew words生词shēng cí。

No puedo retener tantas palabras nuevas.

let想xiǎngit go开kāia bit一点yì diǎndon't,别biébe sad难过nán guò了le。

Intenta dejarlo ir... no estés triste.

Recuerda: imagina cada complemento: 住 = agarre/parada (记住 "guardar en memoria," 停住 "detenerse"); 开 = separación/distancia (走开 "irse," 想开 "desatar el nudo = superarlo"); 出(来) = producir/separar (想出来 "inventar," 看出来 "distinguir").

    Precaución

    • 想开 ("dejarlo ir") vs 想出来 ("inventar") — mismo 想, pero resultados opuestos del complemento.
    18.4

Verbo + 坏了 — "...terriblemente, ... hasta el límite"

    English

The complement 坏了 (like 死了) means a feeling has hit an overwhelming pitch — "… terribly, … to bits." Despite 坏 ("bad"), it just means "extremely," and can even be positive.

    Structure: Adjective / psych-Verb + 坏了

    everyone大家dà jiā都dōutired累lèiout坏了huài le。

    Everyone was worn out.

the child孩子hái ziwent missing不见bú jiàn了lethe mother,妈妈mā mafrantic急jí坏了huài le。

The child went missing — the mother was frantic.

Remember: 坏了 = "…to bits," not "broken" — pure intensity, even for good feelings: 累坏了 (worn out), 饿坏了 (starving), 急坏了 (frantic), 高兴坏了 (thrilled to bits).

    Watch out

    • Don't read 高兴坏了 as "happiness broke" — 坏了 is just "extremely."
    Español

El complemento 坏了 (como 死了) significa que un sentimiento ha alcanzado un nivel abrumador: "... terriblemente, ... hasta el límite." A pesar de 坏 ("malo"), solo significa "extremadamente" e incluso puede ser positivo.

    Estructura: Adjective / psych-Verb + 坏了

    everyone大家dà jiā都dōutired累lèiout坏了huài le。

    Todos estaban agotados.

the child孩子hái ziwent missing不见bú jiàn了lethe mother,妈妈mā mafrantic急jí坏了huài le。

El niño desapareció... la madre estaba desesperada.

Recuerda: 坏了 = "...hasta el límite," no "roto" — intensidad pura, incluso para sentimientos buenos: 累坏了 (agotado), 饿坏了 (hambriento), 急坏了 (desesperado), 高兴坏了 (eufórico hasta el límite).

    Precaución

    • No leas 高兴坏了 como "la felicidad se rompió" — 坏了 es simplemente "extremadamente".
    18.5

Verbo + 着 — el complemento de resultado 着 (zháo)

    English

着 (read zháo) after a verb means the action hit its mark — "succeeded in, managed to." Don't confuse it with the aspect particle 着 (zhe). Its potential forms are 得着 / 不着.

    Structure: Verb + 着 (zháo)

    the baby宝宝bǎo baojust刚gāngfell asleep睡着shuì zháo。

    The baby just fell asleep.

last night昨晚zuó wǎnI我wǒdidn't没méimanage to sleep睡着shuì zháo。

I couldn't fall asleep last night.

Remember: 着 = zháo here = "hit the target, succeeded" — 睡着 (managed to sleep), 找着 (found), 买不着 (can't get hold of). A world away from the zhe of an ongoing state (门开着).

    Watch out

    • Two readings, two jobs: 睡着 (zháo, "fell asleep," a result) vs 开着 (zhe, "is open," a state).
    Español

着 (se lee zháo) después de un verbo significa que la acción dio en el blanco: "logró, consiguió." No lo confundas con la partícula de aspecto 着 (zhe). Sus formas de posibilidad son 得着 / 不着.

    Estructura: Verb + 着 (zháo)

    the baby宝宝bǎo baojust刚gāngfell asleep睡着shuì zháo。

    El bebé acaba de dormirse.

last night昨晚zuó wǎnI我wǒdidn't没méimanage to sleep睡着shuì zháo。

Ayer noche no pude conciliar el sueño.

Recuerda: 着 aquí = zháo = "dar en el blanco, tener éxito" — 睡着 (logró dormir), 找着 (encontró), 买不着 (no pudo conseguir). Muy diferente de la zhe de un estado continuo (门开着).

    Precaución

    • Dos pronunciaciones, dos funciones: 睡着 (zháo, "se durmió", un resultado) vs 开着 (zhe, "está abierto", un estado).
    18.6

    Verbo + 到 — usos complicados de 到

    English

到 after a verb makes achievement explicit: 找 ("look for") vs 找到 ("find"); 做 vs 做到 ("accomplish"); 买 vs 买到 ("succeed in buying"). Without 到, a verb can shade into "try to."

    Structure: Verb + 到

    you你nǐmust一定yí dìng要yàofind it找到zhǎo dào。

    You must find it.

    I我wǒdidn't没méiexpect想到xiǎng dàoyou你nǐtoo也yěcame来lái了le。

    I didn't expect you'd come too.

Remember: 到 stamps "achieved" onto the verb: 找 (search) → 找到 (find), 买 → 买到 (succeed in buying), 想 → 想到 (think of / expect). A bare verb can mean just "try to."

    Watch out

    • 找 vs 找到 is the classic pair: 找了半天 ("searched for ages") doesn't say you 找到 ("found") it.
    Español

到 después de un verbo hace explícita la consecución: 找 ("buscar") vs 找到 ("encontrar"); 做 vs 做到 ("lograr"); 买 vs 买到 ("lograr comprar"). Sin 到, un verbo puede inclinarse hacia "intentar".

    Estructura: Verb + 到

    you你nǐmust一定yí dìng要yàofind it找到zhǎo dào。

    Seguramente encontrarás eso.

    I我wǒdidn't没méiexpect想到xiǎng dàoyou你nǐtoo也yěcame来lái了le。

No esperaba que tú también vinieras.

Recuerda: 到 marca "alcanzado" sobre el verbo: 找 (buscar) → 找到 (encontrar), 买 → 买到 (lograr comprar), 想 → 想到 (pensar en / esperar). Un verbo desnudo puede significar solo "intentar".

    Precaución

    • 找 vs 找到 es el par clásico: 找了半天 ("busqué durante horas") no dice que lo 找到 ("encontraste").
    18.7

    Verbo + 来 + Verbo + 去 — "...haciendo esto y aquello"

    English

Wrap one verb in 来 … 去 to paint a repeated, aimless action — "…ing back and forth, over and over." The same single-syllable verb repeats on both sides.

    Structure: Verb + 来 + (same) Verb + 去

he他tā在zàithe exam hall考场kǎo chǎngoutside外面wài miànpaced back and forth走来走去zǒu lái zǒu qù。

He paced back and forth outside the exam hall.

I我wǒthought it over and over想来想去xiǎng lái xiǎng qùstill都dōucouldn't work it out想不明白xiǎng bù míng bai。

I thought it over and over but still couldn't work it out.

Remember: V来V去 = "back and forth, round and round" — the same one-syllable verb on both sides, painting restless repetition: 走来走去 (pacing), 想来想去 (mulling), 说来说去 (going on about it), 翻来覆去 (tossing and turning).

    Watch out

    • It carries a faintly futile / restless tone — lots of motion, often no result.
    Español

Envuelve un verbo en 来 … 去 para pintar una acción repetida y sin rumbo: "... de ida y vuelta, una y otra vez." El mismo verbo monosilábico se repite en ambos lados.

    Estructura: Verb + 来 + (same) Verb + 去

he他tā在zàithe exam hall考场kǎo chǎngoutside外面wài miànpaced back and forth走来走去zǒu lái zǒu qù。

Andaba de un lado a otro fuera de la sala de exámenes.

I我wǒthought it over and over想来想去xiǎng lái xiǎng qùstill都dōucouldn't work it out想不明白xiǎng bù míng bai。

— "once … then …"

    English

一旦 … 就 … sets up a trigger — "once (something happens), then (consequence)." It looks ahead to a possible future turning point. Unlike 一…就… (which links two real events in quick succession), 一旦 frames a hypothetical threshold.

Structure: 一旦 + Condition ,(Subject) 就 + Consequence

    some有些yǒu xiēpeople人rénthe moment一旦yí dànthey have有yǒu了lemoney钱qiánthen,就jiùchange变biàn了le。

Some people change the moment they have money.

Once your company goes public, you'll be rich.

Remember: 一旦 = "if/when ever X happens (then…)" — a HYPOTHETICAL threshold. Contrast 一…就… (HSK 4), which chains two actual events in instant succession (一下课就走). 一旦 looks to a maybe-future; 一…就… reports a real link.

    Watch out

    • 一旦 is about a possible future turning point — don't use it for a habitual or already-happened link (that's 一…就…).
    Español

一旦 … 就 … establece un disparador — "una vez (algo sucede), entonces (consecuencia)." Mira hacia adelante a un posible punto de inflexión futuro. A diferencia de 一…就… (que enlaza dos eventos reales en sucesión rápida), 一旦 enmarca un umbral hipotético.

Estructura: 一旦 + Condition ,(Subject) 就 + Consequence

    some有些yǒu xiēpeople人rénthe moment一旦yí dànthey have有yǒu了lemoney钱qiánthen,就jiùchange变biàn了le。

Algunas personas cambian en cuanto tienen dinero.

Una vez que tu empresa se haga pública, serás rico.

Recuerda: 一旦 = "si/cada vez que X sucede (entonces…)" — un umbral HIPOTÉTICO. Contrasta con 一…就… (HSK 4), que encadena dos eventos reales en sucesión instantánea (一下课就走). 一旦 mira hacia un posible futuro; 一…就… informa sobre una conexión real.

    Precaución

    • 一旦 se refiere a un punto de inflexión futuro posible — no lo uses para una relación habitual o ya ocurrida (eso es 一…就…).

    把 (avanzado) — 给, 当成, 当回事, 看成

    English

Once the basic 把 sentence clicks, these advanced moves come up constantly: 把 + Obj + 给 + Verb (spoken emphasis, 给 optional); 把 + Obj + 当成 / 看作 + … ("treat / regard as"); 不把 … 当回事 ("not take seriously"); and 把 A 看成 / 读成 B ("mistake A for B").

    Structure: 把 + Obj + 给 + VP · 把 + Obj + 当成 / 看作 + … · 把 A + 看成 / 读成 + B

    I我wǒ把bǎthis这zhèmatter事儿shì er给gěiforgot忘wàng了le。

    Remember: a 把 toolkit — 把…给V (a spoken kick: 把事儿给忘了), 把…当成 / 看作… ("treat/regard as"), 不把…当回事 ("not take seriously"), 把 A 看成 / 读成 B ("mistake A for B"). All still "grab the object, then do something to it."

    Watch out

    • The 给 here is just emphasis — it doesn't mean "give."
    Español

Una vez que dominas la estructura básica con 把, surgen constantemente estos matices avanzados: 把 + Objeto + 给 + Verbo (énfasis coloquial, 给 opcional); 把 + Objeto + 当成 / 看作 + … ("tratar / considerar como"); 不把 … 当回事 ("no tomarse en serio"); y 把 A 看成 / 读成 B ("confundir A con B").

    Estructura: 把 + Obj + 给 + VP · 把 + Obj + 当成 / 看作 + … · 把 A + 看成 / 读成 + B

    I我wǒ把bǎthis这zhèmatter事儿shì er给gěiforgot忘wàng了le。

I我wǒhave always一直yì zhí把bǎhim他tāseen as看作kàn zuòmy我wǒolder brother哥哥gē ge。

Siempre lo he considerado como un hermano mayor.

Recuerda: una caja de herramientas con 把 — 把…给V (un énfasis coloquial: 把事儿给忘了), 把…当成 / 看作… ("tratar/considerar como"), 不把…当回事 ("no tomarse en serio"), 把 A 看成 / 读成 B ("confundir A con B"). Todos siguen siendo "agarrar el objeto y luego hacer algo con él".

    Precaución

    • El 给 aquí es solo un énfasis; no significa "dar".
    20.2

    Sustantivo 1 + 不比 + Sustantivo 2 + Adj. — "no más … que"

    English

不比 is not 没有. 没有 = "not as … as" (definitely less); 不比 = "no more … than" (we might even be equal). It directly negates 比.

    Structure: Noun 1 + 不比 + Noun 2 + Adjective · A + 不比 + B + Verb + 得 + Adj

    you你nǐno … than不比bù bǐme我wǒworse差chà。

    You're no worse than me.

she她tādances跳tiào得deno … than不比bù bǐa star明星míng xīngworse差chà。

She dances no worse than a star.

Remember: 不比 = "no more … than" (maybe equal); 没有 = "not as … as" (definitely less). 你不比我差 ("you're no worse than me," i.e. just as good). And don't muddle 不比 (bùbǐ) with 不必 (bùbì, "needn't")!

    Watch out

    • 不比 quietly leaves room for "equal" — it denies "more," not "the same."
    Español

不比 no es 没有. 没有 = "no tan … como" (definitivamente menos); 不比 = "no más … que" (podríamos estar incluso igual). Niega directamente a 比.

    Estructura: Noun 1 + 不比 + Noun 2 + Adjective · A + 不比 + B + Verb + 得 + Adj

    you你nǐno … than不比bù bǐme我wǒworse差chà。

Tú no eres peor que yo.

Recuerda: 不比 = "no más … que" (quizás igual); 没有 = "no tan … como" (definitivamente menos). 你不比我差 ("tú no eres peor que yo", es decir, eres igual de bueno). ¡Y no confundas 不比 (bùbǐ) con 不必 (bùbì, "no hace falta")!

    Precaución

    • 不比 deja implícitamente espacio para "igual"; niega "más", no "lo mismo".
    20.3

    要 + Verbo + 就 + Verbo — "si vas a …, entonces …"

    English

要 + V + 就 + V lays down a resolute condition — "if you're going to V, then V (and do it properly / now)." The tone is almost a command, so it usually drops the subject, with single-syllable verbs.

    Structure: 要 + Verb + 就 + Verb ……

    if you're going to要yàoleave走zǒuthen就jiùleave走zǒuwe,我们wǒ mendon't不bùneed需要xū yàoyou你nǐ。

If you're leaving, then leave — we don't need you.

if you're going to要yàostudy it学xuéthen就jiùproperly好好hǎo hǎostudy学xué。

If you're going to study it, study it properly.

Remember: 要V就V = "if you're gonna do it, then DO it (properly)" — resolute, command-like, usually subjectless (要走就走). Don't mix it up with the indifferent V就V (坏了就坏了, "so be it") later in this file.

    Watch out

    • The second verb can take a short modifier: 要去就快点去, 要学就好好学.
    Español

要 + V + 就 + V establece una condición resuelta — "si vas a V, entonces V (y hazlo bien / ahora)". El tono es casi una orden, por lo que suele omitirse el sujeto y usar verbos monosilábicos.

    Estructura: 要 + Verb + 就 + Verb ……

    if you're going to要yàoleave走zǒuthen就jiùleave走zǒuwe,我们wǒ mendon't不bùneed需要xū yàoyou你nǐ。

Si te vas, ¡vete ya! No nos necesitas.

if you're going to要yàostudy it学xuéthen就jiùproperly好好hǎo hǎostudy学xué。

Si vas a estudiar, estudia bien.

Recuerda: 要V就V = "si vas a hacerlo, hazlo (bien)" — resuelto, tipo orden, usualmente sin sujeto (要走就走). No lo confundas con la indiferencia V就V (坏了就坏了, "que sea así") más adelante en este archivo.

    Precaución

    • El segundo verbo puede llevar un modificador corto: 要去就快点去, 要学就好好学.

少不了 — "no se puede prescindir de"

    English

少不了 means something is indispensable or unavoidable — "can't do without, bound to involve." It's colloquial.

Structure: Subject + 少不了 + Noun / Verb Phrase

every每年měi niánNew Year春节Chūn jiéyou can't do without,少不了shǎo bu liǎodumplings饺子jiǎo zi。

Get home late and a telling-off is guaranteed.

Remember: 少不了 = "can't be short of it" = indispensable / inescapable — the good kind (过年少不了饺子) or the bad (少不了一顿骂, "a telling-off is guaranteed").

    Watch out

    • 了 is liǎo here — 少不了 ("can't do without"), not 少不了 with a le.
    Español

少不了 significa que algo es indispensable o inevitable — "no se puede prescindir de, va a incluir obligatoriamente". Es coloquial.

Estructura: Subject + 少不了 + Noun / Verb Phrase

every每年měi niánNew Year春节Chūn jiéyou can't do without,少不了shǎo bu liǎodumplings饺子jiǎo zi。

El Año Nuevo no sería tal sin empanadas.

getting home回家huí jiālate晚wǎn了lethere's no escaping,少不了shǎo bu liǎoa一顿yí dùntelling-off骂mà。

Llegas tarde y te toca un regañón seguro.

Recuerda: 少不了 = "no puede faltar" = indispensable / ineludible — en sentido positivo (过年少不了饺子) o negativo (少不了一顿骂, "seguro que te regañan").

    Precaución

    • 了 se pronuncia liǎo aquí — 少不了 ("no se puede prescindir de"), no 少不了 con le.

A ,等于 B — "equivale a, es lo mismo que"

    English

等于 equates two things — "equals, amounts to, is the same as." Beyond maths, it draws an "as good as" equivalence, often an unintended one.

    Structure: A ,(就) 等于 B

    Wasting time is wasting life.

Telling Xiao Wang is as good as telling everyone.

Remember: 等于 = "= / as good as" — straight from maths (3+2 等于 5) into "amounts to the same thing" (告诉小王就等于告诉大家). Often a consequence you didn't intend.

    Watch out

    • It draws an equivalence, not a cause — "X 等于 Y" says they amount to the same, not "X causes Y."
    Español

等于 equipara dos cosas — "equivale a, equivale a, es lo mismo que". Más allá de las matemáticas, establece una equivalencia de "tan bueno como", a menudo inintencionada.

    Estructura: A ,(就) 等于 B

Recuerda: 等于 = "= / tan bueno como" — directo de las matemáticas (3+2 等于 5) hacia "equivale a lo mismo" (告诉小王就等于告诉大家). A menudo es una consecuencia que no intendede.

    Precaución

    • Establece una equivalencia, no una causa — "X 等于 Y" dice que equivalen a lo mismo, no que "X causa Y".

Remember: this 好 = "so that / so as to," not "good." It links an action to its purpose: 说慢点,好做笔记 ("speak slowly, so that we can take notes"). Think "do this, the better to…".

    Watch out

    • Mid-clause 好 + a verb = purpose; don't read it as the adjective "good" there.
    Español

Recuerda: este 好 = "para que / a fin de", no "bueno". Une una acción a su propósito: 说慢点,好做笔记 ("hable lento, para que podamos tomar notas"). Piensa "haz esto, mejor para…".

    Precaución

    • 好 medio oracional + un verbo = propósito; no lo leas como el adjetivo "bueno" allí.

总算 vs 终于 — "finally, at last"

    English

Both mean "finally," but the feeling differs. 总算 is informal and breathes relief — things finally worked out acceptably, often after worry or impatience. 终于 is more neutral and objective, for any long-awaited result (good or bad). 总算 rarely goes before the subject.

    waited等děng了lea long time很久hěn jiǔhe,他tāat last (relief)总算zǒng suàncame来lái了le。

    Español

Ambas significan "finalmente", pero la sensación difiere. 总算 es informal y expresa alivio: las cosas finalmente salieron bien de manera aceptable, a menudo tras preocupación o impaciencia. 终于 es más neutral y objetivo, para cualquier resultado muy esperado (bueno o malo). 总算 rara vez va antes del sujeto.

    跟 vs 对 — "con" / "y" vs "a" / "hacia"

    English

With 说, both work (我跟她说 / 我对她说). But they part ways elsewhere. 跟 also means "and / with" — it joins or compares two things (跟…一样, 跟…一起). 对 marks the one-way target of an attitude or action (对…笑, 对…好), and it can't join two nouns.

I我wǒlike跟gēnyou all你们nǐ mennot不bùthe same一样yí yàngI,我wǒstill have还有hái yǒukids孩子hái zi呢ne。

Remember: 跟 JOINS (two-way): "and / with / same as" (跟…一样, 跟…一起); 对 AIMS (one-way): "to / towards" (对他笑, 对我好). Picture 跟 as a link between equals, 对 as an arrow at a target.

    Watch out

    • 对 can't join two nouns — "A and B" is 跟 / 和, never 对.
    Español

Con decir, ambos funcionan (我跟她说 / 我对她说). Pero divergen en otros contextos. 跟 también significa "y / con" — une o compara dos cosas (跟…一样, 跟…一起). 对 marca el objetivo unidireccional de una actitud o acción (对…笑, 对…好), y no puede unir dos sustantivos.

I我wǒlike跟gēnyou all你们nǐ mennot不bùthe same一样yí yàngI,我wǒstill have还有hái yǒukids孩子hái zi呢ne。

All three mark direction. Before a verb in plain directional use they're interchangeable (往 / 向 / 朝前走). After a verb (开往, 飞往), 往 marks the destination and is the most common; 向 marks direction; 朝 can't go after a verb. Only 向 stretches to abstract aims (向…学习).

    Watch out

    • 朝 is the most restricted — keep it before the verb.
    Español

Los tres marcan dirección. Antes de un verbo en uso direccional simple son intercambiables (往 / 向 / 朝前走). Después de un verbo (开往, 飞往), 往 marca la destinación y es el más común; 向 marca la dirección; 朝 no puede ir después de un verbo. Solo 向 se extiende a objetivos abstractos (向…学习).

    对 vs 对于 — "hacia, respecto a"

    English

Near-synonyms for "towards / regarding." 对 is flexible and can mark a person you act on (对他笑 "smile at him"). 对于 is more formal, frames only a topic or object of attitude, and can't take a direct personal target. Rule of thumb: anywhere 对于 fits, 对 fits too — not the reverse.

Remember: 对于 fits ⟹ 对 fits — but NOT the reverse. A personal target (对他笑, "smile at him") needs 对; 对于 only frames a topic/attitude (对于这个问题). When in doubt, 对 is the safer, broader one.

    Watch out

    • Don't put a person straight after 对于 as a target — 对于他笑 ✗, 对他笑 ✓.
