A useful situation
- Your goal: Say how you feel and what you would like to do.
- Before you start, recall the words you already know. New words below are here to help, not a list you must master before continuing.
Words you will use
- not不comfortable舒服 bù shūfu — feel unwell. I / me我not不comfortable舒服。
- rest休息 xiūxi — rest. I / me我want / think / miss想rest休息。
- swim游泳 yóuyǒng — swim. I / me我know how to会swim游泳。
- know how to会 huì — know how to. you你know how to会swim游泳(yes/no ?)吗？
- can in the situation能 néng — can in the situation. you你today今天can in the situation能to go去(yes/no ?)吗？
Match each word with its meaning in this unit.
Use the example sentences to check each word’s meaning in context.
Build the meaning
- I / me我not不comfortable舒服 states feeling unwell; I / me我want / think / miss想rest休息 states a wish to rest. A language exercise does not diagnose illness.
- know how to会 asks about a learned skill; can in the situation能 can ask about possibility in the situation. Compare know how to会swim游泳 and today今天can in the situation能swim游泳.
know how to会 and can in the situation能 overlap in some contexts, but a learned skill is different from being able to participate today.
Complete “I want to rest”: 我想____。
休息 names the action wanted.
Listen for a fresh detail
- Listen before revealing the script.
- Replay if you need to. This is practice: if playback is unavailable, use the script as reading and return to listening on a device with Mandarin playback.
Show the listening script and meaning
I / me我know how to会swim游泳，but但是today今天cannot不能to go去。I / me我want / think / miss想rest休息。
I know how to swim, but cannot go today. I want to rest.
What does the speaker want?
我想休息 states the wish directly.
Read a different account
林安know how to会swim游泳，but但是today今天not不comfortable舒服。she / her她today今天不去swim游泳，want / think / miss想to be at home在家rest休息。
- The reading and listening have different details. Use the material for the question you are answering.
- Read once for the situation, then again for the relevant detail. Reveal help when needed.
Show the reading meaning
Lin An knows how to swim, but feels unwell today. She does not go swimming and wants to rest at home.
Does the text say Lin An lacks swimming skill?
林安会游泳 says she has the skill; today’s condition prevents the activity.
Speak, write, and review
- Ask a partner whether they can go today. In a fictional role, say you feel unwell and want to rest.
- Record yourself privately or work with a partner. First try without the model, then compare the meaning and structure; a text checker cannot assess your pronunciation.
A: you你today今天can in the situation能to go去(yes/no ?)吗？ B: I / me我not不comfortable舒服，want / think / miss想rest休息。 A: good好。
- Write two sentences contrasting a skill and today’s possibility.
- Tomorrow, recall two words and repeat the task with one detail changed. Revisit it after a few days; return sooner to the part that felt difficult.
Say how you feel and what you would like to do. Use the examples as support, then try a fresh version. Completing these exercises records practice, not a guarantee of mastery.
