A useful situation
- Your goal: Distinguish having done something before from doing it now.
- Before you start, recall the words you already know. New words below are here to help, not a list you must master before continuing.
Words you will use
- experience marker过 guo — experience marker. I / me我to go去experience marker过Shanghai municipality…上海。
- in the process of正在 zhèngzài — in the process of. I / me我in the process of正在study学习。
- last year去年 qùnián — last year. I / me我last year去年to go去experience marker过Shanghai municipality…上海。
- study学习 xuéxí — study. I / me我in the process of正在study学习Chinese language中文。
- before以前 yǐqián — before. I / me我before以前to go去experience marker过。
Match each word with its meaning in this unit.
Use the example sentences to check each word’s meaning in context.
Build the meaning
- Verb + experience marker过 can describe an experience: I / me我to go去experience marker过Shanghai municipality…上海. not / haven't没to go去experience marker过 denies having that experience; it does not deny knowing the city’s name.
- in the process of正在 + verb describes an action in progress: I / me我in the process of正在study学习. A time expression helps identify when a different event happened.
experience marker过 is not an ending to add to every English past-tense verb. Here it presents an experience.
Complete “I have been to Shanghai”: 我去____上海。
过 after 去 marks the experience in this pattern.
Listen for a fresh detail
- Listen before revealing the script.
- Replay if you need to. This is practice: if playback is unavailable, use the script as reading and return to listening on a device with Mandarin playback.
Show the listening script and meaning
I / me我before以前to go去experience marker过Shanghai municipality…上海。now现在I / me我in the process of正在to read看书。
I have been to Shanghai before. Now I am reading.
What is happening now?
现在 and 正在看书 identify the current action.
Read a different account
Wang Li (1900-1986), one of…王力last year去年to go去experience marker过Shanghai municipality…上海。林安not / haven't没to go去experience marker过Shanghai municipality…上海。today今天Wang Li (1900-1986), one of…王力in the process of正在study学习Chinese language中文，林安in the process of正在to read看书。
- The reading and listening have different details. Use the material for the question you are answering.
- Read once for the situation, then again for the relevant detail. Reveal help when needed.
Show the reading meaning
Wang Li has been to Shanghai, last year. Lin An has not. Today Wang Li is studying Chinese and Lin An is reading.
Who has not been to Shanghai?
林安没去过上海 denies her experience.
Speak, write, and review
- Ask whether a partner has been to a city, then ask what they are doing now.
- Record yourself privately or work with a partner. First try without the model, then compare the meaning and structure; a text checker cannot assess your pronunciation.
A: you你to go去experience marker过Shanghai municipality…上海(yes/no ?)吗？ B: not / haven't没to go去experience marker过。 A: you你now现在at / in在to make做what什么？ B: I / me我in the process of正在to read看书。
- Write one experience sentence and one current-action sentence.
- Tomorrow, recall two words and repeat the task with one detail changed. Revisit it after a few days; return sooner to the part that felt difficult.
Distinguish having done something before from doing it now. Use the examples as support, then try a fresh version. Completing these exercises records practice, not a guarantee of mastery.
